Edit: Mattiem the shifty-eyed Pommeranian beat me to it, so cool. Bumped this thread, anyway.

She is actually a mixture of wonderful breeds. Top of the list is border collie and golden retriever. She is bigger than she looks in the photo. Her name is Mattie Marie thus the handle mattiem. I found her at a small pet shelter, unfortunately it is one that doesn't keep them forever. When she was found she had 5 babies with her. 3 of them survived. She was so very thin, scared and hungry. I saw her photo on petfinder and fell in love with her. I had to wait until her puppies were weaned before I could bring her home with me. Had to be the longest 3 weeks of my life. That was 5 years ago. As you can see, she is no longer thin, scared and hungry. She is the most amazing little girl I have ever met and I've gotta say I have had wonderful pets before. She definitely takes the cake. She seems to be all of them all rolled into one. I was truly blessed the day I found her.

Journal entry #3 (continued from post #67) Dedicated to "Will" the male Bobcat at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL. And to my friend J,who has rescued 400+ dogs in arkansas in 18 months and found them wonderful homes.

.......because........at the bottom of the tree, ...... stood a FIERCE mamma deer, standing up on her hind legs, flailing her front hooves and scratching at the tree, trying to get at the lil' bobcat who had chased her little fawn into the pond!

Yes, a highly unusual event. Usually it's the other way around. Mama deer darted away quite quickly when she saw us approach, and at that point we knew for sure that this lil' bobcat wasn't well. He obviously had not learned hunting skills yet, or perhaps was recently orphaned, and was still sitting there, scared, and seemingly rather weak, and somewhat dazed looking, in the tree.

We placed calls to our local wildlife rehabber and a neighbor who is a wildlife biologist, and they were able to rescue the lil' bobcat, who, as it turned out, was not well. Word was also put out to all the neighbors in the region to be on the lookout in case there were other youngsters sighted, in case there was more than one orphan, or for the mama bobcat who might still be alive and in her territorial area.

The lil guy was evaluated for toxoplasmosis and apparently had quite a lot of parasites and was dehydrated and had been without food. He was eventually sent on to another big cat sanctuary for further evaluation. There are just so many things that can happen to these babies out in the wild, especially if they lose their habitat or their mom, whether they still be kittens or even a few months later in their lives. This one was probably just learning to hunt with mama, when something happened to her, so he did not learn what he needed to learn in order to survive, and then he became weak from not eating.

..........and they lived happily ever after. :p

Ever since I was small I was fascinated by Big cats, by 2nd grade I was able to name all the well known ones and knew several facts about each one.I collected any things I could that had to do with them,I remember going to bed at night barely able to fit on my bed due to all the stuff lions tiger leopards bobcats,At a young age I learned about rescues, I visited several and was lucky enough to live not for from one. I donated all my allowance to them. So senior year when my Dad handed me plane tickets to Africa and a brand new Nikkion I could not have been happier,I was finally going to see these amazing animals in the wild, This is my journal.....
It was a long flight, I have been nervous about making this trip on my own, But now that I'm here that was quickly replaced excitement, I was the only passenger in the safari vechicle, I hopped in the back seat of the open air safari land cruiser, within minutes I was bouncing around as we headed down the dirt road, It was only a few minutes before I seen my first herd of impalas and was taking pictures before we slowed, Before long we were off again when we topped the next hill A beautiful part of the bush lay out I front of me, I could see zebras running, and the Arcadia trees canopied the area, When we pulled up to camp we were greeted by the resident elephants that choose to gather around the area Shortly after arriving the sun began to set, I was exhaust from my travels So after dinner I settled into my tent for the night, Not long after falling asleep I was awakened by A Huge roar, I could see the shadow of a large male lion on the side of the tent, That's when it hit I was really here, I was too excited to be scared I sat that watching his shadow as he explored the area, before long he wondered off and I was thinking about all the big cats I had read about on BCR and how in a different life any one of them could have been out in the wild free to explore like Jade the leopard I smiled and drifted off to sleep....

I dedicate this journal To my daughter, as a lot of the ideas from this came from her and her experiences and dreams, with these amazing animals

I woke up early, grabbed my camera and headed out of my tent, During breakfast I heard the locals talking about the lion and was glad to hear it wasnt a dream, It didn't take long to figure out he was a regular around here, I learned his name was Joseph, he was 14 years old and even though he was not the oldest he was the strongest and most fearless lion around, I was also told there was another male named Cameron and females they called Nikita and Sasha. After eating we hearded out to explore the area and I was hoping to see this big male that had visited last night. Before long I came to a river and in the distance I could see a male and 2 females, they were beautiful, I watched for a while, from across the river before deciding to move on.after awhile I came upon a Rhino in the mud wallows Such a big animal, after taking some pictures I realized the sun was starting to set and I had better head back, I was almost back to camp when I heard a rustling in a near by tree I looked up and was so amazed to see a leopard resting, he was resting after dragging a small antelope high in the tree to keep it safe from the lions and hyenas, Beautiful animals.I got back to camp and took a shower, And Taking a bucket shower out in the bush does not leave time to relax, but I was clean and stayed up late listening to the locals tell stories around the fire...

I dedicate this to my daughter who is amazing in her love and kindness to all animals.
I would also like to see her quit smoking, And think this could help set her up. Thank you for such a great contest and for helping to spread the world for such a great cause.

I was up even earlier this morning, I wanted to get going as lions tend to hunt very early. I was walking along and heard a loud roar, Did you know a lions roar can been heard by a human up to 8km. Away. I knew that roar it was the same one that had awakened me that first night, I slowly headed in the direction it came from. It seemed like I had walked forever at least a couple hours and I started to think I was going to have no luck,And I let my mind start to wonder as I walked along, and before I knew it I had walked right up on Joseph with all his beauty and grace, I slowly backed away abit and knelt down, my hands were shaking as I brought up my camera, That moment right there Is what I had dreamed of my whole child hood, It was amazing, watching him his huge mane blowing in the wind, He was resting in the shade of a tree, I was sitting watching and he looked right at me, I felt my heart quicken, My palms sweaty then he yawned and looked away, He was so beautiful it took my breath away, At one point I even pinched myself to make sure I was not dreaming.Eventually he slowly stood up stretched, shaked his awesome mane turned around and walked away I watched until he got out of my sight, I felt such a sense of peace and pure happiness, I felt a tear run down my cheek, I was happier in that moment then I can remember at any other point in my life.

This is dedicated to my daughter, who's interest in Big cats inspired me to write this, Most of what I know about these animals she has taught me. It is her who At 21 yrs old still spends huge amounts of time to their cause. I would give this stater pack to her to help her make the switch....

Wow what a wonderful Idea,This is just amazing, Not only for offering such an awesome prize but for bringing such a great cause to so many people's attention, As I stated in my journal entry my daughter has been obsessed with all things big cats since she was very young, I remember sitting at the dinner table and we would go around to each kid and have them tell us something they learned in school that day but no matter how hard we tried when it was her turn we all got a lesson on one cat or another She was only in kindergarten when she told us how far away you can hear a lion roar. I just found it amazing so we looked into it and spent several summers visiting different rescues, my dad actually lives near on in georgia and she spent her tenth and eleventh grade year volunteering there. I was amazed when I seen your contest, such a wonderful your doing..... thank you.

Day 1

(This is a true story, it is partly at least, about Sheba, a female Siberian tiger that the Big Cat Rescue took in when Cougar Preservation Resources, Eugene OR. was going through some difficulties. Sheba died several years ago, but apparently was given a very good life at BCR in the 90s. She does not show up on the BCR list, but had to share this anyway. Hope it fits the criteria:)). She was to be bred to another Siberian perhaps Shere Khan or Alex.

Day 90.

So much has happened since I wandered in to volunteer just 3 months ago. I never thought I'd become as attached as I have. Such a shame this is all going away now. Thankfully, all of the cats are going to good homes, some to San Diego, some to another place here in Oregon. a few to other places. Sheba, the female Siberian Tiger and Cody (cougar) will be going to the Big Cat Rescue in FL.

I'll always remember all of the cats There are 15 Cougars and the one tiger, Sheba. Tawny (cougar) of course, will stay with Dave, who raised her from a babe, and has taken her all over the country for seminars, schools, etc to raise awareness of the big cats.

(I would like to dedicate this story to my mother who died of breast cancer last year. I was living in my car all last year, but found my way to vaping. I have a friend Brian Arlander, who would like to try e-cigs, but I have not been able to afford to buy him a starter kit...and I could use some vape supplies myself:))

Day 2

(DAY 91)
When I first started volunteering at Cougar Preservation Recourses, the cats all just eyed me when I came onto the property, paced up and down, and always kept their distance. But after awhile, they got to know my presence. Even though I never touched them or fed them, they would always welcome me when I came.

They would get up and start pacing me as I strolled by their pens...always purring and rubbing up against the bars...just like really big house cats....Cody was my favorite...big black nose that he had:). Of course, they also purred while they were eating, so for awhile I wondered if they considered me food and were purring in anticipation of me being their evening meal LOL!

But one time a child...about 4 years I think...came in with her parents, and the attitude of the cats was far different. I do believe they considered her as "prey". The pacing was very similar to a house cat near a caged bird/mouse or similar. So I have to believe (or would like to) that the cats somehow were actually welcoming me, much like a house cat would.

But they are not house cats, and they are quite large, and quite wild. A small pony wandered onto the property at one time and the cats went wild! I caught the pony and took him home so the cat's could relax (the pony, BTW, was not bothered in the least).

Day 3

(Day 93)

Another interesting thing I noticed, the cat's really liked their privacy...they weren't always up to being viewed by the public, particularly when eating. One time, I took a tour down to see Sheba. Well, she was up on her perch eating...the tour of 7 people included a few young boys, who were a bit wild themselves.

They never did anything to the cats or cages, they were just loud and obnoxious. Well, Sheba, when I brought them down her way, just looked up from her lunch, and gave me the most mournful look I've ever seen from her! It was almost comical! It was like she was saying, in no uncertain terms, that she would PLEASE like to be alone so she could eat her meal in peace, and would I kindly remove these obnoxious beasts that were disturbing her private time.

I hurried the group away as soon as I could...but I still chuckle about it from time to time.

Sheba, Poor Sheba, came to CPR as a skeleton, purchase as a "cute kitty" for a rich guys daughter. The daughter tired of her after awhile, and Sheba had become too dangerous to keep around anymore (due to improper training, and the fact the she was a wild animal, not a pet). She was about 2 years old when CPR got her. Then that same year she got here, the property was flooded during a big storm...took every body we had to save her from being drowned! Newspaperman and cameras around at the time did little to help, though a few donations came in after the fact.

I hope she has a better time at BCR, there is hopes that she will be bred to Shere Khan or Alex or one of the other Siberians there. It's a long ways away, so I won't be able to visit, but will miss her and the rest so very much!

Day 3

Today was a very strange day from the beginning. This should definitely give you a clue for most of our days have been strange anyway, but compared to those it was really strange. We started this morning out in a wild jungle storm that was very frightening. Our group was scrambling to try and save our footage as well as all the information we had collected so far. We managed it but not without some injuries, one of our crew now has a broken leg but due to our wonderful healer will recover now problem. Now the issue is trying to travel with such a companion in our midst but all of our group is wonderful in helping out till we can get to our next point of extraction so they can be sent back home to recoup. Though this is a very bad start it worked in our favor for if we had not been going so slow we would not of seen our new friend the black leopard. We have named this guy Jumanji for that is the favorite move of the hurt crewman. He was sitting on a log with ferns and vines around it, almost hidden. This cute guy then decided to start doing tricks until we ended up throwing some chunks of meat to him. He snatched up these treats like nothing else. It was a great sight for the down trodden group and lifted our spirits immensely.
We tried to continue on but Jumanji kept following us and doing more tricks till we gave more treats. It started to become a game of who could give the treats and be shown this awesome creature before house animal type tricks. It was almost as if he had been trained to do these things. We were estatic to be able to see this and gladly gave out a lot of our food supply to appease this animal. We all had a great time laughing and carrying on as Jumanji followed us and preformed, just like he knew we needed this comedic relief to make it through the day.
When we made camp for the night Jumanji stayed by and watched over us (though I am of the opinion he was just hoping for more treats...which he did get). In the morning he was gone in the physical but his memory got us through the last day before the pickup and will live on through our film and stories we will continue to tell. I am looking for to our next stop and what it will bring for us.

This Journal entry is dedicated to all those animals out there that have been put into dangerous situations and those who rescue them like the Big Cat Rescue. I also like to dedicate it to my wonderful fiancé who I am greatly hoping will stop smoking and my mother who I have got interested into electronic cigarettes and hopefully will be quitting soon as well!
