I hadn't even thought of that  Thank you I will check it out right now :D

If you can get to the Terminal Screen (looks like an old time black DOS terminal window and called "command prompt") by going to START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES (sometimes also SYSTEM TOOLS) and look for COMMAND PROMPT. Open it, and then type MSCONFIG and hit Return, which will open a program that lets you look at what is loading at startup, and also un-select what you don't want to load.

You view the startup items by selecting the "STARTUP" tab in the MSCONFIG program.

You may have to many programs loading at start up using up all of your ram. I am not a tech, but have had a similar problem.

I hadn't even thought of that  Thank you I will check it out right now :D

Dang! Why didn't I think of that??

Do you have "CCleaner"? It's a free program that will clean out your registry and "orphaned" files, as well as give you an excellent way to see and disable all programs scheduled to start with Windows. CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download Really easy to use, and not a resource hogger. :) PM me if you have questions. :D

NO to puter funerals!

Before the funeral you could back up all of your files and do a system restore or format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Then upload your files back to the hard drive. If you have to format make sure you have all the cds for the operating system and drivers.

MM:
4 years is nothing in the life of a laptop. I have been repairing them for 20 years. If you want to save the one you have you can call me.
I can talk ya through a couple of tests and determine what the problem is.
PM me and I will give you my cell number.
Would you feel in your opinion that it would be worth saving it ? I have an HP G61-631 NR Notebook. The internal fan doesn't work anymore (made all kinds of noises then quit), I have cooling pad fans under it and also have to have a small fan blowing next to it just to keep it from over heating and shutting down anyways. Now the power button (which used to be a light touch on it to power) I have to really REALLY push down hard on it to get it to power on at all. The fan quit right after the warranty went @ 2 years. So I just figured like most stuff, the ife span was the life span of the warranty

So, I'd have to pay some one to fix on it anyways. How much anyone charges I have no idea.

Hey Firechick,
I used to live in Interlaken (just a stones throw from Ovid) on Cayuga lake. I know what you mean, I'm sure I would have gotten the "what the hell is that in your mouth" looks from the neighbors. It's 72 degrees here in Calif but I do miss the seasons in the finger lakes.
NMC.
By the way, the volunteer Ovid Fire Dept has the BEST BBQ.

Got the best horse I ever owned out of a cow pasture in Ovid. :) My nephew is in Cali, Camp Pendleton at the moment. I'll have to see about hittin' those Ovid boys up for some chicken this year. Try to get one from each dept. around here during the summer.

Got my very fist VV today. (NOT your fault Eric, the Post Office didn't get it out of the snow area until Wednesday.) I'm starting to see what y'all see in these things. Now I'm afraid I really get to like this and then the FDA will shut them down and prices will go way up again.

That laptop tilts things toward the replace laptop scenario. It is the same laptop as the hp/compaq presario cq61. Here are the instructions for replacing the laptop fan and replacing the thermal paste used to ensure heat transfer.
How to disassemble Compaq CQ61 - pc-level.com

This model is one where you have to disassemble the entire laptop since the fan and heatpipe assembly are between the motherboard and the plastic base.

The hard drive should be tested using the utility that comes up when you tap the f2 key when the bios /hp logo first appears. It is quick so keep tapping the f2 key while doing the power on. If you miss it tell windows to restart and keep tapping the f2 key until you get in.

Run the drive diagnostics and note any error codes.

Software wise, malware can cause slow boot and downloading malwarebytes antimalware from Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download can find most malware that can slip behind commercial popular antivirus programs.

Hp makes some easy to repair laptops and most of them can be found by searching for "HP Business Line Probook"

My hp 4530s has one screw that locks the entire back in place so I can pop it off and replace ram, wifi, drives or fan assembly in minutes.

You do not have to spend more than 400 to 700 on a laptop to get a good one. It would take me probably 3 hours to replace parts on your laptop even if we knew all the parts that need replacing. In a commercial environment (a shop) this would surely exceed the value of the current laptop and probably exceed the cost of the lower end new laptops from HP/Compaq, Lenovo or Toshiba. If you were closer to Seattle I could fix it for free if you are on a fixed income or on a sliding scale based on your income. I even have a cq61 in the dead laptops pile here in my store room.

If the power button is failing then that may also indicate a problem that needs a major part replaced. (motherboard)

For reference, here is the service manual for this laptop. You may find someone near you who could repair your laptop using this reference.

good luck :)
