Noob trouble.

Hi all. After using 2 piece ecigs for about a month and having lurked here, and watched many hours of YouTube videos I jumped right in and bought an Itaste MVP last week. I ordered a couple pro tanks, both of which had substantial metal shavings in the tube, which I cleaned out with cotton swabs. So, I filled a new pro tank with a clearish liquid last night. I vaped until it was about half empty at around 4 volts, which is within the recommended range stated in the guide that came with the pro tank. Before refilling, the liquid in the tank was clear, after refilling and screwing the bottom piece back on, the liquid turned a Carmel color, and every puff I take now has a distinct burned taste. Have I done something wrong? What can I do to prevent this in the future? Does the scorched liquid pose a health threat? Thank you for your help.

Hi and welcome to ECF.

No health threat. Your head (wick+ coil) needs to be washed and dry burned. It's part of the maintenance of clearos. Washing cleans the wicks and dry burning removes the juice gunk on the coil which is causing your juice to turn brown and taste horrid. Vid below although not the ProTank it's basically the same with all clearo heads.
Take the tank apart and wash everything. In the vid below at 6:24 mins it shows how to dry burn. Disregard the rest of the vid. Wash the head after dry burning.

I don't think it is a hazzard. We scorch the liquid pretty good when we vape it. I have had a similar problem with an evod (same basic thing as a Pro Tank, only smaller). There seems to be a small portion of liquid that stays at the bottom and doesn't get absorbed by the wick. This liquid sits and gets hot everytime you vape and turns dark. When you flip the tank upside down to fill it, this dark liquid goes to the top and mixes with all the new liquid you put in the tank. I think this is what puts a burned taste in the tank after a refill. I have started rinsing this liquid out before I refill. Seems to help but wastes some liquid. Hope that helps.

the metal shavings don't sound good, so it's good you cleaned that out. I'm not sure about the burnt taste you're getting but
juice does tend to get darker as you vape especially in tanks that hold a lot of liquid. At least that's been my experience, but I don't believe it to pose a health threat. I've read on this forum that it's pretty normal for e liquid to turn darker. Also, if you are referring to the Kanger Pro Tanks, I have one and after you fill it, take like 10 or so dry puffs to prime your atty before sending a charge to it. It worked for me so try that and see what happens, 'cause once you get that burnt taste, you won't get rid of it.

Thank you all for the quick feedback! It was a new tank last night, I was refilling for the first time. It is indeed a Kanger pro tank. I had not primed it before using it, but I did let it sit for about 5 minutes before the first use. As for the metal shavings, I had seen on Grimmgreens site that it was an issue, so I thought I had better check and sure enough, metal shavings in both of the tanks I bought. Probably around 5-10 shavings per tank, the longest probably around 4-6 millimeters in length. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback! I'm glad I finally got around to registering. I use the site fairly frequently.

Ok, one more question. There was mention that I have wash and dry burn the wick and coil. Is this something that I need to do with every refill? Thanks again!

I don't use the ProTank as I'm happy with my Vision Vivi Nova BUT in researching I've read that the ProTank needs to be cleaned quite often. I was thinking of buying the ProTank but decided I was pleased with what I was using. Dry burning is also dependent on the PG/ VG juice ratio and the darkness of the juice. Darker juices will clog up coils quicker as will high VG based juice.

I hate to be a pest, but it all brings up so many more questions. The liquid I am using is clearish, it's a 65/35 pg/vg mix. The reason I chose this tank is because I had heard that citrus liquids tend to crack tanks that aren't Pyrex. After watching YouTube reviews, I went with pro tanks because of the Pyrex, stainless steel build, that and the replacement heads are very affordable. At least to this new vapers experience. My second choice was the vision vivi nova, because of the praises the reviewers lay on it. I can't remember what the deciding factor was, but it might have been pricing on replacement parts. Then again, I'm sure ill make my way to those too, eventually. This whole hobby/culture has so much information to chew through that it can get intimidating. However, I really like that aspect.
