Lack of Potassium and dehydration can cause cramps. Try adding bananas to your diet and/or drink power drinks such as gatoraid or poweraid.

No, those drinks are all very high in sodium, and not very high in potassium; they don't help at all.

Just check out the diff.. the top 2 are Powerade... the bottom two are chocolate and plain coconut water:

ETA: the Powerade also supplies over twice as much sugar.

Also.. eating bananas, and other fruit *is* a good way to *prevent* the cramping problems... but when you've already got those painful cramps, you want 'em gone FAST, so you want it LIQUID -- when my husband once got a very painful full-leg cramp, he came limping into the kitchen, asking me what he could do... I poured him a tall glass of coconut water, he chugged it.. and by the time he set the glass down, the cramp was GONE.

well I KNOW that I am extremely dehydrated... I have a lot of related health issues and dehydrating is a result and side-effect of my health issues. But, i have a hard time drinking water because I just cant get low-weight-liquids down. I need liquid with substance. I need liquid with a thickness or a heaviness. It's almost impossible for me to drink plain water without gagging. hand me a glass of H20 with some lemon and sugar in it, I'll chug it. milk? Love it. water with sugar, sure! water with MIO flavoring, yup! koolaid, yesssir! water with mashed red&black berries, yessuma'am... but i just CANT drink straight water. I'll have-to checkout the coconut water thing. problem-is, i also have a disease that prevents my body from expelling cholesterol through my urine, which winds-up giving the men in my family heart disease and heart issues in their middle years, sadly. Soooo, coconut water is actually BAD for me in that respect. Unless there is low-fat/low-cholesterol coconut water? lol. oh boy do i have issues, haha.

Once every couple weeks I have this experience. I wake up in the middle of the night and take a vape. The flavor is exceptional and the vapor feels just perfect. I feel like immediately taking another draw then another then another. Each draw is simply perfect. It may go on for 10 minutes. I have to force myself to put it down and go back to sleep. I'm wondering if anyone else has this experience and if they can explain it. Thanks.
Did you ever wake up and smoke back whenever? I used to wake up sometimes and smoke one or two cigs, then go back to sleep. Funny thing with vaping is, when my head hits the pillow, I'm down till morning rolls around. I do vape right up until bedtime though.

Well, the plain coconut water has zero fat, so zero cholesterol. The chocolate coconut water has 1 gram of fat -- I have to eat a low fat, very low cholesterol diet because of gallstones, but coconut water, even the chocolate, gives me no issues.

If you drink the plain kind, you may want to mix it 50/50 with pineapple juice; my husband says the taste is ok, but I find it kinda icky; it's got a bit of that "salty" kind of taste like the sports drinks have, just because it has so much potassium; the juice covers it, and the taste of the coconut water is so light, all you really taste is the juice. (ETA: I'm not really one to drink a lot of water either -- if I'm taking pill(s), then sure, cold water is the best, but any other time, 2-3 swallows is about all I can handle, and it MUST be refrigerated; room-temp water nearly always gags me, unless I'm completely PARCHED.)

I think I am the opposite in 1 respect- I actually can't get down cold water sometimes... I sometimes try my best to get the faucet to room-temp before I pour a glass... Idk why... seems to make it weightier? IDK! But I definitely do sometimes make sure I'm pouring some luke warm tap before I have a glass.... If I absolutely must drink tap water, I usually make sure it isn't too cold. COLD + Weightless = disgusting. I'll drink freezing cold water too, like a water-bottle from the garage in winter months, or a bottle from the fridge i guess. In-fact, I've been doing that more and more lately... But sometimes I'm just NOT in the mood for feeling that weightless water making my insides feel cold as I slug it back like a big 8oz glass of freezing cold wet flavorless weightless nothingness. Cold tap can taste even worse than warm tap, too... Blechh!! I can't take that, sometimes. Blech!!! Adding coconut water TO some tap-water or waterbottle water sounds like it may help with the weight/flavor? I may need to give that a shot, as I'm just not "Always" in the mood for acidic lemon juice in my Aqua. BLEH! lol. Hmmmm I had no clue that coconuts contained so much potassium. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to avoid "too much" potassium for 1 of my ailments as-well.... Causes a bad reaction. Hmm.

But alright, thanks for the tips Andria. I may have-to give this CCNWatah a go. :) Thanks again!

I doubt I could drink an 8oz glass of water if my life depended on it. :D I do take a couple swigs from my refrigerated water bottle from time to time, but it's not like regular or anything -- if I happen to notice I'm thirsty, I'll have a couple swallows of water before getting some other beverage; I tend to operate on the idea that any liquid that doesn't contain alcohol, caffeine, or too much sugar, is good to drink.

I made an inquiry with my pharmacy once about the potassium, because I was taking an antibiotic that had some kind of issue with potassium; their response was that generally *dietary* potassium won't cause any problems, but you may want to run it by your doc, especially if you're taking potassium supplements for your cardiovascular issues.

Hmm, interesting. I used to wake up in the middle of the night or really, really early (for me) and I'd want to have a smoke. That hasn't happened since I started vaping. Coincidence??

I can't do my "normal" vape when I first wake up: too much to handle. I tootle my menthol vape with the first cup of coffee, and maybe the second cup too.

One of the reason's I'm overweight is because of a similar phenomenon. I often wake up hungry. And I'll wander down to the kitchen and get a snack, and everything tastes amazing!. Doesn't work with the vape though. Just tastes like garbage.

I can't seem to gain weight even when I try... But i ONLY eat at night. I usually have coffee for breakfast, I eat nothing for lunch OR dinner, and then right before bed I'll usually have a pizza, or a bowl or two of cereal, or 2 bowls of cream farina w/ maple syrup, an apple with cheese, pepperoni, & e, or I'll have whatever my momma had for dinner that night or the night before (she makes enough for me and I usually eat it the NEXT night or within the next few days, b4 bed) Idk, I'm just the type that dislikes feeling full throughout the day and night. I'll eat RIGHT before i go to sleep so i dont hav2 deal w/it lol. Actually, in middleschool, I was caught perpetrating bulimic behavior by my family. I hadn't even known "bulimia" was a thing prior to being caught after a spaghetti dinner at my sister's house. i was doing it because I wanted to be-able to eat with my family & enjoy the taste & the meal, but i didn't want to feel full. It had nothing to do with weight loss. I've always been fit/athletic or skinny. It was a very rare occurrence, a huge italian dinner, for instance. so that tells you how much I hate, HATE, feeling full. It also tells you i'm either very creative & willing to take risks, or psychotic... well, most geniuses are both. :D Anyways- Some nights I'll eat nothing but a PB&J sandwich, & some nights I'll eat the last two plates of dinner my mom has placed in the fridge for me. lol.

Actually, 1 of my all-time FAVORITE attributes & side-effects of smoking was the fact that I could eat something & then smoke a cigarette or two and my stomach would FEEL empty once again- & #2, if i smoked a cig or two, my hunger would completely disappear, so i wouldn't want to eat lunch anymore. I find that vaping just doesn't do the 1st effect as efficiently as smoking did. Yes, vaping will definitely decrease my hunger, but it DOESN'T decrease my stomach bulge "feelings" after having already ate.

& I'll also often wake-up in the middle of the night hungry as-well. I'll head to the kitchen, fashion a hard salami and hard cheddar cheese with banana pepper and lettuce mayo garlic/onion & olive-oil/vinegar & salt+pepp grinder and woof that thing DOWN in my SLEEP! lol. my mom tells me that's because ALL she ate when she was prego for me was real hard aged salami grinders. :p the $$ stuff. said she loved pickles but not ice-cream, not dairy. Plus, she smoked with all 4 of us. Can't complain, I came-out pretty damn smart ;) fueling the philosophical conundrums I run-into regularly... dammit ma! ;) Over-all I have no issues with eating at night... Though I do hear it's bad for the digestive tract. I'll have-to deal with that as I get a bit older I s'pose, eh? Don't want to have-to hibernate like a bear. Imagine passing that last supper in April. lol. No thanks....

But yeah vaping @ night right-after waking-up is a no-go for me due-to dehydration issues. If I do have a drink nearby then I absolutely take a vape after taking a few sips, abso-freakin'-lutely! U bet!! 4sho! But w/out the side-table drink I'm doomed & I have-to wait til morning to enjoy it. (I do TRY, but I'm usually kicked in the throat after the 1st hit, never mind a 2nd)

& as-for potassium, it isn't for heart issues alone... potassium creates issues for my body I'd rather not discuss, and I'm NOT talking about constipation (which it ALSO causes for me, haha) no, it causes issues too scary for me to discuss & I often believe that the more people whom know of your health issues, the more those health issues can exasperate. The whole "if a group of 2000 people focus on one spot of one tree, & attempt to light that spot on fire, the leaves will begin to smoke & smolder" Yeah, I know that this is mystic BS, but I dislike sharing my personal health issues for that reason. :/ meh. Potassium isn't great for me, though. Both for constipation & for other reasons, unfortunately.

I find that ALWAYS having a bottle of MIO drink enhancer around (or an off-brand) reallly helps me to drink more fluids. I can carry it in my pocket & whenever I remember, I pour a glass of water & squirt a bit of MIO in there and mix it up and chug. I honestly don't even squirt enough to taste the flavor half of the time. JUST-enough to change the "weight" of the water, and I am OK with drinking it. So, I do that, and it has really helped me to drink more. It's just hard to remember to grab that MIO.... I have recently been moving to powdered-drink-canisters because you get more flavoring in those.... & even still, I just dump a teaspoon in an 8oz glass of water and I'm OK to drink it because it's heavier!! haha. So, I can make a canister of store-brand koolaid mix last me months & months when I'm only using it to change the weight of the water. haha. It's really that simple for me, I CANT drink THIN water! It's just DISGUSTING to me, my tongue, & my throat & esophagus. GROSS! Thin water! Thin SOLVENT! (water is known in the scientific community as the universal solvent, for all of you whom never enjoyed science class, haha) they call it that, because it IS essentially the UNIVERSAL solvent. Other solvents being- Naphtha, Butane, Alcohol, Mineral Spirits... ALL of these substances are solvents. Water is the same exact thing. In-fact, if aliens were to land on earth, they MAY corrode, due to the H2o content of our atmosphere. Water is very corrosive, and it oxidizes most substances that come into contact w/it. If aliens made-up of organic compounds much different from our own, came to earth, the water in our air and on our ground, could very well melt them like a cookie sitting in a milk puddle. :D lol. something to think about.... Water is also used in the pharmaceutical industry for extraction processes, just-like naptha/alcohol/ether/mineral-spirits/etc... so, next-time you give your kid a bath, remember, don't leave him/her in there too long... Our bodies may be designed to be made-up of a % of H2o, but when exposed to quantities large-enough to be considered a liquid, rather-than vapor, water can be a very corrosive/oxidizing substance, similar to formic or acetic acids! be careful with your baby boy or girl!!!

lolz :)

Guilty as charged! I always kept my pipe rack on the bedside cabinet on my side of the bed and made sure I had a loaded pipe in the ashtray, "just in case", before I went to sleep.

Now surprise surprise the pipe rack has been replaced with the Vaping Rack and everything is loaded before I go to sleep.

Unless it's for a bathroom visit I don't always wake up during the night...but if I do I always enjoy going through to the living room and having a vape - sometimes with a cup of strong tea.

Can be one of the best vaping experiences for me actually...

A long time ago I used to smoke in bed. Woke up frequently during the night and smoked one. Smoked outdoors for the last five years or so that I was smoking, for various family related reasons. Most non-smokers do find the smell extremely unpleasant and I stopped feeling OK imposing it on other people. I still used to wake up sometimes and go outside for a smoke. During that time I also used cigalikes. They weren't as satisfying as real cigs but they didn't require a trip outside.

I do keep a vape on the nightstand, generally a mini PT on low power. I vape for a while and watch TV before I go to sleep, which is my favorite vape of the day. I used to wake up quite often and grab the vape. That's happening less and less but I still wake up occasionally and take a hit. It helps with getting back to sleep.

It isn't my best vape though. Seems to be harsh on my throat for some reason. I'm envious of how it works for you.

I do agree with you Andrea , but humbly disagree with you when you say they don't "help at all".

The sodium helps you hold the fluid to prevent dehydration.

You get more mEq eating a banana and washing it down with a power drink...and it taste better imo.

Most people get plenty or even too much sodium, from the modern diet -- so many processed foods, cured meats, etc -- so adding more sodium, for most people, isn't an answer; adding more potassium will help to balance the surplus of sodium, and for more-mature women, adding calcium is another excellent idea, because calcium is an electrolyte that your body will leach from your bones, to have enough for the body's metabolism. Sports drinks don't have ANY calcium.

I can only go on my own experience; the reason I had those bottles of PowerAde handy to photograph is because I've tried pretty much everything, and sports drinks simply do not work -- I've got plenty of sodium, what I need is more potassium, and that is true of most people who experience night leg/foot craps, if they're not pro athletes or in training for the Olympics.
