Yesterday, my Dad had me come up and help him setup their first step into home automation...
He picked up 3 Echo Dot's... for 3 different rooms in their home. Two for bedrooms and one for the living room.
His intent is to help Mom with some things that are currently a little tricky for her since she started having more problems with her macular degeneration... Primarily making phone calls since she has trouble seeing her phone number lists and other things. They can also be handy if they've fallen and are having problems getting up or to a phone, something that's been an issue since they've reached their golden years.
Now if she wants to call someone... she just has to say "Alexa call Randy at his cell/home/work" ( or whomever ). It can also double as an intercom system so they can "call" each other from other rooms in the house.
Of course that's just the tip of the iceberg of things it can do if they want it too... like getting the current weather or the forecast is also just a question away. It can also work with other smart
devices to turn on the lights, start the coffee, play music, control the TV, lock/unlock doors and many other things.
Currently... or at least yesterday when I was there setting it up... Mom is being a bit of a stubborn technophobe about it... giving us that "Well I don't know" look... I suspect she'll come around as soon as she figures out that there really is nothing to have to figure out about it...
You must have an always on internet connection since the "Alexa assistant" is cloud based which also requires an Amazon account ( no subscription is needed for the basic stuff ) and you must have an Android or iPhone smartphone to setup and configure everything. The only tricky part of the setup is bouncing back and forth from the Amazon Alexa app and the bluetooth/wifi settings in your phone... but it's pretty straight forward beyond that.
