Bring on the questions, I can use some more. ;)

I'm one of those that collect useless bits of info too. I don't think there's many things I can do *well* but there are lots of things that I can do. I collect hobbies the same way I do useless info. LOL

Too bad I seem to be having that file clerk issue. And funny enough, it's only happened since I had kids. My file clerk must be taking too many coffee breaks or something- the drawers are in total chaos.

ahh. My grandma is still alive, but I haven't seen her in years, we live on opposite sides of the country(and i really miss living near my family!). My grandma is 1/2 italian, 1/2 portuguese. I've never been over there personally, I'm just going to guess that since the countries are so close, there are probably a lot of similar features- so that probably explains it. ;)

Why do cats rub up against you? It's not just when they are hungry!

Why do Doctor's offices make you fill out the same paperwork over and over? I mean in the same visit or if you are having a test. I just did a bone scan (i'm good, no osteo) And I filled out 6 pages! Why? It's the same place I go for all my ests!

I read a book many moons ago about a man who worked in space, because on Earth he couldn't walk..In space he could. Is that true? Or rather would it be true?

In another book people grew giant food because of the low gravity..would that work?

When we are small, we grow up liking the foods we were given, If we move to another country we have a hard time getting used to the new foods. Are we hardwired for taste?

Why can't you move your toes independantly as you can your fingers? Ring fingers are hard..but it can be done.

Well, I can't answer them all, but I can give you a few:

Ok, here goes'
Why do cats rub up against you? It's not just when they are hungry!
Because they're evil.

What is a maid of honor?
A poor schmuck forced to incessantly purchase ugly dresses and pretend to be happy that yet another of her friends has bitten the dust....oh, sorry, strike that, TMI. This is closely followed by "Baby shower planner-of-honor" and "My divorce is final best buddy-of-honor".

Why do hurricanes blow one way and cyclones another?
They don't. Cyclones can occur anywhere an air mass is circulating. Tropical air mass rotations are called hurricanes if the wind speed gets high enough. This name usually applies in the Atlantic region. In the Pacific, they're usually called typhoons. In the northern hemisphere, they circulate counter clockwise. In the southern hemisphere, it's clockwise. This is due to the circulation of the earth and a bunch of other things too boring (to most people) to mention here.

Can Big cats mate each other..lion, tigers, lepards ect?
Some can. Lion/tiger cubs are called ligers, I believe.

Did Chihuahua's decend from dogs or foxes?
Animal Planet says the jury's still out on this one. Apparently, some zoologists are doing dna research to try to find an answer.

Why would math be a universal language if meeting Aliens (from outer space) Why wouldn't art or muisic? I can't do math well..does that mean I can't make myself understood..even if I do the Vulcan hand sign?
The laws of physics are universal. No matter what your plane of reference, the equations required to get from Planet A to Planet B are the same. (This is not considering Einstein's relativity theorem, which is a whole 'nuther ball of wax!). Only the symbology used to express those laws may differ. Art and music can be interpreted according to societal norms, and differ even across earth-bound groups. Although I thought the application of music as math as depicted in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" to be elegant. And, of course, the Vulcan hand sign is a universal signal. Well, it should be.....

I read a book many moons ago about a man who worked in space, because on Earth he couldn't walk..In space he could. Is that true? Or rather would it be true?
Many moons ago....good one! Depends on why he couldn't walk. In space he is essentially weightless, so if it was a muscular problem, this might be true. However, if he had a spinal injury, I don't think his body weight would matter.

When we are small, we grow up liking the foods we were given, If we move to another country we have a hard time getting used to the new foods. Are we hardwired for taste?
Yes. All animals learn what's safe to eat from their parents. The foods you learn to like as a child are pretty much hard-wired into your brain. Of course, you can acquire tastes for other foods as you mature. Otherwise, how do you explain Brussels sprouts and raw oysters?

Why do toe nails grow so slow compared to finger nails?
Your nail growth is (partially) influenced by the anount of use they get. Since you use your hands more, those nails grow faster. Actually, the nails on your dominant hand grow faster than the ones on the other hand. However, since you use that hand more, you tend to wear the nails down faster, so you usually don't notice it.

Why do some people remember the written word..like a book or this board (me) but not remember the spoken word as well (like a tape or a song)?
Humans are visually-dominant. Unlike other mammals, our other senses are pretty crappy in comparison. We tend to retain what we see much better than we we get from the other senses.

Wow, aren't I smug know-it-all? :D

Good answers..:pGlad you got the many moons pun!
I did get cyclones mixed up with Typhoons! I have a friend in Au and she's always talking about them. She has family in the north that get them a lot..north? The top of Au!
As I recall from the book, the guy "Waldo" had to use waldo type arms to move objects that were heavy (in space!)I think that's where the tern "Waldo" came from..meaning robotic arms. He has a muscle disorder caused by prolonged weighlessness. He was also a large man so that made it even worse for him on Earth..could have been a Heinlein book.
I used to read a lot of 1940's and 50's scifi.
At least I was right about the Vulcan hand signal! Did anyone see Race to Witch Mountain? At the very end they should have done the Vulcan hand sign! It would have made my day!8-o
By the way I watched it with kids..yeah that's it! It wasn't because the Rock was in it....no! besides The original Tia and Tony were in it! (as the waitress Tina and Sheriff Anthony. The kids and I loved those movies..back when. I used to tell them that they HAD to go with me to Disney movies because they wouldn't let me in without kids. Gotta love gullible kids!

I have one more question.
Why do we spell the way we do? Schumck should be spelled smuck..do we really need the German guteral sounds? Or is that Polish Yiddish?

Why isn't stomach stomick? I got in trouble for that one in school!
Same with Salmon..my teacher insisted on pronouncing SaL-mon. Why isn't it samon?
I hate spelling it makes NO nada zip sense to me. math even makes more sense and that's crazy making.

Yeah, the Rock is easy on the eyes, ain't he?

I believe schmuck is old German (Yiddish), but I couldn't say for sure. Maybe there's a Jewish member on the forum who can help us on this one. I do know that English is a hodge-podge of old English, old German, and Latin, among others. It's a wonder any of us can spell at all!

I'm up late since I'm working the shuttle launch this week, which means I'm working about 5 pm to 2 am. I sure wish we could get this bird launched! I'm usually in bed by 10:30 and up at 4:30 am, so this shift is kicking my .... Right now, I'm wide awake, madly vaping JC chocolate truffle and drinking red wine (a good combination, by the way), and I'm not ready for bed yet. Oh, well.

BTW - TruTV has Forensics Files on right now - who knew? Love that show.

I stand outside and watch every single launch! I am amazed every time. My FIL used to send us pictures while they were making the 1st shuttle in Ca. I got to see one pretty close when they landed one piggyback in Tampa. I had a friend get us near..well as near as those big guys with guns would let us! I truly thought when I was a kid, by now rides into space would be like a plane ride..open to anyone with a ticket!

Of course I am still waiting for robot maids (I robot..the original book) and food processers that zip out fully cooked meals ala Star Trek! My jet pack seems to be lost in the mail. (Buck Rogers) Oh I wish they would hurry up!
My light blue hovercraft would also be nice..I will trade in one truck and one SUV for it! Isn't that what the cash for clunkers was for? I wonder if the hover craft has any trunk space and comes with cupholders? I'll need a cigarette lighter for my passthru..a cd player and....

I also want one of those trade in your old body machines! (Twilight Zone) I would like to be a 6' blond this time around! I will give up my E.T. figure with it's low to the ground center of gravity for legs that go on for a mile!

Hi Ms vapin! How ya been? That little lost lamb best sit down before I decide to have lamb stew! My brain goes like this all the time, I cannot tell you how many times I wake up in the middle..or in my case tail end of the night with some crazy plan or project! I am happy with that because the other side of the coin is a nightmare..if it stars hubby, I am mad at him for days!

Once in a while my brain goes all loggy and I can't think at all, I know my meds are messed up. (I take them for B.P. and diabetes..oh yeah my estrogen.) When that happens I sleep all day. It's like a vacation before overdrive kicks in!

I meant to add, I don't have manic depressive disorder or any other disorder. My mom took me to specialists..I am just made this way! One Dr. said it's like I have a souped up brain..but without genius! Oh well..me and my mediocre brain are headed to bed. Night all!

Me, too!

I remember when the Apollo program ended and the shuttle program started up. I also thought we'd be zipping to the moon base and back by now.

Come to think of it, where's my Rosie the maid (Jetsons)? Or, as you said, my food replicator (Star Trek)? Looks like I'll die of old age before I see either of those.

As a space geek, I've always dreamed of that elusive "first encounter" in my lifetime, but I don't think we're ready yet. We would behave like our usual idiot human selves and scare off any species brave enough to pay us a visit. How sad the human race is sometimes............:(

We would shoot any ET's..and cover it up at area 51! ( those little guys are probably in area 57 by now!) I believe we have been visited..surely God didn't give up after us! besides how else do you explain men and armadillo's?
Rocket, did you give any more thought to growing big stuff like veggies or sheep on a planet with low gravity?
