That's why I don't bother locking the doors.
If they're going to smash the windows any way, why bother?
It's not like they're going to steal a 20 year old mini van.

insurance won't pay for anything stolen from an unlocked vehicle, not even if the whole vehicle is stolen. If you leave your vehicle unlocked and they take your radio, steering wheel, seats, and tear up the dash, it will be on you to fix and replace everything.

They can get pretty obnoxious about it my husband's laptop was stolen from our (locked) vehicle and the insurance co went on and on about "no signs of forced entry" even though they were (this was when we were in the "nice" neighborhood too) and it took a few weeks to get them to admit fault.

There were CROWBAR marks!!!! Argh.

It's a 92 GMC Safari.
2 of the doors don't open from outside.
The key only works for locking the steering wheel, because the ignition switch has been bypassed.
The lights, and heater fan are a pair of switches that I put in the dashboard.
It has more than a quarter of a million miles on it.
It's rusty, and it's rattley, but it still runs and drives good.
The only thing that they could steal from inside it would be a few cans of pop, and maybe some loose change.
If they could get it to drive after they manage to get it started, I might miss it until I got something else, but I'd say they earned it

In my town, that would have been stolen instantly. Just sayin'. I have seen vehicles that look COMPLETELY impossible to run at all (think, on blocks) on the road... Usually headed toward Mexico.

I'm starting to believe that Tucson is the "Little Mexico" of the US. I'm not complaining, but it's a very interesting town.... :)

Here in my neighbor hood recently a group of thieves walked down the block and opened all the doors of cars that were unlocked and stole anything left in the vehicles and wasn't bolted down. Locked vehicles went untouched. A neighbor who recorded the offenders on camera left his keys sitting in the console and was lucky they did not take the car. Keyless start is why he forget to take the key with him.

I used to do that... While I was smoking. Eventually I HAD to clean my car (even I couldn't stand it). Oh, it's beat up (left side mostly, that seemed to be the area of my car that I can't see the most until I got used to it) but it would totally get stolen now, I'd think.

However, never thought I would "enjoy" a clean car (that used to be the last bastion of my ADHD, my car, and I liked it) but now I like having things clean. I just make sure to bring my vape(s) with me at all times now, but that's not so hard.

Two other people have had vaping setups stolen. One guy had his lifted from his patio--he left it out next to his grill. The other lady had hers lifted from her car, which was locked. They must have used a Slim Jim on hers.

The police think its a bunch of teenagers because there's also been a rash of high-schoolers getting caught with vape gear on campus.

I wonder if my kidnapped Pico is sitting in an Assistant Principal's office.

At my last home, we had HUGE pots with flowers in them. They were stolen, along with a bench. Like, HARD to lift! The bench was a STONE bench.... I am so glad we had our big dog then.

There IS something to be said for appearing poverty stricken. We now live in the neighborhood down by the wash where everyone used to speculate the thieves came from, and I sometimes wonder about the husband doing such extensive labyrinth and Sidral stone building and if it will attract attention.... :)

Hm... This would be such a great justification for a POUND PUPPY for Christmas. It's the sort of thing that you PRESENT right, not talk about with your spouse first...:lol:

Chaos Christmas Time, perhaps NOT.

Still left in sight of the thief's and if they can't see it they aren't tempted. If you do not tempt them they will not take advantage of the opportunity.
That all depends on the person and how desperate they are though.Where i work, there have been at least 20 cars that had the windows smashed in the last few months. Not sure about all of them, but i know several for sure had nothing visible at all inside,we know it's a bad area so never leave anything where it can be seen. These people go through the entire car, they have even taken 2 liter bottles of pop out of the trunk if they could get that open, but yeah they take the chance on not getting anything, but still risk it.

Fun census fact: Los Angeles, CA has more Mexicans residing there than Mexico City, Mexico does. El Paso, TX and San Antonio, TX aren't far behind.

I have a somewhat offbeat solution to theft - my car is disgusting. It looks like the business end of a garbage truck. Even the lowest of the low would hesitate to sift through the crap in here looking for anything of value.

You should toss a few set mouse traps in there as "extra deterrent". If they start digging and get a "snap" on their finger they will stop digging.

That is a Fun Census Fact.

Seeing that in 2017, Mexico City had a Total Population of around 8.8 Million.

And LA for the same year had a Total Population of around 4 Million.
