Hope it's ok to chime in. I'm wondering what the different between a coil that doesn't read (I'm pretty sure that means a short) and one that reads way too high.

A coil that doesn't read could be caused by a short circuit (0 resistance) or an open circuit (infinite resistance).

The short circuit is what would destroy a battery if there isn't protection built into your appliance.

Things that could cause an unexpectedly high resistance reading could be a material flaw in the wire material or contamination like a glob of melted metal on the coil or one of the windings of the coil making contact with the head (that's all I can come up with off the top of my head although I am sure there are many possible reasons)

When heating up any coil, the resistance will change. Some metals will have a bigger difference than others, but all will show some difference with the right equipment.
well I have been building for quite some time now just that I always used my mods to see the resistance ( I know I shouldn't ) but I bought a geek vape ohms meter so wasn't sure.

well its changing just not by much

Completely normal... the metal is getting "heat tempered" (simple way of saying it), so it's changing a bit, and will be stiffer also.

Just never heat more than needed, as the hotter you heat it (and the redder/brighter you dry burn it) you'll be oxidizing the metal, which is not good, and that's for all metals.

I just pulse my coils (SS) to burn off any residue or coating the wire might have and only pulse to glow them only to the point of seeing the colour change (in a darker environment aka I turn off the lights) to ensure no hot spots, then I wick and prime it well and pulse it again, if all is good, I can see the boiling liquid on the surface and it'll be across the whole of the coils.

But as far as the resistance goes, it will change a tiny bit (usually between 0.1 to 0.3 difference) once you've pulsed it a bit, then it should be stable from then on.

*such as* copper. All normal conducting metals which current carrying wires are made of display the behavior the OP described which is expressed by the temperature coefficient of the metal.
And human hair could be used as wick but shouldn't be used as a wicking material for vaping.

Stating something that might be misread or misunderstood shouldn't be stated without proper explanation... all we need is a newbie that thinks that you mentioning copper means that it's a metal used with vaping and we end up with a news article about it.

If a coil doesn't read at all, there's a broken contact somewhere.

Too high is you may have a hot spot, something stuck in the coil itself (possibly a clipping when you trimmed the legs) or the wraps are touching in a bad way, as a short would cause your tester and mod to give you the message of "short", which means the coil is touching something that it shouldn't.

I won't be held responsible for people who are triggered by simple words like "copper" and imagine messages that are simply not there.

Feel free to waste your time listing every known substance known to man that should and should not be used in vaping - to stay true to your profound message.

Keep the "newbies" safe.

It depends on what you want to do or use the batteries for but LIION is a very reputable vendor with decent prices. Samsung, LG or Sony is all I buy for my own needs. I am a firm believer in the Tim Taylor school of thought though.
