May I also suggest taking your friend to a B&M nearby that you've checked out and approve of their treatment of new vapers and patience with the more......ah, mature ones. It would help this new vaper to decide what feels more comfortable and operational in hand. Also, can try out multiple different juices to bring home.

BUT, most of all, they may need something when you're not around and need a nice familiar and welcoming place to go to help them out. :) Won't feel so lost or helpless, but more confident of handling this new fangled thing.

A Very Good Idea choochoogranny.

Hi,
I want to buy an e-cig for an elderly person as a gift. I think this person is a medium (or medium-heavy) smoker.
  • Preferably I need an e-cig that doesn't require too much maintenance, I assume a large tank would help?
  • It's also quite important that maintenance (refill etc) needs to be fairly easy for an elderly person (no tiny screws to work with etc). It's fine if the first time set up isn't as easy.
  • Having adjustable features/parts is not a problem as long as adjustment doesn't need to be done regularly as part of maintenance/refill etc.
  • The e-cig needs to be available to/in the UK.
I have checked a few e-cig comparison sites, but they all look like adverts or paid endorsement instead of genuine independent reviews. Please recommend good review sites if you know any.
It would be nice to know the pros and cons of the recommendations if possible.
I have never smoked or vaped, sorry if my questions don't make sense or are too trivial.
Welcome and glad you joined. Your best chance of success is if the recipient is open to studying and reading about how to vape. The second best chance, is if you can find someone to give lessons. To successfully give up smoking requires a smoker to want to. Save your money if the smoker does not want to quit or is not willing to make an effort to read about vaping.

Thanks all for the replies.

I see that Innokin Endura, Kanger varieties and eGo AOI are the most recommended ones, I will most likely choose a top-fill one from them.

I didn't know e-liquid was also so important. Is 18-24mg Nicotine level suggested by Foggy Road for 10ml of liquid? JCinFLA recommended high VG to PG ratio, what percentage should I get, is 70-80 about right? I'll buy one tobacco flavour and possibly another flavour, is coffee the next closest flavour to a cigarette?

Why are spare coils needed, do they wear off quickly? Do they just stop working after a while? Do I need to buy some spare cottons too? Do hospital cottons work well with e-cigs, or do I need e-cig specific cottons?

There's little point in telling the person about ECF as he understands little English if any. So I have to do the research for him.

I went higher in nic at first and got confidence that I would get nic from it. But, it made me not vape as much per hour. But, I did get confidence. I would get a bottle of 24mg and several bottles of 18mg. Just to see where he is at and let him fall in where he is comfortable as to nic content. For ohms, I would stay between 1.0 and 2.0. There are a lot of directions to go in vaping, but that is a middle ground for a new vaper.

PG or VG?, I tend to about 70% PG. PG carries the flavor better, but, it doesn't create clouds as well as VG. It kind of depends what your/his desire is.

If you are doing factory coils, well they are a bit harder to clean and re-use. Homemade coils, on the other hand, are easier. Coil, and wick, can get "mucked" up with juices and that affects clean burning and flavor. I use rebuildable coils. I pull the messy wick out, light up the coil to burn off any residue and then insert a fresh piece of wick. To burn off any residue from juice, I raise the power about 5-8 watts. Coils do get "gunked" up. Pure cotton is fine, and there are other wick materials. Walmart cotton is fine.

I would do the maintenance/cleaning tasks with him. It is demonstration-style teaching.

Teaching one person at a time is only...one person at a time, but it is one more person that is no longer smoking.

I second grabbing at least 3 flavours at 2 or 3 diff. nic. strengths.

The level of nic. required also depends upon how powerful the device being used is.

Lower nic. overall for the Joytech AIO I'd say because it's sub ohm, better performing, more vapour=more nic.
ie. no 18mg needed if buying the AIO, start at 12mg. Getting a 6mg and even a 3mg is also advisable in this scenario. IMO.
Cheers.

So coils need to be cleaned, but they don't wear/burn out? What are the many spare coils for?

Rule #1 in vaping is have a back-up.
#2 is have a back-up for your back-up.

Coil will degrade over time, vape gets less enjoyable.
Changing a coil will fix this. No spare coil to swap=no enjoy=no vape.

Drop in or replacement coils, like come with the kits mentioned, normally, cannot be cleaned, they need simply to be replaced.

e-Liquids Nicotine levels are measured my Milligrams of Nicotine per One Milliliter of Volume, mg/ml. But we tend to shorten it to just say ___mg.

When someone says that an e-Liquid is 18mg, what they are Actually saying is the e-Liquid has 18mg of Nicotine per 1 Milliliter of Volume. ie: 18mg/ml

The Nicotine Level used depends a lot on the Type of e-Cigarette/Atomize Ohms that is used. I would 1st Chose an e-Cigarette/Atomizer Ohms. Then chose a Nicotine Level to Match it.

e-Liquids that are in the 50%VG ~ 70%VG range would probably be a Good Choice.

Why are spare coils needed, do they wear off quickly? Do they just stop working after a while? Do I need to buy some spare cottons too? Do hospital cottons work well with e-cigs, or do I need e-cig specific cottons?

Most of the type of e-Cigarette Atomizers that have be mentioned here use what we refer to as a "Coil Head". It is a Complete, Pre-Made, assembly that has the Heating Coil and the Cotton Wick all in one. All the User needs to do is Screw one into their Atomizer Base, Prime it with a Few Drops of e-Liquid to make sure the Cotton Wick is Filly Saturated (Very Important), and then screw the Atomizer Base/Coil Head into a Filled Atomizer.

Here is a Short Video showing someone doing it on an eGo AIO...

Coil Heads need to be Replaced Regularly as the Coil Wire/Cotton gets Dirty from use. How Often they need to be replace Depends on How Much e-Liquid a person uses in a given day.

Some people may replace their Coils every 10 Days of so. Where others might be replacing them ever 4 or 5 Days. It just depends of How Much you use your e-Cigarette.

Here is a picture of a 5 Pack of Replacement Coil Heads.

As an "almost" (and I've no doubt that is up for debate) elderly person myself I have to wonder at what age I would no longer care if I quit smoking or not. My only advice is the same as Sofarsogood's and that is don't pressure them at all, just try and help them like it.
Maybe try and find out what their favorite juice/fruit/dessert may be an have a couple of those flavors in your atty, just up wind. :vapor:

I'm thinking of buying Kanger EVOD PRO V2 as it has the biggest tank and highest battery capacity among the recommended top fill e-cigs. Is there anything I should know before I buy it? I can't seem to find the coil heads for this on Kanger site, are EVOD PRO coil heads compatible with this?

EVOD PRO V2 comes with 1 ohm coil head, I assume 18-24mg is still OK?

Does anyone have good UK based online shops to recommend? I found a few sites, but not sure if there're cheaper ones.

Just Me. But I would think that 18 ~ 24mg/ml might be a Tad High for that Set-Up. But hard to say what your Friend might Like/Need.
