My take on this whole thing was someone possibly on the "inside", with one of these companies that process payments was stealing/selling cc numbers. Not sure if it was a breech in my computer security or not. Like I said, computer idiot, that's me.

No, you are probably right about this. It's doubtful it's paypal, and I doubt it's just one supplier. From what I've read, there's a lot of people being affected by this, so chances are it's a payment processor that's got a security issue. It's either that or a virus that's recording payment info.

I frequent another forum where people wheel and deal with some really high dollar custom knives.
There was discussion awhile back about alot of dissatisfaction with PP and were looking at other option, i.e. other pay services. I wonder if that could be an option that merchants could use since PP the monopoly jerks they are won't deal with us.
JMHO, PP is so stupid for for imposing this ban, all the revenue they are passing over, but I guess ebay and all the other "legitimate" merchants make up for that?

haha thnx gtr, i already have all those. I agree on AVG, its trash

AVG is very prevalent, because it used to be a great tool. However the company was sold, and they even started installing spyware with the anti-virus suite. It's crazy.

I have Verizon Fios with the added security suite, I am a computer idiot. I can do alot ON the computer but am clueless about how computers "work". The security suite is supposed to be constantly running and updating that's what I pay extra for. Should I be doing more?

I haven't seen the fios security suite, but it seems similar to what my cable company offers. Honestly, if you are paying a monthly fee ($5.99?) I would cancel it an install the programs I listed in the other post. They are free and work just as well... if not better. Why pay for something you can get for free?

It seems to me that it is either: a virus / key-logger program, a supplier (or an employee) or a payment processing service. In my experience, the first two are far more likely than it being a merchant payment processing service.

I think it would be a good idea for people who are having issues to post a list of any suppliers they made purchases from so it can be compared and see if there is a common link.

Regardless, it is a good idea to use a separate credit card, or re-loadable credit card for internet purchases. That way you can monitor one card for fraud versus having to watch many. Using a debit card is probably not the best idea since it is linked to cash in a checking account.

I've read a bunch of these, and have never commented, but I will now.

I'd like to know what vendors are on the list. I can make my own decisions, but not without accurate information.

I understand the reluctance to mention their names, but at the same time I wonder if telling all the horror stories without full discolsure isn't just creating another way for us to be exploited. Fear is a wonderfull way to controll people, and this subject can generate a bunch of it.

We have started a thread in the supplier review forum for vendors to come and share with customers as to how their stores are set up and how their security is run. This should help us to know who has added security and who we can trust with our orders.
This may help even some of the vendors who may not even know what they may need in the form of security for their sites and might be lacking. This is voluntary so there is no finger pointing or accusing of anyone and should remain ok with the forum to provide.

Edit

I just read on the general discussion board that we shouldn't name any companies w/o going through ecf management first. So I am removing my post. I do not want to harm anyones business.

I have to admit I don't know why we always have to shut up. I do understand people shouldn't throw accusations but without knowing who used which vendors how can it be narrowed down? Just out of curiosity do you have an idea as to where your problem came from? You don't have to give a name but I am just curious if you think you know.

I agree but I also don't want to cause any harm to a supplier. In the month of July I made 3 ecig related online purchases. 2 with the same vendor and 1 with another for diy stuff. I also made 2 purchases via paypal on Ebay. I KNOW it did not come from paypal as my paypal acct is linked with my husbands cc/debit card # and it was MY info that was stolen (my name, my debit card #). Having said that, could it have been stolen from an ATM, grocery store or Walmart purchase? Maybe. But too many of us ecig purchasers are having the same issues at the exact same time? I feel it has to be related.

From what I have read it seems to be related. Some have stated they use their card only for e-cig purchases so that pretty much points to that as well.

I still think members should be able to state who they used. I understand not wanting to hurt a vendor and unless proven otherwise I would give the benefit of doubt and figure the vendor wasn't aware of what was happening. But I would not be very happy if it happened to me when a little disclosure could have prevented it. Something like "maybe you shouldn't use vendor XYZ until this has been figured out"

While I commend ECF admin for taking on the task of investigating this, it is leaving many members open to fraud in the time span it will take.

I do a lot of reading on this site and not a lot of posting. I like to "take things in". I have been very disappointed at the amount of vendors that have posted in the thread I mentioned above. I have also been surprised that more people have not posted that they wanted this info as that would help put the pressure on the vendors to pony up the info. If nothing else it lets the vendors know that we are not going to sit around and keep ordering from them when they may have less than ample security on their sites for credit card processing.
This site seems to me to lean toward the vendors in nature. When someone has complaints you see 15 people jumping in to defend the vendor when they don't even know if the claim is valid or not in a lot of cases. I KNOW for a fact that has kept legitimate complaints against some vendors from coming to light as a lot of folks do not want to deal with the aftermath if they leave feedback that is less than positive.
I had a problem myself and I did not want to put it out in the public due to this. I had others who contacted me behind the scenes when I posted questions about the problem who stated they had experienced the same type of problem. This from a vendor on this site who is supposed to be nothing but exemplary and has gotten nothing but wonderful reviews. I wonder why?????
I would think better of the management of this site if they at least came back to the forum and let us know what they are doing about this. If they have contacted the vendors in question and they are working on a solution then tell us this! Do not leave us with our underwear hanging out the window! I take ID theft and credit card theft very seriously! I know no one wants to start a witch hunt but I believe that the folks on this site for the most part are decent people and would not destroy a business if they knew the vendor had an issue and was working to fix it.
We have had vendors in the past whose sites have been hacked and they got the problem solved and went back to biz as usual and people understood. What is the difference here? Treat us as adults and as consumers who can make rational decisions but give us all the info!!! Don't treat us as children who cannot make a rational decision and need someone to decide what we "need to know".
Sorry but this has gone on and on and its just totally frustrating. More and more people are coming forward and stating that they have had this happen. There has to be a better solution!

Anyone who would like to know the vendors I have purchased from over the last few months PM me and I will be happy to let you know. I will respect the rules of not posting in the open forum. I did contact one of the vendors who told me they were aware of the fraud claims going around and assured me it wasn't threw my purchase with them. But I would not have expected a different answer. For now, I'm going to trust the higher ups in ECF are looking into this???

Ugh, Lulu, I am so sorry you are dealing with this. And THANK YOU so much for the alert. I've checked my account and everything seems to be in order, however this is good to know. I will continue to keep an eye on my account now. What a shame. I hope you are able to get everything straightened out and that this doesn't set you too far back.

This got me too. I have about $500 worth of .... from some sports mall in Wisconsin charged to my credit card (which has never been used online for anything but e-cig purchases) I was nervous and had been watching my online statement like a hawk, so I caught it and had my card shut off the same day it happened, but my bank still hasn't given me my money back.

I don't think I'm going to be buying more e-cig stuff anywhere that won't accept paypal again. Ive got enough DIY flavors to last me a long while, i'll just make my own :(
