There's a yarn shop about a mile from home and the lady gives knitting lessons 2 days a week. When I started a couple of years ago I wasn't even sure how to hold the needles, but I'm making a sweater now. See if there's something like that around for you to go to--or a friend to help you. Using different types of yarn on the same pattern can make a different looking scarf, too. If you can do the 2 basic stitches, you can make lots of different things by combining them in different ways. I haven't tried a blanket yet, so you're ahead of me there
