Dang...

I'd just spent yesterday recovering data for a client and today, reinstalling his Windows after the corruption he had. One of the things I left him to do ( so I wouldn't be charging him for pretty easy stuff ) was to install the software he had put on including the MS Office software.

He didn't have his software ( it was a download version he'd purchased ) so he was suppose to go to MS's website and redownload it and finish installing etc. Apparently he typed in something wrong and ended up getting a scam artist instead... the software wouldn't activate ( probably cause it really wasn't from MS ) and took him to a website to "fix" it which directed him to call their support line... they told him he was infected and that was blocking the activation... then quoted him $150 to clean it up for him. Since MS doesn't do that type of work or charge for things related to software purchased through them... as soon as I heard about it ( his wife called concerned )... I told him to just turn off the computer and I'd take care of it tomorrow ( without additional charges no less ).

Luckily... one of the things I did for him after getting the computer resetup... was create a complete image backup of the system that could be used in the event of an emergency or other issue. So I'll restore that backup, which won't take long... Then we can get onto downloading the proper software for him.

So if you ever get told to call any software company and then they tell you that you need to pay them to install their product... Don't do it... something is likely to be up. Most companies will provide basic support services such as installation help at no additional charge. The few that do charge, have probably spelled that out to you to begin with.

Microsoft will never call you and tell you your computer is infected... they also don't charge for basic support services, only rare cases will they and then only when it is actually outside the scope of normal stuff.

Oh Ag's and Classy since your pretty close to the forecasted tracks and all..

Ag's... you are no longer in the dead center of the track... although you are still within the forecast cone area. The center has been moved slightly north of you now.... Maybe it'll still move further...
