Have just invested in a smoktek dct tank. Thé vender recommended the smoktek cartos to go with it; but trying a new juice I changed the carto.
Now it heats intermitently. (Or takes a few seconds to get going)
Is this something i have done wrong or just the carto????

It might be the battery and carto battery end needs cleaning
or
the center post on the carto has been pushed up and is not fully connecting with the battery.

Vapoor eyes er gave you a good suggestion.

What battery device are you using? An eGo or a mod? What is the ohm rating or resistance of the cartomizer in question?

I'll give you another recommendation. PBusardo is a well known and popular e-cig reviewer who did the above video. He also just released an excellent, if rather long, tutorial on cartotanks. I recommend viewing it:

Sorry. It's a 1.5 ohm carto running on a sigelei zmax at 4.2 watts

Is it dual coil or single coil?

That's probably too hot a voltage for a low resistance single coil cartomizer. The safe vaping power chart is a useful guideline you can use to judge what ohms delivery device to use and at what voltage range. 1.5 ohm should only use a voltage range of up to 3.5 volts. Your Z-max is possibly powering off for your protection.
