I believe mine is a cross between the Challenger and the Huntsman ... or an eight sided Challenger perhaps.
From what I understand, the Challenger is more leaning to the user carving it further to what he wants it to be. Of course for both, the sanding and finish is left up to the user.
What type of wood, RD?

Mine is a finished product even with checkering on 3 sides... The Challenger is more of a 4 sided one. But... take the Challenger and put diagonal cuts on each corner ( similar to what I think the top of the Huntsman may have ) making it more of an octagon... and you've just about got it.

I'm not good at identifying woods... if I were to guess... I'd say this is Cocobolo since its a dark reddish/brown very similar to my knife's handle.

Just finished looking through some pipes on Amazon that had churchwarden stems on them... most are really long ( which is cool also ) but I think would be out of balance looks wise... I'm now going to look in closer to the 6" length I think. I may just go visit a local pipe shop to see what is available... or I may have to order one with a longer stem and cut it down despite my not wanting to ruin a pipe to do it...
