They started showing four or five Carson interviews with classic stars on Monday nights, followed by a movie starring one of them. They've sprinkled a few more interviews throughout some weeks when they're paying tribute to a star.

It's scary, and sad, to say I haven't watched Young Frankenstein in probably 15 years. I'm definitely recording it!

August is "Summer Under the Stars" on TCM -- each day is for one star. I suspect most people here won't be interested because they're old movies and have all that stupid stuff like plots, sharp dialogue, and believable characters, with few explosions, car chases, or glowing aliens.

Bogie is Thursday, but I'm looking forward to Saturday with Alec Guinness. In The Lavender Hill Mob he's a timid old bank clerk who masterminds the robbery of a gold shipment. In The Ladykillers he's the mastermind of an armored car robbery. In Kind Hearts and Coronets he doesn't steal anything, just kills all his relatives who stand between him and an inheritance. The other movies of the day are great, but none of them are as hilarious as those three.

Steve McQueen (Bullitt, The Cincinnati Kid, The Blob) is Friday of next week.

Catherine Denevue is on the 12th. I like watching people's reactions the first time they watch The Umbrellas of Cherbourg! :) And Belle de Jour, where she's a part-time prostitute, is one of her best.

Other highlights of the month (for me):
Soylent Green (Charlton Heston)
Double Indemnity (Fred MacMurray)
The Male Animal (Henry Fonda)
The King's Thief (Ann Blyth)
The Great Race (Natalie Wood)
The Mad Miss Manton (Hattie McDaniel)
The Lady Eve (Charles Coburn)
The Anderson Tapes (Martin Balsam)
The Cheyenne Social Club (Shirley Jones) (and my biggest regret is they're not showing The Trouble with Harry on her day, because a comedy by Hitchcock is not to be missed)

When is Robert Mitchum day? Who needs car chases? I need Thunder Road :)

hdrp_0602_best_car_movies_06_z+thunder_road.jpg

From Hot Rod Magazine Poll "The Top Car Movies Ever Made and the One You Voted as the Best"

6> Thunder Road (1958)

Director: Arthur Ripley

Stars: '50 Ford, '57 Chevy, '57 Ford

People: Robert Mitchum, Gene Barry

Why: Of all the tales of moonshine running, Thunder Road remains the best, first because it has tough-guy Robert Mitchum in the lead, second because seeing a '50 Ford driven hard is always fascinating, and third because the action is so good you almost forget the movie is in black and white.
Plus the cops have a '57 Chevy that grabs onto suspect vehicles' bumpers.
Filmed on location around Asheville, North Carolina,Thunder Road may not be authentic, but it looks it.

Trivia: The 'shine cars in the film were supposedly bought from actual runners. And the primary stunt driver was Carey Loftin.

There were few car chases, but the ones there were became iconic and have never been bested.

Thunder Road was shown in March, and it's not on the schedule for the foreseeable future -- Mitchum isn't getting his own SUTS day this year, September is focusing on Hitchcock and a series about film development, and October is Vincent Price and horror movies (of course).

I looked at the Hot Rod poll -- there's obvious bias against black and white movies (are those people all three year olds who need visual stimulation because they can't understand what's going on?), but I wonder how many noticed that the top 4 movies are all more than 40 years old. You had to go down to #24 before finding one made after 1980.

If you need to see Mitchum, One Minute to Zero (1952) (war movie) and The Good Guys and the Bad Guys (1969) (western comedy) are both on August 27th.

LOL, if that tickles your fancy , how about this classic, bought it years ago without ever seeing it, just because of this cover.
