I got a 10ml graduated cylinder. I went to the pool supply store amd got .12 sulfuric acid and total alkalinity test made my own kit

Put 1ml of of what you want to test in the cylinder
Add 2 drops of the total alkalinity solution and yes it is green
add distilled water up to the three ml mark
add the sulfuric acid drop wise shaking it until it turns red
get out your calculator in subtract 3 from the number of milliliters you have
multiply by 19.4712
This will give you the mg/ml
Everywhere I've seen uses the blue indicator. I couldn't find it so I've been using the green total alkalinity testing solutions
So far everything I've tested of known nic has been so close as no not make a difference if it is off.

right on thanks! i use to work at a pool company testing water samples. sounds easy enough. just need a graduated cylinder. could you use a syringe? would the solution be over 5 ml? just cap on end of the syringe and go to town...

I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a syringe. I just tested some juice its total volume came to 4.5ml that calculates to 29.somethingmg/ml
See I don't really care too much about accuracy as long as I can tell its 29mg/ml and not 39 or 69mg/ml I'm ok with that.
I found a chart that had the ph change number for a bunch of indicators looked like there was a lot of overlap as to where the color changed. I don't think it could be that far different from bromothymol blue as to make a difference to me.
In fact I use my thumb over the top of my cylinder and shake it up cause I want to do a 3minute test. Thats a loss that changes the result. For every 5ml of acid you use it adds around 10mg/ml. I have a hard time reading the difference between .3ml and .4ml on the cylinder and that's ok with me.
