Hey all, my name is Erika. From ohio. We have 5 kids, a dog, 2 cats and a turtle. I run a foster program in our county. Just found out today that our almost 11 year old golden is in the final stages of kidney failure. Most likely this is secondary to lymphoma which we have suspected for about 6 months. 2-4 weeks at most to live. We are devistated. I knew this would happen eventually as she has had numerous health problems over the years but i hoped my kids would be a bit older. I am just so so sad today.

I'm so sorry. I also know what you're going through. We lost our Lucy, a 9 yr old Golden to Hemangiosarcoma last year. We also lost our Murphy (Golden) several years ago, at the age of 10, to Histiosarcoma. We still have 6 Goldens in our home.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Give your girl anything she wants right now, and try to enjoy her final days, spending some time doing the things she loves. She knows you love her, you've given her a joyful life...and she'll always be there, watching over you and your family.

Goldens are the #2 breed for contracting cancer. (Boxers are #1) The Golden Retriever Club of America has many research projects going on to fund finding cures for many of the diseases that afflict our beloved Goldens. There are also foundations set up through the GRCA to donate to cancer research (in honor of their Goldens, if they wish).

Although this might be difficult for you to consider right now, there is something you might be willing to do that won't help your girl, but will help future Goldens (and their families). I do know how you're feeling, and don't want to seem inconsiderate of those feelings, but I also know how much this may help others, so that they won't have to go through what your Golden, you, and your family is going through now.

Your Vet could submit this form to the Golden Retriever Club of America. This is for a study for Lymphoma, Hemangiosarcoma and Osteosarcoma in Goldens. It will require that he submit some of her blood to the study. It requires that the Golden has been diagnosed with one of these three horrible cancers.

Here's another file for Vets, that are willing to assist with cancer research in Goldens:

For more information on Golden Retriever Health challenges...along with studies and foundations set up to help cure many diseases that Goldens suffer from, please click the link below:

Hugs going out to you, your family and your sweet Golden girl.

Yes they do. I am struggling right now with trying to determine if she is actually in pain or not and when and if we should put her down. It is a horrible decision to have to make.

If she's eating, drinking, and still has some joy of living, she's not ready yet. You'll know when she's ready. Is the Vet giving her anything? Special diet...anything to make her comfortable?

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

When it's time for your baby to go home, take comfort in knowing that she will be restored to her healthy and happy self again. All of her needs will be fulfilled, and she will be happy with her days filled with love from the angels and other furry friends there until the day comes that you also go home. It will be a joyous reunion for you both, full of tears, smiles and laughter, and never to be apart again.

I understand, I really do. I've felt that pain also, and it's so difficult. Just know that when it's time for her to go home, it won't be difficult for her at all. It will be difficult for you, but not for her. She will just drift off into a deep sleep, and her soul will leave her body and into the arms of an angel waiting to take her home.

God gave us these amazing creatures to share our lives with, to love and take care of, and they give us so much in return. They are truly a blessing and a gift from Him as He created them and He loves them even more then we do. I know, it's hard to imagine that anyone can love your baby more then you, but He does! He's their father too and He will take care of your baby until you get there.

I don't know if you've ever read any near death experiences, people who have died and visited heaven for a short time, met loved ones that passed away, and many have visited with their beloved pets in heaven! They got a chance to see them in heaven and spend a moment with them, so we can be sure that all of our babies are there and just in all their glory, not needing one single thing. Just as wonderful heaven is for us people, it's equally wonderful for the animals too.

Trust Jesus with your baby, and He will take care of her until you get there. :)

Hello Erika;

I'm praying for you! We've been through this as well with our fur baby George, several years ago. The decision is heartwrenching to make. It is so hard to let them go, and difficult to know when its time. I still miss him, but I know he's in a better place. God Bless you and yours Erika, and I'll keep you in my prayers!

I just wanted to mention one other thing to you. When the time comes, call your vet and have him come to the house to do it. She will be more comfortable and happy that way. That's what I did, and it made it easier on my boy. He drifted off to sleep while laying on his own bed in his own home with me by his side petting him and telling him how much I love him. We made the appointment a few days in advance and they gave me some Valium to give him a few hours before the vet came, so he was totally relaxed and content. I'm turning into a mess just thinking about it now, I know how hard this is for you and your family.

I'll be praying for you, your baby, and your family. God can also fix a broken heart, and He will if you lean on Him.

Thank you for posting this poem, and God Bless you!! I hope this comforts you Erika! I truly believe there is a special place in Heaven for our pets. They are God's creation, after all.

It is always hard for us to lose family. For me, my pet is family and I bet you all feel similar.
The nice consolation is to have that happy, healthy wet nose greeting you in the future. Then, with renewed vigor we will all be able to romp with boundless energy. Keep that thought in your hearts. Your pet will always be faithfully waiting for the reunion.
Your family will be in my prayers.

My biggest issue right now is guilt i think. My ex and i divorced on 2007. My choice. And oh what a mistake i made. I got the kids and he got the dogs. Now, that said, currently we live 3 houses apart and i am remarried. I care for them when he is out of town and we are sharing in the expense and decision making regarding Gracie (the dog) as we do our children. I couldn't take the dogs because i had to rent for a while and he has just kept them. He takes great care of them but they are alone all day while he works. When he tells the kids i am coming to get them, the dogs go crazy. I feel bad that i didn't take them back when we bought our home.i feel that they could have had more interaction here since i am home. Not much to do at this point but feel bad.
