Would some black spray paint work OK? Was gonna cover up the air hole so I only paint the inside...

Don't you mean the outside gets painted? I am not sure I would want paint inside...
I am not sure any old paint would work. Sterno (Scott) has been working on painting them and has tried a few different ones. He may be able to guide you through his trial and error.
Make sure to use a high temp paint like those designed for grills or car exhaust systems. When painting anything prep is the key. I paint a lot of bare steel for my jeep mods. Make sre to rough up the surface with some sand paper like a 220 grit. Clean all oils off with acetone. On regular parts I use and self-etching primer first. But on high temp items like exhausts I just go straight to high temp paint.
vht wrinkle black worked well for me. left a 200 grit finish on the rm2 prior to painting. it's fairly thick paint so be careful not to cake it on. i baked mine at 200 F for an hour also, but that really softened the insulator in the rm2 so do that at your own risk. just the top cap would be ok though.
