Hi all,
hope you can help.
I am really really new at this and admit to knowing very little.

I have been vaping since 24th April and haven't had a ciggie since then, but I find that all the juices and cartridges have very little taste. Now i read all the stuff on the forum and figured it was just my dead taste buds from 30 odd years of smoking, so i just persevered.

but its been 9 weeks now. I have some dekang and hangsen 80%PG/20%VG juices, with a mix of 12mg to 24mg of nic, which i can barely taste at all, i have tried cartridges and clearomizers, dont have any tanks or atomizers yet, have to wait for next pay day to order some, i cant go to a B&M as none in my state. I am using a KR808-01 and a 510 set up.

i ordered some VG liquid as i think i was having a slight reaction to the PG and some ecig flavours to match the eliquid i already have. I used an eliquid calculator to get 60PG/40VG and about 12mg of nic but i added extra 20% flavour to match the premade liquid. mixed up 5ml of 2 different flavours but they are still virtually tasteless.

is it supposed to steep? or have i done something wrong?

thanks for any help,
Gremlin

You did not mention what flavor. Tobacco Flavors need 4 weeks if they are from TFA.
Also keep in mind. PG does a really crappy job at carrying flavors. PG is able to absorb and work with flavors much better.
I have had little or no luck getting any taste till I started to use PG.

If you got your Dekang from fasttech. yes most times you cant tell what the flavor is even supposed to be.
The worst Ive had with little or no flavor are apple, Strawberry, Juicy Peach. Their Fruit punch was the only flavor I got some taste.

Some palates just prefer strong flavors. They told me the same thing. Dead taste buds but its been 4 months. No change. I just like it strong.

Drink hot tea or Coffee. It helps clean the tongue. Use a good tongue cleaner. When you brush your teeth. Else the comple tongue and mouth is just coated in PG and no flavor gets thru. Try hot water salt gargling it also helps. Bring the flavors up.

It will take a while for you buds to regenerate. However, you should at least be able to taste something. I've never been a fan of Dekang so maybe a new brand of e-juice is in order.

Dripping produced the best flavor in my opinion so you might try upgrading to a mechanical mod and RBA with a drip tip with your next paycheck. From what I have seen on this forum there is plenty of information on the various mech mods and their clones so just use that search function.

Your nicotine level, especially at 24mg, is pretty high and the more nicotine the worse the flavor. It's easy to taper nicotine levels on these things because they are do easy to use everywhere.

Good luck!

There's a period after quitting smoking where you still haven't recovered from taste buds being dead. Tobacco paralyzes Cilia in your bronchial tubes, deadens your taste buds, and kills your sense of smell. All of that in working order is necessary for you to appreciate the flavors of vaping.

It may take months before you will be able to walk outside and smell the aromas of the world. That will happen one day and you will smell things you haven't experienced since before you started smoking. Pine trees, flowers, and all the smells will return in time (along with some you don't like). I can load the coffee maker with coffee and water for a timer start in the morning and after that, every time I walk near the kitchen I can smell the dry coffee from 10 or 15 feet away. I couldn't do that for 40 years while smoking.

Sense of smell is most of taste. Your taste buds can only sense sweet, sour, bitter, and umami (associated with tastes in meat). The rest of it is being able to detect aromas and odors.

For the time being, find some juices with flavors you can detect. Mints, menthol, fruits, and other strongly flavored juices will work fine. Some vendors offer double shots of flavor for an extra buck or two per bottle. It might be worth your time to find those vendors.

Here's a thread that names juice vendors who do extra shots of flavor on request when you order.

thank you so much everyone!! some pretty good advise in there, and i do intend to work my up to a better set up, just not confident that I understand all the mod bibs and bobs, its looks a bit complicated just yet.

i am only vaping about 12mg of nic at the moment once i add in the extra VG and double flavours, but will let it sit more than a minute to see if the flavours develop further.

I have more juice on the way from Smoke Rainbow, about 30 different flavours from 10 different vendors and will be here one day soon I hope :)

thanks again! :)

never been a fan of Dekang so maybe a new brand of e-juice is in order.

Same here as Dekang (popular with many smoke shops) almost made me quit vaping before I even started. If I had not found a certain juice being sold via some local Totally Wicked resellers (did not like TW juice either) I would not be doing DIY today for sure. Lucky I found this little known vendor who is actually pretty big since many local vape shops carry his juice. I would spend hours shooting the **, trying various flavors, trying different hardware and even got the chance to try his Provari which I knew nothing about back then.

Some of the Dekang flavors to me taste like fruit mixed with roach spray they were so bad. The Peach and Mango were the only ones I could tolerate. The RY4 was just plain nasty and it was not until people raved about RY4D on here that I even attempted to try that flavor again. DIY has been a huge game changer as I flat out hated Dekang Strawberry. But TFA Strawberry (CAP makes me cough) I just about vape every day of the week in different mixes.

As for the juice you modified 20% flavoring is probably way to much for one flavor. I suggest starting with 3% (approx. 6 drops per 10ml) and working up from there 2 drops (or 1%) at a time. Most flavors go totally flat around 10-15% so you probably want to be around 5-8% at the most.

Here's what's gonna help your senses. Take zinc supplements 50mg tablets for about 10 days. The reason you're not tasting anything is because your olfactory senses have gone to sleep. Zinc helps speed up the olfactory healing sensors. Also try vaping menthol for a bit. And definitely stop using dekang flavors. They suck.

Your sense of taste and sense of smell work nearly hand-in-hand with each other and it'll take some time for your body to repair itself from the damage done by smoking. There's plenty of recommendations for a quick fix, though time is honestly the best cure. Vitamins, Sports Drinks, Spicy Food, etc - they can help to an extent, though time is what fixes the issue for most.

I smoked for ten years and it took me around 8-9 months before I was able to fully taste what I was vaping. I went through the stages of using 15-30% flavoring because I too couldn't taste much of anything, regardless of where my e-liquid came from. Once things were back to normal, those percentages were cut in half at minimum, though I often go with less flavoring these days.

I remember when I first began to taste food normally once again. I was eating a frozen custard dessert and normally, I love custard, especially frozen custard and most gelatos, though the salt began pulling through tremendously and I had to stop eating it. When I smoked, there was never "too much" salt on my food. Now that I can taste, a pinch here and there is way more than enough. Spicy food used to never phase me at all. I'd eat habanero's, ghost pepper sauces, raw jalapeno's etc - now I have to be a little more careful as my taste buds know what I'm eating and sometimes scream :).

Time, of course, will vary from one individual to another. Even though you smoked longer than I did, you may find that you're able to taste everything much quicker. You could, of course, take the slower route and even with higher amounts of flavoring, not taste anything (or very little) for a longer period of time.

I was a pack a day, two packs on the weekend type smoker. Mostly Camel Lights, though occasionally I smoked Marb's when the gas station was out of Camels (popular brand here in East TN apparently - or the gas stations just never ordered).

Just keep in mind Menthol will help you taste it's kinda like adding salt to foods. But Menthol and Cinnamon also kill taste buds so while it may help you initially you will want to back off after a month or so. If you continue to vape it for a prolonged period of time you wont be doing yourself any favors.
