I got my Riva 510 yesterday. Works well. After 5 hours I noticed that I can't stand the taste/ smell. Back to nasty analogs. Not willing to give this up! I sniffed all my juices, it seems to be the "base" not the flavoring. I have 8 diff. flavors, nic. levels, all are PG. What are my options here??

    Switch to VG?

    Switch supplier? [LF]

Can I add food flavoring to overwhelm the base ?

I can't afford to chase down the perfect juice. I would be happy with something that tastes like an after dinner mint.

TY very much for any advice-Bob

I think the hardest part is finding the right juice FOR YOU. It's a trial and error thing that cannot be avoided. You have to buy some various small bottles of juice until you find something that YOU like. Everyone has different tastes and preferences. But you're right, dont give up, just keep on truckin on till you make it work for you. You'll be very glad you did :)

The hardest part when you are starting off is finding the juice that becomes your daily vape. It took me a long while to finally find a supplier that had a flavor that knocked my socks off. As someone that is working really hard on quitting analogs, I think the trick is that you need two juices that you absolutely love that you rotate throughout the day.

As far as your questions, I like a mixture of PG and VG. VG gives you much more vapor production and a stronger throat hit.

Supplier - that's what I did. I tried several different suppliers until I found one recently that I am now very, very happy with.

Food flavoring - you can add some flavors, but it's not standard food flavorings. Check out the DIY juice threads for how people do that. I haven't tried it myself to be honest.

What flavor do you think you'd like best? Coffee, fruit, candy, etc....?

Well.. the base PG or VG don't have a smell to them. and alone they have a very mild sweetness. VG is more sweet.
You might want to order just plain PG or VG with Nicotine and try that. No flavor added.

have you have ever been to a rock concert, Halloween store, or party with fake fog? If that didn't smell nasty to you then its not the base PG/VG turning you off. Those fog machines use PG to make the fog.

I know it may cost, but give it some more attention before giving up.

Finding the perfect juice is often the most difficult part of vaping. Some need to sit for a while so the flavors can mix. It's referred to as steeping. If the flavor is kind of peppery it's the nicotine that's causing it. If it's flowery it's probably the flavorings. In my experience if you steep it for a week or so it'll at least mostly go away. You can't really use food flavorings to help them out because they aren't strong enough. If you want to try adding flavor you could possibly locate some Lorann's flavorings which are much more concentrated. They're sold at stores like Hobby Lobby, and even some Walmart's carry them. They come in tiny little 1 dram bottles and are often sold in 2 packs for around $2. Personally I'd just let them steep, but in the meantime I'd order from another vendor so you increase your chances of finding something palatable.

Like others have said, get juices with a mix of PG and VG. PG is very harsh and VG will help smooth out the juice, give it a bit of sweetness and create more vapor. Adding more flavoring can make a juice taste worse, so I wouldn't go that route. The flavorings we DIY folks use are concentrated flavors that can be difficult to find on the open market. You can buy VG at almost any pharmacy like CVS or Walgren's. You can also buy it in the pharmacy section of Walmart and some grocery stores. The bottle has to say USP on it and it will probably just say "Glycerin" and that it's a skin protectant, but that's the right stuff. It's very cheap and you can try adding some of that to your juice. The only draw back is that it's going to dilute the nic level and the flavor.

One thing for me was using 2 ohm cartos. When I first got a Riva kit I did try an atty, taste and vapor were blecch. Coming from 808 family I was pretty sure it was simply lack of power, fortunately I had ordered lower ohm cartos and then life was good again.

(Later I metered that one atty -- it actually was 3.4 ohms, way too high for use with a Riva. I tested multiple other atties and cartos, got the readings I expected, but that one atty I had tried, included with the kit, was consistent at 3.4 -- no wonder I was dissatisfied :) )

I think everyone goes thru a "rough start". There are so many variables, and things are different from one person to the next. My wife and I started vaping at the same time. I went thru various flavors as well as testing atty's, dripping, carts, cartos. There was so much trial & error involved and spent a lot of money in the process. My wife went thru the same thing too, so we had double the expense. We bought a lot of flavors that we thought we would love, and ended up hating. Had some flavors that were good, but didn't really work as an all day vape (we would burn out on the flavor before the end of the day). And even when we found our "all day vape" flavors, we quickly discovered that the flavors vary from one supplier to the next- so when you find a flavor you like, don't think you're going to buy it from a different supplier and have it taste exactly the same. Stick with the original source that you liked.

In the end, the wife and I have 3 or 4 flavors we can vape all day. And our flavors are totally different- in fact, I can't stand the ones she likes, and she can't stand mine. We also ended up preferring different vaping- she prefers dripping, I prefer cartos. She says she gets more flavor from dripping, and I get more flavor from cartos- go figure... So its obvious that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to vaping. Stick with it and experiment with flavors and different ways to vape. You'll find it, and when you do you won't even consider smoking an analog.

I guess I'll try another supplier. I assumed it was the base because if I sniff ANY bottle, the smell I don't like is there. I was worried about vaping because I don't have a sweetooth, and I read here that the juices are very sweet. Yet I'm only getting a background flavor, nothing sweet.

My Atty was clean and dry on delivery, and I blew it out anyway.

You can let those juices sit for a couple of days and try them again. Steeping sometimes makes the difference with juices that don't smell or taste right. Since you just started vaping, your sense of smell and taste are probably still recovering. Taste is directly connected to smell and it'll take some time for both of those to return to normal.

Sorry to read about your rough start. We have a rather large 'rough start' club around here. Most of us have had a problem or two along the way.

Please make sure your atty is wet. A dry atty will give you a miserable experience. Others have talked about juice and you've received some great advice.

I always recommend folks new to vaping order sample or small sizes of juice. I know about the shipping fee monster. But small bottles / samples mean you will not be sitting with a huge bottle of juice you really do not like.

Your taste buds are changing as I type this note. Do not throw away juices that taste bad today. You might like them later on. Some people blend their juices together and come up with a flavor they like.

Happy Vaping and wishing you all the best,
    Paula

Finding the perfect juice is a trial and error thing till you find stuff to your liking.
I been vaping for a month and a half and i'm still trying out different juices from different vendors.
It's a transition process i know i have to go through till i find what hits.
My Riva and it's standard 510 atty tasted a lil weird thru the first 2 days. It was all fine after the initial break-in was done.
Try to order from a different vendor every time, maybe a different kit also if it works.
If you care for more vapor, then increase the mix of VG in your juices, if you bend more towards throat hit then keep the PG on a higher level. A 70/30 PG/VG blend works fine for me. Some of the good vendors will let you choose your mix, along with nic content. There's a fair chance that the vendor will carry the flavor of the smokes you used to smoke.
Watch out for the altered names, to avoid copyright issues, vendors will have Marlboro as (for example) Maxi-Boro.. etc.
Keep the faith brother, patience will pay off.
Do or spend whatever you need to to get off those fkn cancer sticks!!!!

First - did you get rid of the primer in your atty first? That stuff tastes awful. You need to blow out the atty into a tissue, prime the atty by dropping 2-3 drops of juice on the bridge ( this /\ thing), wait to let it soak in then vape that mostly off without inhaling. Blow out again, re-prime and vape some of that off then check how it is on inhale. Repeat if needed.

Nicotine tastes bad and is harsh. That's where TH comes from. If you got high nicotine you may taste it. PG lets through the most of harshness and flavor. VG dulls it the most but makes more vapor. A nice compromise is around 70pg/30vg for me.

Those PG Chinese juices are not the pinnacle of ejuices. But don't expect to taste tobacco. You taste cigs because they cover you in smoke. You need to let your nose have some of the ecig vapor - let a bit it waft out of your mouth so your nose can catch it on the inhale.

Note - some actual flavors that are in many cigarettes are cocoa and honey or sugar. I like tobaccos w/ cocoa added. I add FreedomSmokeUSA Cocoa (non-sweet) or Chocolate (sweeter) ejuice. Some people like sweet tobaccos like Honey Flue Cured or caramel tobaccos like RY4s or nutty tobaccos like 555's.

My recommendation for a base tobacco that's a bit nutty and pungent like analogs is FreedomSmokeUSA Desert Ship (and it has other fans too). I like to change up the flavor occasionally with FSUSA cocoa, chocolate, vanilla or light caramel like oRYental 4 (a light caramelly RY4)

I agree. Hold onto them. They have a long shelf life and your tastes WILL change as will the juices till they are fully steeped. Then if you still don't like them you can blend them with something else.

Post #12 nails it with the use of menthol in my opinion. That method makes a nice clean not overpowering vape...just go easy with the menthol and test each time you add some so you don't get too much.

Good luck to you and sorry you're having this problems. A good vendor with clean tasting menthol and minty flavors at a great price IMO is MadVapes. Personal taste is a such a big issue and lots of users like Ms. T's but I find her juices to have complicated background tastes and smells. You may want to try a "cleaner" mix (for lack of a better word) if you already dislike some juice smells.
