For my area, I did the math with the estimated smokers number, how much taxes per pack, an average of how much they smoke in a week, etc.

Came out that my city would lose half a million per week is just 20% of smokers quit smoking. That's just a medium size city, didn't even count the surrounding municipalities.

I'd expect nothing less of NY and especially NYC, over taxation is SOP there. NY recently tried and failed to pass a 95% wholesale tax on vape goods so now they're simply trying a different approach and will continue pushing different tax (extortion) schemes until one finally does pass. Once passed they will push to increase it annually until 90% of the products retail cost is tax, as I said it's just SOP for NY. However, NY isn't the only state eyeing this new potential source of tax revenue http://www.stopvapetaxes.org/sites/default/files/assets/June 12 Vapor Tax Map 2016 (1).pdf Once the FDA deemed everything associated with vaping to be "tobacco products" the tax floodgates were opened.

My problem with all this is the targeted nature of these taxes. It would be one thing if said taxes affected everything equally but to be able to pick out and target certain products just because you ( PTB ) don't like them and/or think they are unhealthy options is not only unfair, it's unjust regardless of whatever motivation(s) might be in play.

Why is it that vape products are the new object of potential use taxes yet other NRT's that also contain nicotine are seemingly immune?

I think we all know the answer to that question.

The way most of these laws are written FDA approved devices are expempt? Does that mean any liquids or devices approved by the FDA are exempt from state taxes as the law is written? This fine point may be why the FDA might allow a vape product to be sold but not allow any health claims. Then can the states discriminate between gum and patches, and vaping? (It's beside the point that gum and patches don't work but vaping does.) Hmm, this impressively corrupt. They are really really good at this.

Look at Chicago on that map. 55 cents an ml. That more than doubles the price of a 15.00 bottle of 30ml ejuice. That's just crazy.

The gum and patches were approved as drugs. No sales tax levies on drugs. Prescription or over the counter. At least in NY State, but I do think it's a national thing.

Drugs, right. I was walking the neighborhood today and ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in a couple of years, younger than me. She saw my vape and asked what was in there, tobacco or, well, that other stuff. When I said it was for not smoking, she was skeptical, had to ask me again.
