Open Source E-cig project

Well folks, we seem to have some stimulating ideas and suggestions - I'd like to suggest that we go ahead and prepare an alternative web site.

I could manage a Yahoo group OK, but have absolutely no idea how to set up a 'proper' web-site.

Maybe we could take advantage of Cucuracho's offer?

I'm not very practical so wouldn't be much use to you but wish you luck, this is a great idea. Did you know that there is a Wiki site for this forum, any member can start articles and edit.

Just as food for thought I was wondering if maybe we could have nicotine pellets that slot into a device that could feed them to a heater or something to melt them and produce vapour. A bit like the way a glue gun with a trigger feeds glue sticks and melts them.

Thanks Kate, but I don't think so - apart from the fact that it seems to be inhabited only by spurious porno merchants at the moment - I think wiki is a little too open, we need to have some sort of content control and moderation......

And, as I said before - my area of expertise with websites is limited only to Yahoo Groups.

You can setup a wiki easily enough. You would set write access as invite only, but global readable. You'll need to buy:

1. domain name (~USD10 / year)
2. web hosting (~USD10 / month)
3. someone to setup the wiki, but presumably you can find someone to do this for free.

I think SmokeyJoe set it up DC as part of setting the forum up. To be honest I don't really know, maybe one of the mods or admins can give more information.

If you don't have anti-spam measures in place, wikis will get vandalized, mostly by porn merchants. If you look at the source code to a wiki, the files often have a huge list of porn-sites to block from being entered into the wiki.

The reason porn and other merchants do this is that the google algorithm calculates the reputation of a website along the lines of:

E(reputation of linking website with link to linked website)

(E is the summation sign.) So they just put a bunch of links to their website on as many other websites as they can using whatever means are available. You also see this on forums and other public writable sites.

Well, like I said, I have some spare web space and I can set up a subdomain at no cost.

I can very easily set up a forum like this place, or a wiki, or a project management application. Or even all 3

I'd recommend a forum to start with, just for everyone to get things organised and figure out exactly what the goals are, and who will be contributing what.

(I think the wiki that Kate pointed out will be good for a different purpose, i.e.. to gather all the knowledge, hints and tips that have accumulated on these forums into a set of easy to read documents. Some precautions may need to be put in place to prevent the porn bots from spamming their stuff all over the place.)

Just a suggestion ... why not set up a private board on the forum in the social groups section and use the forum wiki. Then you have a connection to informed members to keep group membership fresh and a connected wiki where editing privileges can be rationed.

No need to go elsewhere if these facilities will suffice. Keep it local

That would be more useful if the goal of this open source thing were to create technical specifications for production of an e-cigarette.

At this stage though, I'm a little unclear as to what the goals are.

i need to find a plastics sculptor to make a dual mouthpiece slipoverfor the cart setup , i could bodge one up for now , itll keep me busy and yes i have a vapour addiction
if im going to esmoke i like to make sure everyone around me knows it

The wiki that Kate pointed to was empty, that's what they look like when you first set them up. A little tinkering can be done to make them look better.

I'm not sure how much or little you know about wikis in general, so I'll start with the very basics.

A wiki is a collection of pages containing information that can be modified by anybody. This is the concept upon which wikipedia.org is based. In fact, the page that Kate pointed to uses the same software as wikipedia.

The main advantage of a wiki is that you can produce content that can be collaborated on and expanded upon by people, pooling their knowledge an expertise into a central location. Of course the downside to this is that you can also get idiots editing the pages, and vandalising, or replacing content with links to dubious websites. Measures can be put in place to quell the flow of spamsters, but it's almost impossible to prevent spam altogether. So it's recommended to have a moderator keeping an eye on the pages and 'rolling back' any vandalism that occurs (this is a pretty easy thing to do).

So anyways, if you decide a wiki is the way to go, I could set one up, or you could maybe contact the Admin of this forum and ask about using the wiki Kate linked to.
