Nicotine and depression?

Howdy everyone. I've been vaping for 6 months now and have been quit since Feb. I quit twice before using the patch. Once for a year and once for 8 months. I fell off the wagon both times because I went into a mild depression when I was done the patch. I found that I just felt blah all the time and nothing really made me happy. I read that depression can be a side effect of nicotine withdrawal, but should last for only a few months. I felt that way for the entire time I was off cigs. I instantly felt better once i started smoking again. So this time after I quit again using the patch (couldn't go straight to ecig, failed at that attempt), I picked up my ecig and I haven't felt that depression which is amazing. I don't think I mind vaping forever to help keep me on even keel but was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience? I may want to quit vaping too but not if I get into a crappy state again. Any feedback would be appreciated!

My body tends to do better wth a little nicotine in it. Nicotine won't hurt you unless you have certain medical conditons.

When I quit vaping I will probably wear a low mg. patch or something, maybe SNUS.

I just don't want to be inhaling anything forever, that is the only reason I would give up vaping. I will have to see how I do now that I am at 0mg. 3mg and sometimes 6mg though.

Yup, I suffer from depression anyways, but when I quit smoking several times over the years, it got much worse. Vaping has been the ideal thing to keep me from smoking. No added depression, cuz I'm getting my nicotine, and I have the hand-mouth thing going on, which I certainly didn't get from the patch/Chantix. I'm so happy I started vaping!

My Understanding is that the Nicotine in E-Cig Vapor is better adsorbed by the lining of the mouth and the nasal passages then Lungs. I do a mouth draw,inhale a little into my lungs and exhale out nose. I hold the Vapor in my mouth for a few seconds at first. Also for me 15 draws a hour of 24mg E Liquid would be the same as 60 draws a hour of 6 mg E Liquid- meaning less inhaling

I guess the only way to avoid the depression post quitting would be to keep yourself real busy and quitting completely maybe when there is some positive news coming/ has already come. I guess a bout of depression follows giving up any addiction or even a change of behavior ( at least for a variety of personality types).

find some natural highs, non substance things that get your dopamine dump goin' on (serotonin too, try some hugs, oxytocin the cuddle hormone, helps feelings of well being too) for me it's a cup of coffee (and vape) and some music, (Pop I know..but it gets me dancing in my chair) water, any even a fountain, it's instant peace for me..another reason I live so near the Gulf Coast..fifteen minutes to Nirvana (or and "that" too if you can) :D

if you had depression before that though, as always seek professional help, no shame, it's just like a person with high blood pressure or a diabetic has to take medicine, it's that your brain isn't absorbing/or making enough for you...to not feel depressed.

I'm also one who's dealt with major clinical depression, off and on, for my whole life. For me, even nicotine isn't enough; I've had to add WTA to get me thru my "early days" of quitting, because I have big problems at the 3 wk and 3 mo points of quitting. I'm coming closer to the 3 mo point now, so I'm hoping that after I get *past* 3 mo, I can start decreasing the WTA till I'm back to just nicotine, 10mg-ish, mainly because WTA is a lot more costly than regular ejuice, and it seems to only be available in very high VG proportions, 80%-100% VG, and that plays hell with my lungs, so I have to mix it with some very high-PG juices, which means I don't get very much WTA unless I want to go around feeling like I'm suffocating.

But there is definitely a link between smoking cessation and depression; it's worse for some than others, and for those, it may be one of the major reasons why getting free of cigarettes has been so difficult.

I am being treated for depression and just started vaping about a month ago, and I haven't noticed any increase in my depression since I quit smoking analogs cold turkey. I was a pack and a half a day smoker for 20+ years, and I have only been using a 6 mg nicotine liquid (cause I vape like a madman) and it has worked great. I've also started working out lightly at least once a day and I am sure this helps combat any rise in depression. Good luck and vape on!

The link shows that the article was not found when I went to it, tpriest1030. I read an article several years ago that people with depression, bipolar disorder and even schizophrenia smoke at a higher rate than the general population. The article postulated that the smoking was a form of self-medication, so your experience is not surprising. I have bipolar disorder and have smoked off and on for many years. I don't know if it helps my depression but I'm doing great now that I'm vaping. All the other health benefits of not smoking probably help, too. But ALWAYS see a doctor if you're experiencing any of the symptoms of depression.

Nicotine, like caffeine, is an anti-depressant. To remove it completely shifts your body's balance to be naturally on the more depressed side. Those were my issues with patches and gums. It was like a program, and when it's done, it's done. They're temporary quick fixes. Vaping can be much more long term if you so desire, making the quitting of cigarettes that much more bearable, by slowly weaning your body off nicotine, and by replacing the oral habit of smoking with something else that doesn't dump jet fuel in your lungs like a gas pump.
That's how I see it anyway.
I vaped to quit, and now I vape as a hobby. Cloudchasing doesn't get old...

That link didn't work but found the article with Google. Good read thanks for that. I guess I must be predisposed to depression. I've been a pack a day smoker for more than 20 years and don't really recall being depressed before picking up the habit. Thanks for all your comments. I've taken up running since my lungs can handle it now and I feel great. Think I'll keep on vaping for a while though. Can't say I don't like it :)
