2/17 #2 Presidential Scandals

Another scandal that occurred during Grant's presidency was the Whiskey Ring. In 1875, it was revealed that many government employees were pocketing whiskey taxes. Grant called for swift punishment but caused further scandal when he moved to protect his personal secretary who had been implicated in the affair.

Chester A. Arthur was nicknamed "Elegant Arthur" because of his fashion sense.

Ulysses S. Grant Expelled Jews From Their Homes During The Civil War

His issuance of General Order No. 11 on December 17, 1862, which evicted Jews from certain parts of the country based on Grant’s belief that they were running a black market cotton trade between the North and the South. In part, the order read, “The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from this department [various areas, including parts of Kentucky] within 24 hours from the receipt of this order."

While he is better remembered for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson’s first-term vice president, was eventually arrested for an alleged plan to create an independent nation in the center of North America using land from Spain and the Louisiana Purchase.

Burr set up a complex conspiracy. It involved the commanding general of the Army, the British and the Spanish. Allegedly, they would lease out Texas and then conquer surrounding Spanish and Mexican territory in a war he hoped to orchestrate between the United States and Spain. Jefferson was informed of Burr’s plans and had him arrested and charged with treason. Though Burr was acquitted, the scandal effectively ended his already-flagging political career. [Deseret News]

Surprisingly, George Washington was not a very good military strategist. He lost virtually every major battle he commanded. His best accomplishment during the early Revolution was being very good at retreating successfully. He was nearly fired as a General when he lost the city of Philadelphia by being outmaneuvered by British General Howe.

There were also two skeletons in Grover Cleveland's closet that might have been expected to prevent his achieving important public office. During the Civil War he had hired a substitute when drafted into the army. This was perfectly legal but certainly a disadvantage at a time when most successful northern politicians made much of their military achievements in defense of the Union. More serious still, Cleveland was the father of an illegitimate child. He had provided for the support of the child, but in those Victorian times knowledge of his transgression, should it become widely known, seemed sure to cost him heavily at the polls. Yet three years later he was elected president of the United States.

As both mayor and governor, Palin immediately fired lots of highly skilled, experienced staff and replaced them with "her people." What that means in practice is that Alaskan government now has tons of Wasilla residents, high school friends of Palin and members of her church in high positions, in $80,000 -$120,000 a year jobs, despite minimal or no qualifications.

For example, she named Franci Havemeister (a high school friend) as director of Alaska's Department of Agriculture at $95,000. Asked for her qualifications, the former real estate agent said that she loved cows as a kid.

Lies, Fraud and Deception to Promote War in Iraq

Don't buy the Bush spin that the lies about Iraq are only "16 words" -- the administration lied, deceived or committed outright fraud about every single point they used to justify invading Iraq (except to say that Saddam was an evil man.)
