Good morning. CES, from what I've seen, most people go ahead and replace the unit and furnace in one shot. However, twelve years old doesn't seem that old to me. My units are older than that and work fine. I would look at the cost of the compressor versus the whole unit. I would think you could get several more years of service out of the one you have if you decide to fix it. I guess it all boils down to finances. Considering the age of yours, if it was me and I could get it fixed for under 800 then I might just get it fixed. One other thing to consider is that if you have a commercial company do it then there is a huge mark up. My neighbor next door said he knows an engineer that said he would replace his for 3k when he needed it. That in comparison of normally around 7-8k if you call a commercial outfit. I don't know if you do or not but if you could find a friend of a friend to do it then you could save a bunch.

Wow. 3-8K for a new unit is much more than i expected. Unless it includes replacing the furnace too. I just checked my paperwork, and the unit is about 14 years old, not 12. I need to replace my windows too, so unless replacement is significantly less, or repair is significantly more, I'll probably go for repair. It's a smaller local company, but i don't really know anyone i'd trust to do the work.

I guess I'll wait and see what the people i contacted have to say about it. It's really helpful to have an idea of the pricing though. Speed is going to be important, cause i have a pretty good heat tolerance, but even i don't sleep well at 85 degrees.

And on that note, time to get ready for work (where my office is frigid)

Good luck CES. I hope the repair is affordable. I have my fingers crossed that my units hold up for a while longer. With my oldest heading off to college and my wife not working, I can't afford much of anything as far as home improvement goes. My wife got a crown put on yesterday so that was a big bill since my company doesn't offer dental insurance. I do pay for a separate dental discount plan but it didn't save us much on the crown. We do get considerable savings on cleanings and other minor procedures but for some reason the crown was a minimal discount.

Yeah, the crown was about nine hundred and that was with a $70 discount. I don't quite understand the small discount. I get almost that much discounted on a filling. A lot of the cost must come from paying the lab to make the crown since they don't do it in house. Like everything else the cost has increased. I got one done five or six years ago by the same dentist and it was seven something.
