I'm a hs teacher and deal with 180 different teenage personalities, so I don't get annoyed easily.

There is one phrase used so often. I understand why people use it since it's true, but it seems like an obvious statement.

"Taste is subjective."

Beyond scientific analysis/discussion, it seems everything posted is of our own opinion and therefore subjective.

I'm sure I sound like an ......, but why the need to say taste is subjective? Are we worried someone will take our advice as fact and get mad? I'm really not trying to be an idiot, but I really would like to know the reasoning behind why this phrase is said. As adults, can't we assume that what is said is opinion?

I hope I do not sound condescending. It's from my own ignorance in not knowing and wanting to know.

Ok, I'll try to be a little more serious. I talk to quite a few people throughout the day that do not exhibit a lot of common sense. What to you and me is obvious, that tastes vary and YMMV, unfortunately is not common sense to a lot of people. Seems like I find myself saying quite a bit of stuff that I think is common sense, but say it anyway because I'm not always sure if the person(s) I'm talking to thinks the same way that I do. I hope that makes sense and isn't just rambling. :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

It makes perfect sense. I do often forget that people aren't as awesome as I am. Jk.

What's common sense to me is foreign to my s.o., and what's common sense to him makes no sense to anyone. =)

Seriously though, you're right. I'm sure that many things pass me by that are obvious to others. Thank you Steve.

Just because someone is a newbie doesn't mean they don't have common sense. ;)
Someday I will have your experience and won't ask so many questions.

Steve, you are very helpful to many around here. Your replies are easy to understand and you don't assume the poster knows x, y, or z. You explain things very well. Thanks for what you do!

Nobody wants to share a recipe they enjoy to have someone say it was horrible. I have for example an Anise recipe and obviously not everyone likes Licorice. I had friends who flat out hate Licorice actually say this particular juice was great. And the flavor is not light enough not to notice it. But if I tell most people what's in it they wont even try it. The same goes for some of my peppermint one guy said he hated peppermint then tried some peppermint eggnog and he actually enjoyed it. Most who claim to hate Licorice also have no problem eating Italian sausage made with Anise.

Sometimes we don't even know our own taste buds and purely for physiological reasons we dislike things. I guarantee people have passed up all day vapes due to how they perceived something should taste. Yet they have vaped flavors they hated just because they were preconceived (based on real fruits) to like Peach more then Apple. So yea taste is not only subjective it's down right mind boggling at times. I hate fried Okra but I can eat it raw as if it were a totally different veggie. Took me almost 20 years to find out many cooked foods I dislike are not so bad uncooked.

Thank you, that's very nice of you to say. :)

Edit The common sense reference in my earlier post might be a little harsh. Maybe a better way to have put would have been: Not everyone has the same experience level or thinks the same way. ;)

Taste is, and always has been subjective. Curious as to why this would even be asked.

I like Coke and dislike Pepsi.......You like Pepsi and dont like Coke.
I hate carrot cake.......you like carrot cake.......some tolarate it.
I hated onions as a child......I love onions as an adult.
I hate coconut..always did.......my wife loves coconut ..always did

I loved tobbaco flavored juices when vaping as a new vapor and gaged at fruit flavors.............Now I gag at tobacco flavors and love fruit flavors

Taste is and always will be subjective.

Taste is and always will be subjective.

I always tell people ... I personally don't like my DIY Boston Cream Pie ... however, taste is subjective.

Everyone who has ever tried it, has said ... yup, that shyte tastes like total crap.

I'm starting to think ... the jury is out on my BCP

In no way was I referring to people new to ecf. I'm sorry if it sounded like I was being critical for not knowing something. I would never do that considering I'm still new. I wasn't trying to criticize anything except to find out the origins as to why people say this phrase.

Whether veteran or new, I just thought that from an age early on, we learn that what people say is often opinion.

And yes...Steve is fantastic!!! When I began here (less than a month ago), he helped me immensely, and he's responsible for my favorite diy vape.

I think that's why I question the necessity to state it. If taste is and always has been subjective, then why do we repeat it?

It wasn't harsh and is a fact that some people are lacking in common sense. Others may just need a little help with something new to them. I know I have asked many questions in the past month and to some it may seem like common sense. It's ok, I get it and am not the least put off by it. I appreciate the knowledge of this forum and have learned a LOT! I love learning new things. Thanks to all of you that have helped me along the way!
