I was very happy smoking American Spirit black or grey Perique blend but I moved to Yucatan Mexico and the availability of any decent cig is ZERO. Not even Dunhills. Was able to tolerate the Mex version of Camel filters for a month but I can no longer stand it. So I bought a smok Priv N19 vape pen. I found that most vapers inhale directly into the lungs and exhale, but when I smoke a cigarette I draw the smoke into my mouth first before inhaling into the lungs. vaping the way I smoke a cigarette was not pleasant and coughing was the result. Is this just a matter of PG/VG ratio adjustment or is it just not possible to vape in true cigarette emulation?

Depends on the device and coil. The 0.6 ohm coil for that device is for Direct to lung. There is a 0.8ohm coil designed for mouth to lung for the device. Have you tried the 0.8 ohm coil in the atomizer?

There should have been one of each type coil with the kit. Higher PG is also harsher.

Drawing a cig into your mouth before inhaling is considered mouth-to-lungs (mtl); most old school vapers started this way. I was never able to draw cigarette smoke straight into my lungs without hacking up.

What mg nic and pg/vg ratio are you using?

    Hi and welcome,
Something like the Zlide tube is a better kit for someone transitioning from smoking cigarettes.
IMO, the majority of Smok products are NOT suitable for beginners. YMMV.

I vape like I smoked; pull it into my mouth and then inhale.
I use simple round wire coils, not mesh or ceramic or "clapton" coils using 6mg/ml freebase nicotine.
    For almost 28 years,I was a professional smoker. I quit March 15 2012.

    Cheers

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That happened to me when I first started vaping but it went away. It would tickle my throat and make me cough. I think it was due to high PG juices, but it did go away.

The Innokin Zlide tube kit would suit you if you like the pen style starter kits. It's MTL and vapes very similar to a cigarette type draw

I will try the 0.8 ohm coil - I have the kit.

The only thing they had off the shelf in tobacco flavor was 50/50 salt and 50 mg nicotine. 50 nic sounds high but that's what the label says,,

That's good to hear! What's the ratio on the juice you use?

Guess I may be starting rumors, as I am unsure of the degree of truthfulness of the article (I cannot remember the title either) so take this with a grain of salt.
About 5 or 6 years ago, I read an article which explained why we often cough and/or our lungs feel "heavy" when first making the transition from smoking to vaping {aside from all the variations and combinations of vaping preference, which are huge factors). This article claimed that our lungs, handle cigarette smoke and vg/pg vapors differently. Cigarette smoke being rather dry, deeply penetrates the alveoli, whereas e-juice vapor is more dense. It was noted that it takes a little while (3-7 days average) for our body to adjust.

    I DIY with ~75%VG/25%PG.
When I switched from the Top-o-matic to vaping, I used 18mg/ml-24mg/ml 70%PG juice from china (Joyetech/Janty/Hangsen)

So the 75VG/25PG is what you found to be ideal for smoking like a cig (mouth to lungs)? If I were to try a juice with that ratio and 18-24 mg/ml with the device I have, I wouldn't achieve the result I'm looking for? It has 4 different settings...are they all too hot?

What you have got is really way way too high (and probably too high PG) for your vape. I was coughing my brains out with a DL setup with 12 mg/ml. This is not a good combination for you. Either get some new juice (or if you want, some pharmaceutical grade VG and dilute that sucker by.... a lot. Get it down to 12 or so, and see if DL is for you (I imagine the amount of dilution needed would well, a lot of the taste is gonna go.)

Most DL smokers are using 3--9 mg/ml max.

The other problem with your setup is it is adjustable but not THAT adjustable so your range of like, vape wattage is somewhat limited.

Good luck you have received much sage advice. I was quickly turned to MTL devices and have not looked back, thank goodness. DL is just not my thing, but I need my vape on the cool side and well, I don't want to suck it down in hot and breathless waves.

I settled on that ratio of PG/VG because it produced the vape I like from the equipment I use.
I could use that ratio in just about any device on the market today.
The PG/VG ratio is the least of your concerns at this point.
Focus on the TYPE of device you are using and the nicotine content of the juice you select.

And not to discourage you, but in over 8 years for vaping, the only thing that tastes and feels like a burning cigarette is a burning cigarette.

A MTL type vape will have a restricted draw. The airflow is low. ( think juice box straw)

A DTL type vape will have a more open, much less restricted draw. ( think garden hose)

The amount of vapor produced by each device varies, but in general, the more vapor = the more nicotine you get per puff = the lower the nicotine concentration can or should be.

You are currently using a DTL type device with a very high nicotine content juice.

Watch a few youtube review videos for your device. Notice the draw strength, speed and duration used by the reviewer. IMO, it is nothing like the way I was accustomed to smoking cigarettes and is a more "hookah" like technique.

Something like the Innokin Zlide tube kit is a bit closer to the experience you are in search of.
I would still suggest using a lower nicotine level with the Zlide, perhaps 20mg/ml of salt based nicotine or 10-12mg/ml for freebase nicotine. VG content of 50%-80%.

I'm gonna try 70/30 VG/PG with a 20mg/ml salt based on the zlide and see what happens. Somebody suggested to use
For my last decade or so of that disgusting habit I was smoking Native American Black's, and Camel's for a long time before that. Shortly after I started vapin' I became keen on a mix of turkish bold and mojito flavored pre-mixed juices. Now I vape an unflavored nicotine base sometimes with a little flavor added. You might get some info here about the coughing.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, once I started smoking American Spirits, it was impossible to go back to any other cig. Pure leaf tobacco w/no additives, the Perique flavor, and so tightly rolled - they are just in a class all by themselves.
