Being designed industrially and being designed for industry are different concepts.

Some flashlights are advertised as being suitable for 18650 Li-ion or 3xAAA. The round 3xAAA battery holders have a slightly larger diameter than the 18650 battery.

The diameter of 18650 mods varies a bit. I recall discussions talking about some mods being wide enough for a kick, and some not wide enough.
If the widest dimension of the 3xAAA battery holder involves the plastic holder itself and not the batteries, perhaps it could be whittled down to size.
