OK I admit I'm being lazy here: I want to buy some nickel wire to run on my DNA 40 devices. What gauge is a good starting point?

Thanks. :)
I'm using 28 AWG for single strand and 30 AWG for twisted builds. I use the twisted 30 for toppers that have smaller build decks and the 28 for those with more room.

The correct answer is: If you have to ask What gauge wire do I need? YOU NEED NONE.

You should not be using ANY resistance type wire. If you haven't taken the effort to learn ohms law or get your hands on one of the 1000000 calculators that do it for you.

Thanks for the sermon but not really the question I asked.

I have been vaping for 1.5 years, and have a background in electronics. My understanding of circuits and Ohm's Law is deeper than probably 95% of the members here. But thanks for the concern.

Getting back to the original question, and since Ohm's Law is not really critical when using nickel on a regulated mod:

When I started building my own coils out of Kanthal I used 32ga to rebuild my Kanger Protank coils. When I got my RDAs I went to 28 and 30 gauge wire. When I started rebuilding my Kanger Subtank RDAs I used 26ga wire. As nickel wire is much lower in resistance, I was just wondering if there was one gauge that could be considered a "general purpose" wire gauge that would suffice for a few different applications, or if I am going to find that different gauges will be needed depending on the device (atty) I am building.

I am sure that this type of information is available by searching but as I admitted, I am being lazy which apparently translates to careless to some folks.

Having a pretty heavy electronic/electrical background and being in the electrical industry for 20+ years I get where you're coming from :toast:

A rough rule of thumb would be to go one or two sizes smaller than what you were using in Kanthal. So if #28 is what you're using in most kanthal builds, you'd probably want #30 nickel.

Personally I just try sticking to #28 and #30 for the most part just because they're the best balance between physical strength and being able to keep coil sizes down to manageable levels. Anything thicker and coils get obnoxiously huge, anything smaller and they're just too flimsy for my tastes.

Another thing worth looking into are twisted kanthal/nickel builds. I'm not familiar enough with them to give any solid advice, I'm just starting with those types of builds, but I think I'll take the time to play with them while I'm on vacation as of tomorrow.

See, this is EXACTLY the kind of information I was looking for. I guess I will start with some 28 and 30 gauge.

Thank you. :thumb:
