Had to fax trucking papers in after all the runs the ole man had to do paperwork. I now use Epson printers. They werk good fer me. Butts they is ezpensibes fer da ink in my opiniums. Actuallys I feel dey ALL kimds is spenibes fer da ink

The inkjet I have at home is an Epson and it does print nice photo's... my ink is currently dried up so it in need of replacement but as you mentioned, it's a bit pricey considering their approx yield they have. They have a new set of printers using their 252 series of inks that are suppose to get thousands of pages ( they don't list expected yields now but generics do ). Unfortunately, I'm also reading a lot of complaints on their replacement cartridges having problems. I'm uncertain if they are getting fakes or if they really are from Epson. Either way, I was playing it safe and being skeptical assuming the reports are from genuine cartridges.
On the otherhand, if you don't mind paying up front on the printer... Epson also has their Supertank line that starts at around $280 for no fax and $400 with fax and uses bottle refills instead of cartridges. The bottles give you around 4,000 pages for black and 6,500 color ( remember they judge it on spot color, not full photo prints ). A bottle of black or color ink is around $10-12 so it's much cheaper to print if you can stand the initial price of the printer.
Brother also has an office line they refer to as INKvestment that has pretty impressive paper yields for a cartridge based printer. The carts do cost more than what Epson's bottles will run you but the printers don't start out as high priced ( still in the $235-260 range though to start ). What makes them nice is these lower cost units already include the fax options and with the Epson it'll run you the $400 and up range.
