Nothing special, but I'm proud of myself

Yesterday I got my first shipment of supplies from Wizard Labs. It was going to be my first venture into DIY, so I wanted to keep it simple. I got 1 gallon of VG, 0.5L PG, and a dozen bottles of a few flavors from different companies. I stuck with the flavors I like so I could determine what company makes flavors that I like the most.

Today, I just mixed my first batch of raspberry from Cappella. I made a 60VG:40PG, 10% flavor. Mixed it really well with a standard pipette technique, then shook it up. My first vape off of it, and I must say, it's pretty tasty.

Obviously, it's nothing special, and I shouldn't be proud of myself for something so simple. But don't you guys remember how it felt the first time you mixed your own juice?

I think Anytime someone makes a DIY mix that they like that it is Pretty Cool. And getting one Right Off the Bat is Extra Cool.

Right On Zabolee.

It's not something I'll be making a batch of. I just wanted o try that flavor. I was planning on making 5ml batches of all of the flavors I got, just to see how they tasted individually. Then I'll start mixing recipes.

I only stopped at the one because I have a couple of broken ribs in my back, and sitting on stools at my table started to hurt. Plus I need to clean the table off more, so I can spread out my supplies better

Sometimes getting a Single Flavor perfected can be a Good Thing. Even if you Don't plan to Vape it Straight. Because you can Use It to blend into Other Mixes. And simply adjust the Percentage of the Blend and not have to worry about Steeping Changes.

Broken Ribs. Yikes. Been there - Done that.

They can be Very Painful. And that Out of the Blue Sneeze is the Worst.

I'm looking for a good raspberry or pineapple cheesecake recipe to try. I've found a few that look promising, and I think I have most of the concentrates I need. One calls for custard, which I'm probably going to avoid. Any idea on a substitute for that?

---

I think it's worse than normal because they aren't broken on my chest. They are broken along my back. And I've got 2 dogs that are really needy and want to go out constantly, so I've got them pulling me while I'm trying to take each step carefully. And when they see a squirrel, that's the worst.

I really Don't know what would be a Good Substitute for a Custard. I've moved away from Flavorings that contain Diketones. And haven't kept up with what people say tastes Good and what is supposed to taste Bad.

Broken Ribs are just Bad. But broken Back Ribs are probably worse that Front Ribs. It can take a Long Time for them to Fully Heal. So I wouldn't Push it anymore than you have to.

How did you do it? Car Accident?

I tend to like my own tastes, too. I may try some people's advice, but I don't take "this is the best juice" as gospel, either. I like Vape Wild. It's not a premium juice, but I like them. No reason to get all high and mighty about what is or isn't good. I'm glad you feel the same way.

lol. Nope. Fell down the stairs carrying some dirty mugs. A couple of years ago, I pulled up the carpet on our whole downstairs and the steps. It was a surprise for my wife when she got home from work. She always wanted wooden floors, and we knew the natural wood was in good condition. Then about a year ago, we were dog sitting, and the dog was really old and had hip dysplasia. So we bought some of those stair mats to give her more traction if she wanted to come upstairs. But we never got around to taping them down. Every once in a while they slide off the steps. Normally I try to make sure they are at least flat on the step, but one slid right out from under me, and I slammed my spine against the edge of a step. Luckily I didn't drop any of the mugs. See where my priorities were.

It actually barely hurt the first few hours, but shock will do that to you. It's gotten progressively worse over the past few days. I didn't see any reason to go to the hospital, since everything I've read about broken ribs say that the only difference in treatment between bruised and broken ribs is the pain meds and the length of time they take to heal. I don't have any bruising, so I know there isn't any internal bleeding. At this point, I just take Advil every few hours, and use and heating pad and ice packs. Bending over and sleeping are the worst right now. But I'm pretty sure I'll heal alright. And since my wife's father had a stroke, and her grandmother is in the hospital, I don't want to put her through any more than she has already been through. She doesn't need to get a call that her husband is in the hospital too.

TFA Vanilla Swirl mixed with TFA DX Bavarian Cream makes an outstanding diketone-free custard flavor -- the Vanilla Swirl actually is TFA's Vanilla Custard with the diketones removed, but it's more vanilla than custard -- the DX Bavarian gives it the richness of custard. Stay at 6% or less of the DX Bavarian to avoid the butyric acid whang.

Kudos on your first mix -- my first one was actually horrid, but my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th got a lot better. The Strawberries & Cream that I make was my first big success, and it was actually my first really ambitious mix.

Andria, Thanks. I was planning on just skipping that one, and I still might. I haven't heard much of butyric acid. I know it's a replacement for diacetyl, but I haven't come across any reports of negative effects like our other buttery chemicals. What else do you know about it, other than it's vomit factor?

It's essentially safe; the only cautions are that it may be irritating, but in the levels that we use, I really doubt it -- I think the irritant is for those dealing with it on an industrial level. I think the taste would prohibit vaping it in levels that would be irritating -- it doesn't taste that great on its own, which is why that DX bavarian is best when mixed with some other cream -- Capella Sweet Cream, or TFA Vanilla Swirl. I use that Dx Bavarian at about 5.5%-6% in my strawberry & cream, and it contributes a nice custardy flavor, mixed with the vanilla swirl and CAP Sweet Cream.

Sketchness, Thanks for the article. I'm always a little weary when people misspell general scientific words, but the idea was clear. I'll keep looking, but I'm a little more comfortable with using it now.

Andria. I generally like a subtle hint of cream. Not too much, so I'm sure I'd be using it it smaller concentrations than that anyway. Good to know what works, though

And for the 1 day update on my raspberry mix...
Not that great. Not bad tasting, but very muted. I'm assuming that is because I only made it 10%. If I up the concentration, I hope it will taste stronger.

just know that raspberry is a difficult flavor. Many people have trouble with it or it is perfumey to them. a touch of citric acid or a little bit of strawberry can help this flavor tremendously.

You really should give that New Mix a couple of Days to "Steep" before thinking about making any Changes.

Awesome. I haven't looked into citric acid until just now. One place said it should not be used at more than 0.5-1mg/ml. But they didn't say what their concentrations were.
Do you just mix it as a percentage? Or would it just be easier to try using some strawberry first?

Zoidman, I won't be making any changes to that batch. First it's too small, and not really worth trying to measure out .0x ml of something with the supplies I currently have. I didn't get any syringes that I'd trust to accurately measure that small

I think this is Something that Many New DIY-ers get hung up with. Trying to Make Single Flavors that taste like what they want it to Taste Like.

Most Flavors in Candy/Foods, like Raspberry, are not made be using a Single Flavoring. But have the Main Flavor, and then Other Flavors that "Bend" it in Different Directions.

Adding a Touch of Strawberry can be a Good Call. Also, adding a Little Pineapple can give it some "Pop". Or adding a tad of Peach can Even it Out.
