Bill Clinton - Knew About Rwanda—And Did Nothing

The Rwanda genocide was a 100-day killing spree by ethnic Hutus against their Tutsi neighbors. It was a mindless slaughter that killed up to 800,000 people. Corpses littered the streets and children were dismembered and raped. Then-President Clinton reacted to this senseless tragedy—arguably the worst of the 20th century—by burying any evidence of it.

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, the Clinton White House insisted they’d been unaware of the scale of suffering. In 2004, however, classified documents emerged proving that the CIA had informed Clinton, Gore, and 100 top officials that a genocide was underway within 17 days of the first killings. Had they spoken out at the UN or piled pressure on Rwanda, it’s likely that the slaughter could have been stopped before reaching such disturbing proportions. By Clinton’s own estimate, their silence cost upward of 300,000 lives.

Lewinsky Scandal

The Lewinsky scandal was a political sex scandal emerging in 1998, from a sexual relationship between United States President Bill Clinton and a 22-year-old White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.

Perhaps no other scandal in presidential history can equal the Monica Lewinsky affair for pure sensationalism and absurdity. Bill Clinton was implicated in a couple of scandals, the most significant for his presidency was the Monica Lewinsky affair. Lewinsky was a White House staffer with whom Clinton had an intimate relationship. He had previously denied this while giving a deposition in another case which resulted in a vote to impeach him by the House of Representatives in 1998. The Senate did not vote to remove him from office but the event did mar his presidency as he joined Andrew Johnson as only the second president to be impeached.

James Garfield was shot in the back on July 2, 1881 by assassin Charles J. Guiteau. He didn't die until 2 1/2 months later on September 19, 1881. The doctors attempted to remove the bullet using Alexander Graham Bell's new invention, the metal detector. Unfortunately, the device was locating the metal bedsprings beneath him which let the doctors to cut in the wrong place several times. This led to Garfield's death from a punctured kidney and a streptococcal infection, both caused by the doctors attempting to save him.

George H. W. Bush (R) President. during his election campaign, Bush denied any knowledge of the Iran Contra Affair by saying he was "out of the loop." But his own diaries of that time stated "I'm one of the few people that know fully the details ..." He repeatedly refused to disclose this to investigators during the investigation and thus won the election.

Richard Nixon was granted a “full, free and absolute pardon” by his successor as president, Gerald Ford.

Gerald Ford, the unelected PresidentThe pardon became one of the most controversial aspects of the Watergate scandal. There were allegations and suggestions that Nixon had struck a deal with Ford before resigning. Ford denied these allegations and maintained that the pardon was the only way the nation could heal the wounds of Watergate.

In the new president’s own words, he was a “Ford, not a Lincoln”.

The only bachelor president, James Buchanan was rumored to be homosexual, which in the 19th century earned him much derision. He lived for 15 years with William Rufus King, a senator from Alabama whom Andrew Jackson dubbed “Miss Nancy,” and the pair allegedly were lovers. Aaron V. Brown, who served as U.S. postmaster general while Buchanan was president, reportedly referred to King as Buchanan’s “wife.”

Warren G. Harding's presidency was struck by many scandals. The Teapot Dome scandal was the most significant. In this, Albert Fall, Harding's Secretary of the Interior, sold the right to the oil reserves in Teapot Dome, Wyoming and other locations in exchange for personal profit and cattle. He was eventually caught, convicted and sentenced to jail.

Watergate has become synonymous with presidential scandal. In 1972, five men were caught breaking into the Democratic National Headquarters located at the Watergate business complex. As the investigation into this and the break-in at Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office (Ellsberg had published the secret Pentagon Papers) developed, Richard Nixon and his advisors worked to cover-up the crimes. He would have surely been impeached but resigned instead on August 9, 1974.

Warren G. Harding
Harding allegedly had a 15-year affair with Carrie Fulton Phillips, the wife of a friend. As president, he carried on a relationship with Nan Britton, a woman 30 years his junior who reportedly lost her virginity to the future president at age 20. Britton reportedly gave birth to Harding’s illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth Ann. When Harding died unexpectedly in 1923, rumor circulated widely at the time that his wife, Florence, poisoned him. Britton published a book about her relationship with the president in 1927.

Another scandal that occurred during Grant's presidency was the Whiskey Ring. In 1875, it was revealed that many government employees were pocketing whiskey taxes. Grant called for swift punishment but caused further scandal when he moved to protect his personal secretary who had been implicated in the affair.

President Bill Clinton and/or his shadow aide once misplaced the nuclear launch codes which verify the president's identity and allow him to command a nuclear missile launch in a time of crisis. This information is required to be kept on his or his aide's person at all times. Apparently each one assumed the other was holding it. Each month there is an inspection to make sure the codes are current and in possession, but 2 months in a row the inspector was told that Clinton was in a meeting but was assured by the aide that he had the codes. The next time they were checked, neither could produce the code card so Clinton was issued a new one with new codes. The government has protocols in place in case the president is unavailable or unable to use the codes, but that would cause a loss of precious time in a nuclear attack. Since this incident the code card must be produced physically for inspection at each check with no exceptions.

NAFTA was meant to be a shrewd economic move by the US, but after two months, it had created a combined trade deficit of $132 billion with both Canada and Mexico. Prior to NAFTA coming in, the US had been running a trade surplus with Mexico. It also screwed over workers. In 2011, the Economic Policy Institute estimated the agreement had cost America nearly 700,000 jobs.

John Quincy Adams was a great diplomat and highly intelligent...except for 1 thing. He believed that the world was hollow. He approved an expedition to the North Pole, which was believed to be the entrance to the underworld, to prove that fact. It was to be financed by taxpayer dollars. It never happened because he lost his bid for re-election to Andrew Jackson, who believed the world to be flat.
