Well if your in the market get yourself an Ego Twist. Its a small, cheap variable voltage that will give you an idea..
If your already hellbent that you wanna vape, Get a Vamo v3 or higher, a decent charger, and some efest 18650 or efest 18350 unprotected battery's. You will also need juice. You will certainly need 2 batterys, as one will not keep you from smoking. Do NOT buy your battery's from ebay.
fasttech is a website to get many things for dirt cheap but it will take forever and 8 days to get to your door.

Whatever you choose, got to rockymountainvapor.com and enter 20rocky in the coupon code at checkout for 20% off. Free shipping at $14. Yet to find a better deal on the web. I bought the Ego C w/mini vivi nova kit in June. Love it and have yet to buy anything but juice since. A lot of people will recommend the twist. I won't argue with them, but if your like me having the ability to change the voltage would mean you're constantly changing the voltage :). I like to add juice and vape, no additional modification necessary.

Welcome to ECF, this place has an enormous amout of knowledge and information. The people here are as friendly and helpful as any I have ever met. An eGo is the style of battery the stick looking one 20131021_222629.jpg
They are an excellent starting point. They are cheap and versatile. Then there are the liquid holding parts, there are a bunch of different types, to start a clearo would be my recommendation. Depending on how much you want to spend I would say low end $8 retail is the kanger evod, higher end is the protank or the vivi nova. This is the part that actually heats up your eliquid also. The vivi nova has a top mounted liquid heater upper. The other two are on the bottom. Any questions feel free to ask

Top or bottom is preference, top coils offer a warmer vape bottom are a bit cooler. The liquid you vape will have a role in this too. If you want massive clouds, high VG and a thicker liquid bottom coil would be your best bet so you are not fighting wicking. If you want more flavor and want more throat kick, high PG is the way to go... with a top coil. I personally like the Vivi Novas
