Plastic Clearomizers

Hi all! I just purchased an ego ce4 starter kit and am sorely disappointed. The top wick design with the long wicks interested me and I wanted to see how it vapes compared to my Protank II Mini, but I mostly got it for the battery and charger since I got it super cheap on an eBay auction ($10 for a spare battery and charger isn't bad). With 4 long wicks as opposed to the short one in my protank, I thought maybe it would give me a thicker vape... after all, people on here seem to like them so they can't be THAT bad, right? WRONG!

The vapor production was somewhat disappointing but that's not what bothers me. During my first hit, I noticed a strong plastic taste. I took a few more just to make be sure but it didn't get any better. Then I noticed even without using the battery it still tasted OVERWHELMINGLY like plastic.

Has anyone else noticed this? Must be a knock-off... It said ego in the listing so I assumed it was ego brand but I have a hard time believing that so many people are vaping this and giving it good reviews and such. but that's beside the point.

I've always been weary of plastic products when it comes to my health (plastic packaging for microwave meals, plastic cookware, etc.) which is why I originally went with the protank. So my question is this: do you guys have any concerns about plastic clearomizers/tanks? And what is your general experience with them? Have you ever noticed a plastic taste coming from them or any kind of harshness that might point to parts of the tank deteriorating? I have also heard that some of the stronger flavors can crack plastic clearos.... WHAT!?!?! How can people just brush that off as if its nothing? To me that's a HUGE red flag that these things are not safe! But that's just my opinion, I wrote this because I want to hear what you have to say about it.

Any input is helpful and appreciated, please and thank you :)

P.S. Sorry if the comic sans bothers you, I just noticed you could edit the text and I thought it would look good in my favorite font.

Hi, Welcome to ECF.

Good quality plastic tanks are not bad at all. If you are tasting plastic my guess would be that you got a knock off. Did you clean the tank before use? If not, then you could try cleaning it and try again.

There are quite a few good plastic tanks out there, pyrex tanks are a relatively new technology for vaping, plastic used to be the only way to go. EVODs are plastic and MANY folks like them. I have 2 and they are really good as far a flavor goes, if they didn't leak horribly, I would still be using them.

Hi and welcome to the ECF.

The plastic taste you are getting is probably a dry hit. This is assuming you gave the clearomizer a good clean out with hot soapy water and let it dry - something I do for every tank / clearo I buy.

A dry hit is where not enough juice is getting to the coil, so basically what you are vaping is a combination of hot coil and super-heated air. Not pleasant.

The CE4 can be made to perform, you do have to fill it up 3/4 full and you have to do what I call the clearo twirl. This is where you literally twirl it around like a baton wielding drum majorette to make sure the wicks are nicely soaked. You could also be getting poor wicking because you might be using a thicker juice. The CEX type of clearos tend to work and wick better with a thinner juice.

As for using plastic tanks in general, I have no issues with it at all. Think about it, something as benign as water causes rust on iron but we can drink it with no effects. So some ingredients in juices do react with the plastic in the tanks - but I don't believe there is anything inherently dangerous in using either these liquids or these tanks.

Now if you feel better about it, by all means stick to glass tanks. I personally use metal attys and rarely use any plastic now, but I would have no qualms about doing so.

Thanks for the input. I gave it a quick rinse but I'll try washing it out good this time and see if that helps. What techniques do you use to clean them? Do you soak them or scrub them or do you just give it a good thorough rinse with soap? I know it's probably a knock off, figured that out quick. I was just wondering if anyone had similar experieces with any high end plastic tanks. Like sometimes my Protank 2 mini gets pretty warm around the atty if I take more than a few puffs consecutively. Do your clearos ever get hot around the sides? And if so do you notice any difference in taste, TH, etc? Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I know that many types of heat-resistant plastic still give off small amounts of carcinogens when heated up. Again, maybe it's just me being overly conscious. And yes, I do feel better about using glass tanks, if it starts tasting ok I will keep it around as an emergency spare (until I can afford to upgrade, then my protank mini will be my spare)

Shows how much I know lol. I always see stuff like "ego ce4 kit" etc. so I figured they were made by ego... I don't care if the battery is a knock off I just like the idea of having an extra lying around if my batt dies in the middle of a vape sesh. Now what about CE4? Is there a specific company who makes them or is it a style of tank? I try to google these things but all I get is "buy this buy that"

Yup the same thing happened to me. It is a plastic taste not a burned taste. Indeed it was the clearomizer manufacture. I had a batch of 20 I ordered. Almost every one had it to a greater or lesser degree. I tried every type of cleaning, priming, burning with same result. My conclusion it was the wick material. Just tossed them and made note not to buy from that supplier again.

cestyle.jpgthese CE style clearomizers are cloned and re branded all the time. as a general rule of thumb i rinse all of the new atomizer parts with hot water before i use them, but not the coil it self. i had some vision brand CE style clearomizers that smelled like plastic when i opened them so i took out the coil (CE6) and rinsed all the parts in hot water for a while. still tasted like plastic for a while.
i have not had this plastic smell / taste problem with the ones i buy from totally wicked http://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co...nova-series/rcs-v3-clearomizer-2-product.html...

i would suggest using and EVOD tank instead of the CE style tank... http://www.vapedojo.com/products/kanger-evod-starter-kit
thats a really nice price on the kit
but if you just want an EVOD tank they can be found here for $6 http://www.vapedojo.com/products/kanger-evod-bottom-coil-clearomizer

All parts should always be washed before you use them. You can put them in hot water and agitate or put them in a pan of boiling water. it won't hurt them. boil the heads as well.

I don't believe many of these companies treat the product as a food grade device should be. Sizing on the wicks, oil on the wire from the drawing process, and the coils are probably hand made. Machined parts are even worse - I've detected traces of machine coolant and lubricants in devices.

Boil yer atties!

As mentioned, "Ego" is the style, and specifically the larger thread around the 510 thread on the battery. Ego threaded devices like the Evod, T3S and mini Protank actually attach to the battery via this thread. It's a good system.

CE4 devices are technically disposable top coil clearomisers that do not have a replaceable coil head. The CE5 is the same device but with a head that can be replaced to extend the life of the device. Chinese knock-off manufacturers often call their version of the CE5 a CE4 for some unknown reason.

Generally speaking, a top coil device like the CE4 and CE5 are not superior to bottom coil devices, and most of us that started on top coilers moved on as soon as the bottom coil devices like the Protank came along. I don't miss the constant tilt and twirl action that is necessary to keep those long top coil wicks wet.

Biggest way to kick up the vapor production is to back off the plastic drip tip about 1/4 to 1/2 turn, it loosens the crush pressure on the rubber gasket up top allowing the wick to pull better, you can also nip the rubber where the wick sits for better wicking but too much and it will leak ruining the CE4...best thing is to just back the drip tip off a wee bit

Recommendation, get some serviceable CE6's or CE4S's, I happen to REAAAAALY like the new bottom coil CE4 designed clearomizers from FT, both in 1.5 and 3ml

I also got two of these and they do VERY well!

One of these inbound too

I have found the eGo threaded heads don't wear out my 510 connectors for my larger tanks...AND they hold on a bit better than 510 threaded devices that seem to wobble too easily

Just a quick clarification. "eGo" is a style of battery. Joyetech was the original manufacturer. Authentic Joyetech products have their logo. There are lots of generic eGos around. The performance is hit or miss. The operation can vary too. Standard Joyetech eGos are regulated and fire at ≈ 3.2v until the battery needs to be charged. Some generic eGos are regulated (and when they are the voltage tends to be 3.7v), but most of them are unregulated. That means when the battery is fresh off of the charger it fires at 4.2v, but the voltage drops as the battery depletes. I've been told that as the voltage goes down it hovers around 3.7v for awhile before going all the way down, but I don't have one, so I can't test it.

What does this mean to you as a vaper? Not a whole lot. The difference is rather subtle. If anything, you might notice that the vape gets weaker before it blinks to be recharged.

Regarding the CE4, that is also a style. A lot of different manufacturers make CE clearos. gotvapes sells one they call "Stardust," so you may see that name to describe them. There are other CE-numbers as well. Some are a one piece unit, others had replaceable heads and a CE3 is completely different. Go figure.

I use 151 vodka to clean. Certain citrus juices and cinnamon juices are known to crack/cloud plastic toppers. I general purpose glass toppers, but I switch to plastic with safe juices when I'm doing activities that may be more vigorous. I have had a clearomizer cloud from a citrus juice. I threw it away. You shouldn't have plastic issues with most juices with a more neutral pH juice and it's safe to use with these juices.
