Hi everyone, I have only been using the ecig for about 4 days now and love it! The problem is every time I use it all these questions pop into my head. First off what exactly is in the liquid? nicotine, pg, flavouring? Is the flavouring safe, my bottle says tobacco flavour? I have already read up on nicotine and pg. I have a 30 ml bottle that says 24mg? How often should I be filling up my cartridge? Sometimes I fill it twice a day, which makes me think I'm getting more nicotine then I did when I was smoking. I have smoked a pack a day for about 10 years, I am 27. Am I able to buy lets say a 0mg bottle of flavouring (blueberry,) and then mix the 2 to make it a lighter dose? I know nicotine is a poison and can harm a person, so if I puff on my ecig to long, or too much is there a chance this could happen to me? How many mg of nicotine is actually in my cartridge I fill? I do eventually want to switch over to 0mg liquid. I know my body needs the nicotine right now, but a huge part of smoking for me was the routine and social aspect of it, coffee, beer drinking with friends, when your talking on the phone, after you eat, when you get into your car. I am having a pretty tough time with it, it sounds crazy, but sometimes I feel I've lost a friend. Smoking was such a huge part of my life. it got me through sad, happy, exciting, depressing, and angry times. I appreciate anyone's response even to one of the questions... Thanks everyone!

You can vape as much as you want or need to. Your body will let you know just like it did with analogs. You will feel queezy or get a headache or head rush. Short of drinking the liquid you will know way in advance if you have had to much. Also many of us find a whole carto to be the same as around 4 to 6 real cigs. If you are nicing out just vape. Oh and welcome to the ECF. This is a really common question when starting out. No worries.:) Hope this helps

Juice Components
Flavor- usually 10% of juice
PG enhances throat hit/ TH, lung hit and flavor- water like
VG= vapor and can mute flavor- very thick
Nicotine- gives TH, lung hit and our need for nicotine- has the most impact on TH and lung hit.
Standards for juice are 80/ 20 or 70/ 30 PG/ VG. I vape 60/ 40.
No it's nearly impossible to OD on nic by vaping and if you were vaping too much nic you'd have headaches. The 1st 2 weeks we are in withdrawal from alkoids so just vape away and be happy.
Smoking was such a huge part of my life.
Same here. I don't drink, take funny stuff and have only 25% smell and taste and I LOVED smoking. Eventually you will look at analogs as an old friend that really did you no favors.
I also plan on quitting vaping Sept. 2012 BUT if it doesn't happen no big deal as long as I'm not smoking the stinkies. Stareted on 36 mg nic juice and now down to 8 mg. Realize also scientists discovered it takes 6- 12 months to "re wire" the brain in regards to analogs.
Happy Vaping and I truly mean it.

And Welcome to ECF

It is generally thought that this HAS to be better than smoking. That said, there is no good data just yet. After reading through this forum long enough, you will see just how many people swear they are better...feel better vaping. The vg/pg is used in inhalers to carry the active meds, so no real chance of harm there. The nic COULD poison you if you drink it, vape WAY too high a level (50+ mgs...I think) or have prolonged skin contact with high level nic (most places wont sell nic in levels higher than 60mg because of that contact danger). I think there is still some question about the flavors and if they carry a risk. If that worries you, try organic e-liquids (you can Google it).
Most people, at first, DO vape way more than they smoked. I do, but that's because I vape in my house. I didn't smoke in the house. If you feel nauseous, shaky, rapid heart rate...those are signs that maybe you need a lower nic juice.
A lot of places sell 0nic juices. You can mix them with your nic juices to lower their nic content, but not reduce the flavor.
Hope this help alleviate some of your concerns!

As stated above, you don't want to risk getting the nic on you---skin contact; make sure you wash thoroughly (some people wear gloves).

After more than 40 years as a pipe smoker, I can assure you that the benefits far and away outweigh the risks!

Mix your juice to point that it pleases you and then vape away!

The 24mg means 24mg of nicotine per ml of liquid. That's equivalent to approx. 2.4% by volume. The safety of inhaled flavorings is the main unknown of vaping. These are mainly food flavorings, or flavorings made with the same chemicals as food flavorings. People who work in food processing plants have a high exposure to these flavorings and, while they don't inhale the heated vapor to the extent we do, their has been nothing to indicate they're toxic. Other ingredients like alcohol, preservatives, alcohol and flavor enhancers may also be present and they too are commonly used in food items.

How often should I be filling up my cartridge?
You shouldn't be filling it, you should be topping it off to keep it as wet as possible. Never let it get so dry that it tastes burnt. Top it off a the first sign of the vapor getting thin.

Sometimes I fill it twice a day, which makes me think I'm getting more nicotine then I did when I was smoking. I have smoked a pack a day for about 10 years, I am 27.
Even if you get twice, or three times, the nicotine you did when you smoked, you're still far better off. Nicotine is not the enemy. The 400 other toxic chemicals and the tar is the enemy.

You absorb far less nicotine in a hit of vapor than a drag from a cigarette. A cigarette is capable of delivering up to 98% of the nicotine you inhale to the lungs. The typical vaper may absorb from 30-50% of the nicotine in a puff of vapor, depending on technique and how long its held in the mouth and sinus cavities where most of it is absorbed. Vapor is inefficient in delivering nicotine to the lungs. Most is absorbed in the mucous membranes of the mouth and sinuses.

Am I able to buy lets say a 0mg bottle of flavouring (blueberry,) and then mix the 2 to make it a lighter dose?
Not if you mean to use just flavorings to cut the nicotine level. Flavorings are concentrated and you can't use the kind of flavorings you find in the grocery store. If you want to cut the nic level, you can use a bottle of 0mg. pre-mixed juice of the same flavor. It needs to be the same as what you are diluting, except contain a lower concentration of nicotine.

I know nicotine is a poison and can harm a person, so if I puff on my ecig to long, or too much is there a chance this could happen to me? How many mg of nicotine is actually in my cartridge I fill?
No. You won't be poisoned. The worst that will happen is that you get the nauseous feeling you got the first time you smoked a whole cigarette. Multiply the mg/ml of the juice you're using by the capacity of your cartridge to find out how much nicotine it contains. Multiply that number by somewhere between 0.3 and 0.5 to estimate how much nicotine you will get if you finish the cartridge. That's about as close as you can get. In the long run, it doesn't matter. Vape when you need to and don't vape when you don't.

I do eventually want to switch over to 0mg liquid. I know my body needs the nicotine right now, but a huge part of smoking for me was the routine and social aspect of it, coffee, beer drinking with friends, when your talking on the phone, after you eat, when you get into your car. I felt the same way. It was 3 months before I trusted myself enough to visit my regular pub. When I did, I didn't want a cigarette for one second, even after more beers than was prudent.
With friends like cigarettes, who needs enemies? You'll get over it soon enough. Trust me. Don't push your 0 nic schedule too hard. Nicotine is the least harmful component of a cigarette. Up to now, you tolerated all that nastiness just to get nicotine. Now you don't need to. If you vaped 10mls a day of 36mg for the rest of your life, it'll still be a longer life. Anything that a cigarette got you through, an e-cig will get you through in a cleaner, healthier, less stinky and better tasting way.

As for skin contact. If you're handling 24mg-36mg juice, don't freak out if you spill some on you or get it on your hands or in your mouth. It ain't going to kill you or make you sick. Just wipe or wash it off. If it's some huge quantity, then do it fairly quickly. Nicotine takes a little time to absorb through the skin. It ain't plutonium.

If you start dealing with 60mg or, especially, 100mg. for DIY things are a little different and it would be a good idea to wear gloves. Or, at least be prepared to wash it all off very quickly with soap and water.

With the normal concentrations we vape, just don't be sloppy with it and you'll be fine.

First off what exactly is in the liquid?

Flavoring, Polypropylene Glycol and/or Vegetable Glycerin, Nicotine, and in some cases water and/or alcohol (Ethanol) is added as a thinner.

Is the flavouring safe

Probably. All the flavorings used by reputable vendors are FDA approved in food. But there's been little testing done on most of them as far as vaporizing and inhaling them. Some flavorings that are perfectly safe when eaten can potentially be harmful when inhaled. The most "famous" being Diacetyl which gives foods and juices a buttery flavor but can cause a debilitating lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans when inhaled in significant quantities over time. However in the concentrations found in juices that contain it, even that is generally considered to be fairly safe. But there could be other substances in some juices that are dangerous that we don't know about yet. But it's unlikely any of them are worse than tobacco smoke is known to be.

I know nicotine is a poison and can harm a person, so if I puff on my ecig to long, or too much is there a chance this could happen to me?

It can happen and it's not infrequent that it does happen. But it's not easy to do it to dangerous levels. You'll usually get a headache, mild dizziness, or other symptoms long before you get to truly dangerous levels through vaping. If it happens, just stop vaping for a couple hours.
Just be careful of getting juice on your skin as that can leech a larger dose in a shorter amount of time than you'd likely get from vaping.

but a huge part of smoking for me was the routine and social aspect of it, coffee, beer drinking with friends, when your talking on the phone, after you eat, when you get into your car.

You can do all that with an ecig just as easily as you did with a regular cig. Easier in fact as you won't need a lighter or an ashtray! And you won't be stinking up the place or harming those around you when you do it. :)
And it'll likely taste a lot better. Every single person I know (including myself) who has quit cigs and went to vaping has tried a cigarette a few weeks after they quit and none of us can figure out how we could have tolerated the taste of the things.
