Hi! Gotta say, this site is amazing! Thank you!!

My husband and I have been researching off and on for months here, and around the net trying to find the right first e-cig for him. We found e cig dot com, and love their prices and large number of flavors, but have found some unsavory reveiws for them. He's just about ready to hit the "buy" button anyway because all this new info, and vast number of products is so overwhelming. He doesn't want to try the fill-your-own cartrige type just yet... he wants one that looks, feels and smokes as close to the real thing as possible, with as little hassle as possible. :) Of course we're looking for a great product as cheap as possible too. :) I'm so proud of him for even giving this a shot, I don't want him to get something dissapointing and give up on it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks! :D

I have been on a similar journey...may I suggest you check out the Forum suppliers section and then watch some of the many YouTube video reviews out there. This gives you the opportunity to see the different types and styles and really understand the differences.

When I started my search I knew I wanted a two-piece system to limit the hassel. I also thought I wanted one that resembled a cig in size. I ended up getting one that is 4.6 inches long (way bigger than I originally wanted), but it seemed the best option for a hassel-free experience. This is because the batteries and the cartomizers tend to last longer. My Dad purchased one that looks just like a king size (shorty) smoke and he HATES IT. He has to charge every hour or two and was flying through cartridges and atomizers.

For me, vaping is very different from smoking and is intended to help me transition from being a smoker to a quitter and ultimately I decided that embracing the difference in size between a real cig and a PV was the best way to go.

Hope this helps and good luck to you and your husband!

I am still a firm believer that a 2-piece (KR808D-1) with prefilled cartomizers is the simplest thing to start with. No fuss, just screw on a cartomizer and go, and pretty decent battery life for a small e-cig. When you're done with a cartomizer, set it aside to be refilled or cleaned whenever you're ready for that. Vapor4Life has been good to me - I'd recommend either them or the MaxxFusion from bloogplanet.com. The code SMILIN will get you 10% of at vapor4life.com, and I believe LEAFORD will get you 10% off at bloogplanet.com. Visit their subforums here in the Forum Suppliers section.

Hello and welcome. Researching can be good and overwhelming - often to the point that one never makes a decision. You sound like you have the right idea, though. Typically the first e-cig you pick will probably not be the last. You will also get as many recommendations as posts (to a point :)).

I tend to recommend the manual (Joye) 510 or 510 series mainly because they are very versatile allowing one to try carts, cartos, and direct drip. The standard batts do die quickly but the eGo batts fit the 510 attys so one needn't buy a whole new kit when (or if) you want longer battery life and decide you can deal with a little thicker battery. If you later decide you hate refilling/trashing carts so often, it is also easy to up-grade the system to the mega carts, or switch to an eGo-T system. Most of the parts are compatible, so the system allows incremental adjustments as you learn more about your particular likes and dislikes are with vaping systems. This can especially be helpful if family members go into slightly different directions in their vaping (one decides they love the tank, the other prefers drip, one likes cartos the other... you get the idea).

Wherever and whatever you decide, be sure to check the Coupon lists to see if there are any discounts available. Too, several vendors are running Presidents' Day sales and might have codes listed in the Supplier Forums. Good luck and enjoy!

yea i forgot vapor4life.com.....but if you get a 510 you can go to ikenvape.com <coupon ecf or ecf5> you can get a 808/901 to 510 adapter <in the search box enter "adapter" and you can use the cartomizers from vapor4life. i just buy blank cartomizers from vaporkings... the silver ones are boge i like them best...and then you can refill them about 4 times with e juice yourself. its cheaper than buying prefilled cartomizers. i got some good ejuice from vaporbomb, backwoods brew, mrs ts bakery, and from flavor apprentice... you can get amazing kits from diyflavorshack.com and make your own juice as well. you can watch youtube videos to learn how to refill your cartomizers too. :)

V4L is a vendor that alot of people are happy with. 2 piece units (kr808D-1). I've never tried these but have heard great things about them. I started with a Joye 510 then went to and eGo. Please forget about the "looking like a cig" thing...it never works that way. No matter what kit you start with, you'll find it works but you'll soon want a better kit. Finding the hardware to suit you is the first step, then comes the juice. You may want to look at the classified section on ECF. Alot of people sell their units to upgrade or sell what they overpurchased on.

I would also recomment the eGo 510 or Riva 510. Both can be purchased at liberty-flights.com. Both are excellent units but don't resemble a cig. Battery life is great. Parts are easy to come-by. Empty/blank cartomizers can be purchased and filled by you or hubby.

I bought my first 510 battery from madvapes and a week later i ordered a ego-tank kit from cignot. I have to say i love both. I throw on a lr atty on my 510 battery or passthrough and get great vape and flavor. Then i fill up my ego-t tanks for when i want to go out and about and not have to worry about filling up cartomizers or dripping.

Take a look at the ego-t kits and some youtube reviews.

I completely understand the whole must look like a cigarette thing. That does mean ALOT to some people. Its what they are used to.
When I quit, I went cold turkey, and by day two I was ready to do ANYTHING FOR A SMOKE! I remembered that my wifes and my yoga teacher had convinced my wife to buy a e-cig about a year before. So I tried it, I figured it would be better then smoking, and it was. I'm going on week 4 now, and have bought 3 more "kits" since that first one.
I smoked between 3-5 packs a day when I quit. What I needed was not what someone else needs. That being said, I would love to give y'all some of my experience. As I said my wife had one that she had had for a year. She had actually bought a pretty good one for not knowing anything about them. I was vaping my first VAPE on a "Joye 510" ( Joye is the manufacturer, the model was the 510) it was very satisfying. She had about 20 pre filled cartridges that had been given to her from her friend as well, plus about 15 empty ones, and there was a 15ml bottle of some sort of E-Juice (to this day I have no idea what was in it). One of the batteries was "manual" and one was an automatic. The manual one has a little black button that you press a couple of seconds before you take a drag off of it. The manual you just take a drag, and it figures everything out. (I've since learned that the automatic batteries have a design flaw, a small hole where it meets ith the cartridge with the nicotine juice, so it can tell when you are taking a drag, and it can activate, the down side is, that in a very short amount of time the nicotine juice will leak into the hole, and ruin the battery, and it will die prematurely, these small batteries are not cheap to replace, compared to the cost of the whole package) the biggest problem that I had was the length that the battery would last, and the length the cartridge would last as well. I would at the worst get 15 minutes outnof the battery, at the best 45 minutes. Each battery takes 1-2 hoursnto charge. I LOVED this idea of being able to quit, and not feel like I had lost my best friend, or I wanted to die, or kill everyone I met. (quitting is very hard), so I did no research, except to find out what the model was that I was vaping, and googles it. I then found a model called the Joye 510Mega. This model is just like the Joye 510, except the battery is longer, the attomizer (the heating element that turns the liquid into vapor) was longer, and the cartridge was longer (which meant that it held almost twice the amount of juice as the 510, meaning I could VAPE ALOT longer without having to refill) this model still looks like a cigarette. Maybe a long cigarette like a 100 or something, but it felt perfect, perfect drag, perfect amount of vapor production, good "throat hit" (meaning the vapor actually FEELS like smoke when taking a drag).
So if it is VERY important for him to find one that looks like a cigarette, I would go for the 510Mega, maybe also order something called a PCC (personal charging case) it is a small container that has a battery in it, and if you are out and about and kill a battery, you can get your spake out of your PCC, and place your dead one in there, and HOPEFULLY when you kill that that battery, the other one will be charged by then. Now one word about filling your own cartridges. There are ALOT of seedy companies out there that this is how they make their moneym so they sell this aspect of the whole thing. They want to set someone up on a recurring monthly charge, and mail them NEW cartridges every week/month whatever it is, and they really manage to rip ALOT of people off that way. Themtwo most used ways ov vaping currently are with 1: an atomizer, and a cartridge that slides into the atomizer. And 2: a "cartomizer this method combines the atomizer with the cartomizer, and it is only one sealed piece. There are ALOT of people on this site that prefer the cartomizer method, they say you can fill one up, and use it for "hours", then you unscrew that one, screw on another one that you had prepared before you left for the day and keep on going. You can refill these several times, I think the life span is somewhere around a week before you have to throw them away.
The first method (atomizer/cartridge) I found to be the easiest to use, fill, and maintain (plus I look at them as ALOT less wasteful. The cartridges can be used almost indefinitely, the atomizers all will fail eventually. Most say from 1-3 months. But with these when they feel like they are running out of juice, you slide the cart out, and drop 4-10 drops of nicotine juice in them, then slide them back in. With the cartomizer's, it's not as easy. They are a sealed unit. As I said I tried the cartomizer's several times, and did not find them to my liking, there are I'm sure just as many people on here that feel the same way I do, except in reverse.
All of that said, as I said it is REALLY EASY to fill your own, plusnthen you know what is in there, and it will ALWAYS be a better quality of juice, thus being a better quality of vapor, better feel, it will feel more like a real cigarette. The pre filled carts/cartomizer's are not as satisfying for the craving of smoking (at least to me) as the ones that I filled myself.
I think that should about cover it.
As I said everything I recommended are things that I actually purchased myself (the price for a Joye 510 kit can be as low as $40, and you should pass up anything approaching $70+) the same can be said for the Joye 510Mega.
Now I don't remember if I told you about the battery life on the Mega, for me it was an hour to two at most, and the cartridges for the mega were half an hour to an hour at most for me as well.
In the end, NONE of this worked for me. If I would have stayed there I would have been smoking within a week. But as I said I was a very heavy smoker.
I ended up (after the Joye 510Mega purchase) finding this site, and reading, and studying, and I ended up buying (something identical to) a "Riva 510" that model is actually a clone of a "Joye Ego". These models have a battery that lasts for 8-10 HOURS WITHOUT RECHARGING!! once I saw that and found the price (liberty-flights with a 20% off button top left of page) of $29.99 for a kit (you get TWO OF EVERYTHING) so for fourth dollars less then I paid for the Joye 510Mega I got a kit that I could use with both batteries charged for up to 20 hours without having to recharge?! I jumped all over that, then I found the "tank" system, it "holds" the e-juice in a much more efficient, and less messy way for ALOT longer time as well, well I bought that too, actually I found a kit for that too so I bought two kits at fifty nine each, one for me, and one for the wife, and my wife was able to quit with the Joye-Ego-Tank system. It was easy enough for her to figure out, and for her the charge on the battery is 20+ per battery, and the tank for her is 5+ hours (for me it's half an hour to an hour), the farther I got away from smoking, the more I loved vaping, and the more the thought of smoking made me discusted. But the whole bigger battery/big tank system, that is what really did it for me.
Mind you, these things look nothing like a cigarette, ice heard some people call them their little cigar, I do t know what it looks like, but I do know that if need be I now have 4 batteries for myself that each last for 8+ hours, and one that lasts for 12+ hours, and with all of that I am not afraid of being out somewhere, and all of my batteries dying, or ripening out of juice, and having nothing to VAPE. I keen it's not as if you can walk into ANY store in any town and buy any of this stuff, but I can walk into ANY STORE opin this town and buy as many cigarettes as I want. That's what I was topping for, the ability to not have to worry about running out. When I had the one that really looked like a cigarette, EVERY DAY that I left the house, I ran out of battery, one day it was for 12 hours, I don't know how I managed not to smoke, but I knew that I didn't want that to happen to me again.
I would like to apologize for how long this is. I seem to have a small learning disability, and have a very hard time getting my thoughts out of my brain through my hand, I've had it since birth. If I speak to someone, I can use very few words, and am very descriptive, however if I have to commit that same thought to paper, what may have taken me 5 words in speech, now may take me twenty to fifty, so every post is insane.
Tell your husband good luck, and that he can do it. I didn't think I would be able to, but here I am.

Hi there, as you can see from this thread, lots of people recommend the 510. It's a great beginner model. Congratulaitons to your husband for deciding to make the switch -- I can tell you he will find it the easiest transition off of cigarettes EVER! The thing is, choose a model - go for it - get started!

Great story pneathy. Well worth the read! My story is quite similar. Your writing is FINE. Only suggest break up to paragraphs once and awhile and it will be easier to read! Maybe is't murphy's law -- batteries die at the most inconvenient times. I'm stocking a PVV and car charger for emergencies!

Pneathery, what you need now is a 5V PT and a 2 amp AC adapter. Available at madvapes.

Well, I am currently vaping (as in this second) an ego PT, when I ordered the two ego-T kits from iVape, I kinda felt bad that I already had a clone setup, so I would end up having 4 650MAH batteries, so I figured to level the playing field I would order my wife the passthrough. When we got it, I explained to her what it was, how it worked and all that, and she told me that I would get more use out of it then she ever would. So to tell you the truth, since Wednesday that is the only battery I've really been vaping. (sure I have at the least one of the other Joye batteries with me when we go out, but I have another atty/tank already on it, just in case I get bored with a flavor, and I still Cary my two t-Rex batteries with me too, also each with an atty/cart in them ready to VAPE too. I did order a 5 pack of low resistance cartomizer's when I got my first 650mah batteries, I tried one of them out SEVERAL times, and no matter what I did, or how I did it, I absolutely hated every mo net I spent with them. They were WAY TOO HOT, had NO VAPOR, and by the third drag I was singing the carto's anyway.
I gave them to my yoga teacher on Thursday, all she uses is carto's (well that is till my wife and I showed/explained to her about our tank system, she ordered from iVape that day!) I would LOVE a big battery mod, (like a provari, or the model before that, hell they just LOOK cool) but I've almost spent a grand in less then a month vaping........and I haven't worked since last August :-(
Well, goodnight y'all, and happy vaping!

The cigarette look alike seems like it is a must at first i too got one first. Thing is it takes no time to realize all that matters is the nicotine and the action of smoking. The poor battery performance will just add undue stress. If you get a 510 it will do the trick for sure. Just understand that you may be making another purchase within a month. Battery life is such a huge part of vaping. You will end up with dead batteries while away from home or just worrying about battery levels more than what you are out doing. I only smoked 10 cigs a day smoking and I would easily go through 4-5 batteries in 12 hours. And they would only be satisfying for half the charge. 510s will help get into vaping but you might want to consider something that will have staying power. An XL ego would be a better choice I'd pair it with 2.5ohm clearomizers. An even better Idea would be to go right to a simple 18650battery mod. This will last most people a day or two without worry of batteries. If you smoked more cigs per day than me imagine how many times you would have to switch batteries, how many backups you would need, keeping track of whats charged whats not. Just too much hassle for me. Whatever choice you make good luck.

Short and sweet - get the ego or ego t kit. Ego battery will last you all day. The 510 atty is compatible with anything you could want. The ego t is great because it is so damn easy to use (set it and forget it). Get it from - Cignot, Liberty Flights, FSUSA, or any of the other reputable vendors you can read about on here. Just my opinion, but for me, at first all the talk about mods, ohm, etc was just confusing. The most experienced vapors with the best equipment would probably still agree that the ego is a great starter device. Just my .02
