Hey OBG, when you get a sec, your thoughts on this?

Did my first cut today. Oil, air filters, etc good, batt charged to 13.4V. Forgot to use the choke on the first start and had to quick charge the batt again (it had been sitting for a few days after first charge after winter). Anyway, ran fine. Drove it out to the main area, and dang, as soon as I lowered the cutting deck it conked out. Four times. Smelled a slight burn smell, so I was thinking the cutter's drive belt. Then I raised the deck height a notch, tried again, and it ran good. After about 15 mins lowered the deck down to my usual position and it ran fine then too, no burn smell. Had to put in reverse many times (raising the deck of course), and each time I went back to drive and lowered the deck, it was fine! It's a Troy-Bilt 17.5 HP. Seems fine now, just was weird that it did that. Have you seen that before?

J I think AG is correct ! could have been old dried up stuff from last year slowing things down, did you wash out the underside of your deck at the end of the season last year ?I would reach up under there and make sure everything is spinning(mower off !!)like it should with the belt tension off of the belt and look the belt over.

One other thing if you disconnect the neg.battery cable and charge you battery before winter they last longer, then clean everything up and reconnect in the spring :2c:I'm at 5 years on the one in mine, most of the time I charge it about 1/2 way through the winter too.:)

This is what I use on the bike and mower it's a good one for small stuff it can't burn up your battery.

I'd also mention that if the belt has some age on it, it could be getting a little stiff and may be more prone to slipping etc. If that's the case, it may be wise to get a spare just in case.
