I got a cheap DID clone for my first rba. I got it on a lark when I was ordering a KDS K-MAX from VaporBreak (Great mod BTW), but I've had all kinds of trouble setting up the rba. I suspect the wire that came with it does not provide enough resistance. On the meter, it takes about four inches of wire to get up to 2 Ohms. That much wire wraps the wick in an almost solid coil.

So far: I wrapped about half a sheet of the wick screen around a spindle, then wrapped wire from the closest post around the wick while it was still on the spindle, and clamped the tag end to the center post.

When I fire it for very short burst, it glows between the center post to the wick, and maybe one coil down at best, but then pops right where the wire hits the wick.

The RBA has two allen-head screws, and I know one is for grounding the coil wire at the base where it comes of the wick, and I'm assuming the other one is for filling the tank. Also, I've been dousing the wick with VG because I saw done in a youtube video somewhere.

Ok, I tried another build with only 4-5 wraps. Not stellar, but better. I didn't put any VG on, and just kept pusling it on a spinner. A little more each time until the whole coil was glowing. I thought I had it licked, but when I put some e-juice on it, it tasted like grim blistering death.

I started asking myself why I was going through all this and, other than the fact I like to screw around with stuff, I couldn't give an answer.

Is it really just this hard, or am I making it that way?

I remember my go around with the DID clone when they first hit the sites for sale. They are the hardest to get set up,cut the wick 1-2mm shorter so it can not hit the bottom of the tank.Remove the bottom screw off the positive post. When you wrap the coil pull it as close to the post as possible without it touching, there is too much of a distance between the coil and the post that will cut back on the coil popping when pulsing or firing it up.The DID's and clones are all metal tanks so remember to oxodize the coil.

It's not that nobody wanted to chime in on this one because you were doing anything wrong,it's because the DID's are an absolute B#$@# to set up.

Yeah, that DID clone was my first BRA as well. After I mastered the build, I really started to appreciate vape gear made by modders, people who actually vape. That build is a royal pain in the azz..

I can't recommend a target resistance for your coil as I don't know what batteries you're working with but you might try a micro coil. Build the coil on a drill but, install it, pulse it, slide a oxidized wick in and pulse it again.

You might try so 28GA kanthal as well, seems to be alot more robust that 30 and 32.

Buy my AC9 :)

I have chobras, which are similar, but plastic tanks. The insertion of an m2 washer between the top two positive nuts helped reduce the distance so you don't have to push the coil against the wick hole, or risk hitting the tank with the bottom. That said, mine all have micro coils and cotton in them now, I just don't have time to f around with mesh or cable, which always seemed to go wrong at the worst time.

this usually happens from pulsing and burning the wick surface. if the coil is glowing roperly you will have to fill it up and the bad flavor will wear off in a Ml or 2. i can help with the exact clone but the washer trick seems to help many with the hot leg issue.

once you start pulsing you cant just hold the button or as you find out it hits a shorted spot and pops. im not really sure its wise pulsing on an ego.

i know many of the clones are not worth the trouble and I suggest maybe giving an rsst a try, it seems to be a very beginner friendly that works well.

My first genesis was a did clone. I got it working just well enough to get a taste of what a genesis can do and then I bought the real thing. The problem with the clone (or the ones I have) is the silicon insulators are very flimsy and it's almost impossible to keep them from shredding and hard shorting the device. I know that many clones are just as good as the original (RSST) but the did clone isn't one of them. Maybe they've improved them lately but the ones I have aren't worth messing with. When it works, it's pretty awesome but it's hard to keep it working for any length of time.
