LOL - Vaping in the ER

I Vaped while in the ER, being treated for an infected animal bite (blood poisoning is fun!). Nobody so much as lifted an eyebrow except for the x-ray tech, who said "wouldn't get that to close to the beam if I were you" LOL. None of the Nurses were to interested, but the Doctor asked all the standard questions.

I was thinking about writing up something, but there is sooooo much to learn I almost had trouble with someone earlier who was interested. I don't think I'm a good sales person LOL. He just wanted one. Didn't want to read anything, didn't want to learn, wanted to pick it up, puff it and it work. And I was trying to explain it the best I could in the simplest way without confusing the guy. So hard to do for me at least. I wish people wouldn't be as lazy. -sigh- if you happen to put up some info in a pamphlet form that be awesome. I'd start handing out those left and right. Going to try and convert my dad and grandma soon <3

From their website:

Smoking: Good News and Bad News:
The U.S. smoking rate has dropped sharply, from around 40% in the mid-1960s to a little over 20% now. That's the good news. The bad news is that according to the American Lung Association, each day 6,300 American kids try their first cigarette and nearly 2,000 of them will become daily smokers. But it's not just conventional cigarettes and other tobacco products that parents need to watch out for. Gaining traction are electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes), marketed as the "healthier alternative" to regular smoking, with many brands offering free trial kits through online promotions that kids can easily access.

To read more about each issue or to share your feedback about other notable issues in 2010, visit www.sacred-heart.org.

All the Florida vapers should call, write or email to educate these idiots (maybe the social group here can get together to do this).

Of course, Chantix, patches, gum and sprays are A-OK since they have a stop smoking program! Grrrrr Comment on their Facebook page! Top Kids' Health Issues to Watch in 2010 | Facebook

One of the hospitals in my town is starting a new anti tobacco policy,
No smoking, No NRT Gum, and No Vaping on the hospitals properties. Yes they specifically mention vaping !!!

The only type of NRT that will be allowed on the property will be patches and they have to be placed where they are not visible.

How on earth would they know if someone were chewing nic gum?

So, judging by what I'm seeing there, your vital signs were being monitored while you were vaping. Were there any changes in your vital signs? Increase in B/P, Pulse, Respirations, decrease in O2 Sats. That would be considered medical evidence on the effects of vaping.

SO TRUE!! If you aren't among the politically correct, you don't matter.

And the politically correct changes from day to day so if you were right yesterday you won't be today

The most accurate and simple observation of today's society. I love my country, but some of my countryman are just not on my side.

Chalk one up for our side on the short term effects at any rate. No change in B/P, Pulse, Respirations or O2 Saturation while using a PV. The same cannot be said about tobacco cigarettes, you will see changes in B/P and Pulse with those.

What about O2 sat... does that change while smoking cigs or not? Or is that a more delayed change?

While I was in Nursing School some years back we did an experiment. There were about 8 of us in the class who did smoke and our instructors wanted to show us what the effects of smoking did short term as well as all the literature about the long term effects of smoking.

So we took our vital signs and O2 sats before having a cigarette, while we smoked a cigarette and 10 minutes after we completed smoking. There was a marked increase in both B/P and pulse while smoking and a slow decrease after we stopped. There were no noted changes in our respirations or O2 sats that could prove conclusive. For some there was a 1 point decrease in O2 sat while for others there was no change.
