So today at 5pm is my one week anniversary date and something horrible has happened. I got my sweet taste buds back this morning and now candy and soft drinks taste terribly, cloyingly, sickeningly sweet. Like I'm wearing a Peep ballgag. All I have been able to taste since noon is the rotting corpse dead sweet taste of the Reese's that I choked down. I tried to chase it with a soda but it was like swishing corn syrup and bile around in my mouth. How the heck do non-smokers palate this? More importantly will this get better or am I going to have to start cooking/brewing everything that I consume myself to make certain that I don't go into a diabetic coma? What was your experience like?

About 6 weeks after I stopped smoking and started vaping, I noticed my taste buds coming back. Some soup that I wasn't too fond of suddenly tasted better. Since then, I've lost a lot of my sweet-tooth. I quit using sugar in my coffee, something I was never able to tolerate. I haven't noticed so much improvement in my sense of smell though. But it must be better, since it is such a big part of taste. I probably killed most of my olfactory nerves permanently at some point in my life.

During the first month or so, my taste buds were on a roller coaster. Even within the span of a single day I would go from not tasting anything to stuff tasting strange. And most of the time, vaping had no taste at all. I even posted here half-accusatory to ask who the hell tastes that vapor, surely they must mean vague fragrance, right?

Anyway, I think now this has settled a tad. And I can taste things I never appreciated much, and I hate overly sweet stuff that I used to crave.

+1 for sickeningly sweet.

I don't drink soda, so I wouldn't know, but wine tastes infinitely better :)

I've defineately noticed my taste buds doing wacky things. It's only been a little over 2 weeks, and I lost my taste buds about 3 days in and they haven't returned fully yet. I couldn't taste my vape at all, and eating was hit or miss. I probably over season everything I cook because I don't actually use measuring cups or spoons (my dad and the chefs at the restaurants I used to work at taught me to cook, and none of them actually measured the ingredients when cooking).

If you don't want to give up soda but it's too sweet for you, why don't you try cutting the soda with some plain soda water? (Not tonic, that would probably be disgusting). I've found that I really enjoy wine mixed with soda water or 7up (plus I can drink more with fewer consequences).

My taste buds are still coming back however very slowly. I must say my sense of smell which in the smoking days was next to nothing has REALLY come back strong. Before I used to have to stand right next to my wife to smell her hairspray while she was putting it on. Now I can be downstairs and smell it while she is upstairs. I also am forced to give the dog a bath MUCH MUCH more often..!!!

I noticed a definite change in my sense of taste, as well as, my sense of smell. I haven't had anything unpleasant yet. Of course, I stick with diet beverages. I've never been able to stomach a regular soda. The only problem I have had was sore teeth. That lasted about 1 week. I read that it's due to increased blood flow from cutting out cigarettes. I'm not sure if that's true, but it sounded good to me. Oh! And my feet no longer freeze. *shrug* I'll take it.

Something strange has happened to my tastes in vaping after a little over 3 months tobacco free. I just can't seem to find a tobacco flavor that tastes good anymore. I've definitely developed more of a sweet tooth when it comes to the vaping! :vapor:

And food definitely tastes better. One thing that comes to mind that I haven't heard mentioned yet...

We periodically get batches of freshly made sausage in a neighboring town. Always got the wife to order me the hot stuff. She buys it in bulk and we pack and freeze all but one night's serving. Pulled a pack out of the freezer and tried some last week and could barely get through it! Don't know if the guy making it dumped extra peppers into it or if my tastebuds are all of a sudden more sensitive. We've done business with this guy for years...NEVER had a batch this hot. I'm thinking it's more my tastebuds. Think we just might go mild next order.

My sour taste buds came back first. Normally I love sour so much, i'll happily eat lemon wedges but for about a week anything remotely sour was overpowering and disgusting. Everything else tasted pretty bland. Something balanced out and even though I don't seem to have full range back, I am enjoying pleasantly enhanced flavor in some things. I just learned the other day that Sierra Mist atually has a very nice lemon-lime flavor. It had always tasted almost like nothing to me.
