I wish they never called them "e-cigarettes." I think that's what makes them so misleading, and it's so hard to convince people that that's not what they are - especially when they look so awesome, cool and realistic. I think that there's a witch hunt thing going on too with these, with all the residual stigma from analogs. Sucks when you have to deal with people that are just too close-minded to hear anything you have to say about them. It's like the '50s all over again. Good luck, Star.

I totally agree - people see/hear the word 'cigarette' and they shut down right there. But heck, in the 50s they were all the rage, even Fred Flintstone did commercials.

That's such a pile of $&!%... How do they test you for nicotine? Maybe just tell them you switched to nic gum if they push the issue. Man is that frustrating
Sorry Star.

I thought about doing just that. Although the HR manager knows better. Even she doesn't know how they plan on carrying out the test or what things they are testing for. I assume it would be like a drug test. Maybe I can claim I belong to a sect that uses PVs for religious rituals. :)

He was hand raised so love's his morning scratches and will come out of his heated house for a cuddle when you call him. He can also distinguish who calls him. For instance he knows mum is the bearer of snails and i am the bearer of run around time in the secured sun room.
Hi saber, its definately alot of good fun in here.
Uncle it has i drawbacks, ups n downs, dont want to live alone forever though.
A quiet night here, doing a shift for a friend. Hometime is a loooooong way off.

I noticed that they did not list Snus either...that is surprising...although it is a tobacco product. Some e-liquids do use tobacco extracts for flavoring so that is likely why it is listed (other than stigma). If you ever get tested just tell them you are italian and eat a LOT of tomatoes! :)

There is alot of studies comming out that are verifying the health benefit of eliqid use VS tobacco so I would cite as many as you can and point them at CASAA as they are a respected organization with comparative analysis information available. It may just help with the fight.

Wish I would have found the VOLT before vapefest, I think my purchases would have been much different...I think I will pick up one of the tobacco samplers to get me started.

I am distraught! At work we just got all the information regarding the 2012 Health Insurance. In prior years you had to say you don't smoke or they would add $50 a month to the premiums. Of course I lied. This year I was happy to finally truthfully say I do not smoke.
But now for next year it will be $70 and they are going to do random testing of people that claim the no-smoking discount. It specifically says you "do not use tobacco" then lists "cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chew & e-cigarettes". What?!?! Noooo!!! 8-o

So I write my HR Mgr. (who sells a lesser brand on the side) asking if she couldn't do something about this - Are they just misinformed? Do they need accurate info? Then went down to talk to her in person. She is well aware that these are not the same as those tobacco products, and if it is nicotine they are worried about, she knows that's found even in innocent things, like a potato. What if I was using Nicorette? That would show nic in my system, but gum/patches are allowed. So this is frustrating.
She forwarded my email to her boss and said they've heard from several people upset about it like me. She said the Corporate mucky mucks were going to review this new policy, and maybe they'll modify it. But nothing is certain yet. Corporate is a very uptight bunch of folks so I don't have high hopes that they'll make the right decision, but keep your fingers crossed for me :nun:

One thing I find so irritating about this is that they don't say you can't get drunk at home, yet excessive alcohol use causes health problems. They don't say you can't each a whole cheesecake every night, yet obesity causes health problems. But noooo, let's ban the one and only thing that got me off cigarettes. grumble grumble

Hey Starsong, I was touched/angered by your story. I originally came here and to vaping because of similar changes to the health care plan at my company. Premiums for me are up to about $300 a month; they go up every year, I'm used to that, but unless I was able to certify that I am tobacco-free by Oct. 1 and take a wellness health risk assessment requiring a trip to the doc for tests, my deductible was going to $3000 per person and copays from $30 to $50.

And they do have what we call the 'McDonald's' clause in there - for example, I have an employee who has a serious weight issue. At her assessment they gave her some routine advice about managing her health through diet and exercise. If she chooses not to comply and develops any obesity-related issues she will be bumped to the same plan as a smoker and put on 'case management', and that is the first step to dropping you altogether. Same as if I kept smoking and developed a nice case of COPD, it's the 'we told you so' method of health care.

On the upside, and I hope you tell them this, one of our very own HR directors at home office used an ecig to quit, and the company specifically lists them as acceptable under who will be considered tobacco free. They are even paying for my first 6 months of quit supplies up to $600 so everything I've spent so far is reimbursed to me, as an incentive. If your company is serious about saving money and lost productivity this is the direction they should be going.

You can imagine the panic I felt at being told I had to quit smoking or pay for health care at a rate I couldn't afford, but in hindsight it was the best thing for me because it brought me here, and I continue to be thrilled every day I don't smoke.

Good luck, starsong, fight the good fight! Be Voltastic!

What if you were using 0-nic?

Might be a perfect reason to order a bottle and try it out. Then you could claim you dont use any nicotine products truthfully (kind of) and if they called you on it you could point out a 0-nic bottle and say you were at the end of a slow wean off the hard-juice and have switched to a nic-less life at that point.

You know, there is another option too though... Dont pick it up, and instead go with Obamacare like the Government ultimately wants everyone to do anyway. Just remember though

That tongue is awesome! I cant believe its really that blue. Its fantastic...

So leads to a question though; does he get excited if you use a light-blue Volt?
