Yeah, removed the battery. Several times. And left it out for 1 day.

joyetech has a support email address. I mailed the vendor today first. See what he says.

Well good luck! It would be nice if they created a forum or bug track system since they seem to be going towards a more software oriented pv. It certainly could be beneficial for them just as much as the consumers and vendors.

Have you tried a different battery? I hope if this is a bug, it will be corrected in the version update. Did you say you already have an update?

This sucks! I really wanted this to be a good mid level APV to recomened! It would be nice to have something like this to suggest to people looking to upgrade or take the next step.

Well ... the jury is still out so let's not give up just yet. If some of the issues are in the firmware, then it's possible they will be fixed ... thus showing WHY being able to update the firmware on your PV can be a game changer.

I feel your sentiment though. The last thing I want to see is this device plop and virtually nothing comes out of it.

you should hope it is an easy fix and not in the firmware ,,firmware is not something that can easily fixed by the average joe smoe,,

best case scenario is a patch,,but we all know how "patches" end up

The user doesn't modify the firmware themselves, they upload the updated firmware through the usb data port. Supposedly they will be releasing a new firmware version real soon so I guess we'll see how it goes.

I just wish they figured out a way to better communicate with the evic users, so they better understand the bugs and limitations their consumers are having. Like I mentioned before, a forum or bug tracking system. It would make it much simpler on them to find out which problems are global bugs and which are perhaps quality control issues (bad lemon devices).

updated firmware would just be a patch,,the firmware is hard coded into the unit itself on a chip ,,,exactly like cell phones and mp3 players

the OP battery problem might be a evic to puter conflict issue too,,anti-virus ?? OS ?? corrupted OS ??

I have no issues with mine, except sometimes the software doesn't start up when I plug the evic into the usb port... No battery issues with my unit.

A few of us downloaded the software before they were even shipping the device out and the software won't load at all. Interesting that you say it sometimes doesn't load even when you plug it in.

Just curious but what does your system recognize the device as?

Firmware is not hard coded, it can be flashed. Just like the BIOS in your computer. ROMs (Read only memory) are hardcoded but you can always extract a ROM, modify it and re-flash it as well depending on the chip used. (Or in the case of a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, you can only copy the data)

Since the eVic can be flashed, it uses an EPROM chip most likely.

Firmware is nothing more than persistent memory that contains software. It can be rewritten provided you use a chip which is capable of being written to. Firmware does not automatically equate to hard coding by the end user.

That's probably a quicker and better way to explain what I was getting at.

I will be getting mine tomorrow and hope there is a firmware update soon, simple, press a button and everything fixed. had I known I would have waited awhile as I already have 4 major pv's but being a compulsive buyer I just jumped in and fired away. it's only 100.00 so no big deal, saving a whole lot more than that every month. I think it is the future of our toys and love the fact that it can be updated over the web, so simple as along as the vendor gets the updates out in a timely fashion. My cell phones get updated all the time, just a little to slowly. Even my kick had a little problem but the replaced it quickly, had it been updatable via software I could have done it without sending it back. I think we will see some super units in the next few months, can't wit.

The software is supposed to load when you plug in the evic. Not sure what my system is recognizing the evic as since I don't see anything when clicking the computer icon (I'm running windows 7)

Firmware is nothing but program instructions for a device that is stored in memory and set up a device to run. Firmware for devices are regularly updated, including phones and cameras and the like.

I'm not really going to argue this. That's just how it is. I've made my living writing software for a long time now and have updated firmware on tons of devices over the decades, though for some devices there's never an update or need for one. With a device like the evic (or any of my dSLRs for example) I would expect the firmware to be easily updated and occasionally so. If it's not, shame on them. There's no reason for it to be a challenge at all though. Typically on a device like a camera (or assumption an evic) there's storage for the original firmware and that will never be overwritten. However, that is not where the executed firmware resides. There's another storage for that, and that is what is updated when a firmware update occurs. Resetting to factory defaults just loads the original firmware (remember it was never overwritten) back to that spot. It's not rocket science and is pretty standard these days. Also, there's no program code on a chip. I'd expect the evic's firmware to be easily updateable and no different from a software patch because on a device like an evic I would be 99.9999% confident (and this is how dslr's work) the firmware is the only software being run.
