Quick question guys. Just getting into diy and made a base from 100mg nic. I made 245mls of 25mg strength at 80vg and now want to make that same base at 65vg. How much pg do I need to add and how much nic ? The nic I will be adding is 100mg at 75vg. I know my new base will increase close to 300mls, but a little confused on the amounts. At one point I was thinking of 35mls of pg and close to 4mls nic, but not sure......thanks

Urhmmm. My answer will not be quick I’m afraid.

Lemme see..

-25mg/ml x 245ml = 6,125mg of nic.
-Your base is 80/20 VG/pg and you want to move it to 65/35.
-right now you have ~49ml of PG in the bottle. There needs to be more...

At this point I need to know is the 100mg base PG or VG?

The nic I have to add is 100mg at 75vg.
So the 100mg base is 75/25... wait.. 100mg base is 10% pure nic, so the pg could be as little as 15%. Ok. That caused a minor nosebleed. You don’t make it easy do you....

Ok so the nic is mostly VG and bringing in more nic will increase VG by a known amount and PG by an unknown but small amount. I’m not going to be able to make a very accurate thing here. Also your 80/20 base may not actually be exactly 80/20 in the first place. Best I’m going to be able to do is a base with a range. That good enough?

Assuming you're trying to convert what you have, I can give you a rough answer if it doesn't have to be perfect.

Your 245 ml of 80VG/20PG will be made up of 196 ml VG and 49 ml PG.

With 196 ml of VG already in the mix, you'll need a total of 105.5 ml of PG to get to 65VG/35PG. You already have 49 ml in the mix, so you need to add 56.5 ml.

Now you have 301.5 ml of base, but your nic is too low. You had 245 ml of 25 mg/ml, so there's 6125 mg of nic in 301.5 ml making it 20.3 mg/ml. You need to add 18.9 ml of 100 mg/ml nic to get back up to 25 mg/ml.

Summary:
If you add:
  • 56.5 ml PG
  • 18.9 ml of 100 mg/ml 75VG/25PG
You will get 320.4 ml of 25 mg/ml at 65.6%VG/34.4%PG. I hope that's close enough, because it'll take a lot longer for me to come up with the numbers for a more accurate VG/PG ratio.

Thank you and jandrew below also has the same figures, so that's good enough for me....much appreciated

Yes that would be good enough and interesting if you get close to the answers below....I think the answers below seem correct now that I'm looking at how they did it, so no worries my friend. Thanks for getting it started

I'm more confused than bombastinator. I'm not sure whether you're making a new batch from scratch or trying to change your existing base from 80VG/20PG to 65VG/35PG. Can you tell me:
  • Are you starting fresh or changing the proportions of the existing base?
  • Your nic is 100 mg/ml in 75VG/25PG, correct?
I’m not confused, I think.., I just do this stuff longhand and there are getting to be a bunch of numbers that interact with each other and aren’t conducive to do-it-in-my-head math. At least for me. The non pure base bit threw in an additional complication that made it exponentially more difficult is all.

Yay! Someone stepped in. I’m going to take this opportunity to run away and not even check those numbers.

Sorry I wasnt more clear, but I think your figures are correct,. I am trying to convert what I had, not a new batch. Thanks

I know how you feel. I often mix pre-made juices, DIY that are different VG/PG ratios and nic mg and I also have plain VG and 48 mg nic in PG... I kinda gave up doing the math and just guess. I got 48 mg nic in PG so I can mix around 3 part VG with it and end up around 12 mg nic, but without plain PG also it's impossible to get both ratio and nic strength right. What the heck did I just say... I'm confusing myself. Next time I'm getting 100 mg nic.
