This is a take-off from the Bedazzler ash cap replacement and I freely admit I stole the basic idea.
I'm working primarily with VX2s and m401s. I have a permanent hate for orange LEDs (if one point of the PV is to distance ourselves from burning tobacco, why in the thousand names of bog do we want anything that looks like an analog??) but I have a few batteries that came with orange because that was what's available.
The VX2/J118 is 8 mm in diameter. At Michael's, in the scrapbooking section, I found the Making Memories Gem Collection in (black and grey) and (white and silver). These boxes of random gems included half-round, 8 mm pearls in white/cream and black, as well as 10 mm shiny things that I really don't care about. (Perhaps I'll find a 12 year old to give them to.)
Remove the ash cap and position the half round pearl flat side up, then center the battery over the pearl. One or two light taps will put the pearl in position. It can be removed with a toothpick, if necessary.
Black pearls do not permit the hated orange LEDs to show (though I do get a vague eclipse effect that's almost cool), but the white ones are translucent -- and the blue LEDs make the pearl glow nicely.
No studs needed, no glue.
M401s need a 6 or 7 mm pearl; I'm going in search of those soon.
Photos aren't great; taken with iSight, not camera.
Next up, the Steampunk mod...
