Hi guys, I've had a Joye 510 USB PT for about 1 week now. I've noticed its not delivering the same kick as it was when it was new. I have a theory why.

The PT routes through a battery. So USB -> Battery -> Switch.

My idea is: Take out the battery and connect a wire from the battery housings positive to negative terminals.

This would basically eliminate the need for a battery, and I am hoping this might even mod the PT to a better voltage.

Since I don't trust this at all, I wouldn't use a USB slot, but connect it to the wall unit. Same thing you use to charge a 510.

Will this work? Or is it just asking for trouble?

USB is not a real reliable power source, that's why there's a battery. It takes up the slack when the power dips. Now if you get one of those wall USB adapters (like they sell for charging USB-powered devices but via the wall instead of computer), then you might get a smoother voltage level, though that's not a guarantee either, unless the wiring at your place is seriously awesome or you have a power conditioner like the ones Furman makes.

A better solution? Just replace the battery! These things can only take maybe 300 charges before they start dropping off and getting unreliable. They're not very expensive, require zero solder, and there's virtually no chance of screwing anything up just by popping a new one in.

It will work-yes. The main thing is to make sure whatever wall wart you use has enough power to vaporize your juice. While I have done it myself, I don't think its a really good idea to just plug directly into your computer usb port either. Some people buy the hubs and use those and it seems to work well too_One of my first projects I ever made was a passthru type unit-I used 510 attys, a small project box, and then cut the plug end off a LG phone charger (output 5V @ 1 amp) and the thing vapes beautifully. If you go with a lower voltage you'd probably wanna have more amp output tho or your vape would suffer. Here's a couple pics-of course you wouldn't have to have an LED on it (just thought it was cool on my first project ever, lol) Also-even tho it's "only" been a week-your atty could be bad as well. I've had 'em last anywhere from 1 hour to 1 month-apparently quality isn't a priority everywhere :laugh:

Sorry it's so big-I wanted to show detail (and how I screwed up )

Thanks for the reply guys. The problem with the battery is that its similar to a standard Joye 510 battery, I know that its nowhere near 3.7v. My main motivation in bypassing is to up the voltage, surely I would get more voltage?

Also I'm alternating between 3-4 cartos, and they all give the same effect, when I first got it I heard a distinct crackling when vaping and the vapor production and TH was great. Now although it crackles, its not as pronounced.

I took out the battery, connected up a piece of copper wire from positive to negative where the battery should go, and plugged it into a wall charger 5v 500mha, its a standard Joye Ego / Joye 510 charger.

Absolutely nothing happened.

Plugged the battery back in, it still works, so didn't break anything.

I was expecting a 5v PT, but absolutely not even 1 slight trace of vapor.

So I guess the housing needs to be removed and you need to rewire it. You can't just bypass the battery like I expected.

The reason the battery is in there is to give a 3.7volt vape and the usb charges that battery. Thats all a 5volt passthrough is. A passthrough without a battery running off the 5volts delivered. Better make sure your ac adapter is rated at 2 amps. I pulled mine apart and used the wire and 510 connector and just got a switch and put it in different housing.

Well 5V @ 1A doesn't make sense with a Joye 510. According to Ohm's law it won't even fire.

1A with a Joye 2.2Ω atty = 2.2V. A Joye e-cig bat provides about 1.5A.
