In '93 I went to Peleliu for what we call a battle study.
Peleliu was the site of a major but little known (to the general public anyway) battle toward the end of WWII. Went into parts of the jungle and caves where no one had been for close to 50 years. Seen all kinds of stuff left behind by both American and Japanese forces - uniforms, gear, weapons, unexploded ordnance and the remains of some Japanese soldiers.
The experience was enjoyable even though it was for educational reasons and makes you really think about those that went before us as well as those currently serving.

"San Juan Puerto Rico" - Been to the Island twice, once in 1973 as a surprise Birthday present from a "boy friend" whose family lived there . . . SO - I got to see a lot more then a normal tourist would that included the "family" farm up in the hills . . .

AND - "Luquillo Beach", where all the locals went . . . Absolutely - Crystal clear aqua blue waters and beautiful white sandy beaches . . . You could actually walk out over 100' feet in waste high water look down and still see the outline of your toenails . . .

"St Croix U.S. Virgin Islands" - Another of those trips where the unexpected can always happen. . . Actually meet friends from NYC that I didn't know were going to be there also (They were there to scuba dive) . . . However, I had to cut the trip sort 3 days because of "Hurricane Luis" coming to hit the island - I finally got out on the last plane of the day . . .

San Diego Zoo.....It used to be a real fun time to go to the zoo.....but now...I don't think they are as necessary......we didn't have a way to see all of the animals like they do today....

With apologies, I will co-op Blue's entry. While I was growing up, my mom was part of the San Diego Pottery Guild and would have to work at the guild's shop in Balboa Park just feet from the zoo (just off the lower left corner of the above map) once a month or so. My friends and I would often go to the zoo... and race from one end to the other (some of the hills in the canyons were tough!). It was always great to get there first thing in the morning while many of the animals were still awake.

Another memory I have of the zoo were the several school field trips we took, during which we were taken "behind-the-scenes" and got to do things that standard park visitors are not allowed to do or have to pay for. One of those things was to visit the feed warehouse, where we got to try Monkey Chow (tasted like a granola bar... sort of). Another one of those things--that they don't do anymore--was riding the giant tortoises.
