Got a new favorite director: Shunji Iwai
How did I not know of this man's films. This week I got to convert an art house theater to digital and once I got the blu-ray output hooked up a few of the girls had a little overnight marathon of his films they invited me to.
Watched:
Vampire - not your typical vampire movie, actually it's not about vampires at all. It is mostly about depression and suicide and very good. Think this is his first English film
All about Lily Chou-Chou - An incredible coming of age film about the dangers a lot of kids have to deal with growing up as well as the bonds we can make with those we share experiences with.
Love Letter - A beautiful and understated film about the idea of love and loss and accidental friendship. This was an incredibly beautiful film and I was told it may be remade here in the U.S. I really hope the director is going to do the re-make because this is a beautifully delicate film and I could see it done all wrong here.
His style reminds me a bit of one of my favorite Japanese films
Last Life in the Universe which I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys understated films about human nature
Shane Carruth is still my favorite director now but this guys films are incredible and he is in my top 5.
