To start things off, I had read the reviews on the plume veil v1 by acerig when I bought this, I knew that alot of people were very unsatisfied with their v1s. I bought this product knowing I was most likely going to be getting a poorly machined rda. I have a tobeco plume veil v1 clone and I love it. Upon hearing about the plume veil 1.5, I got excited. I personally don't have the budget to buy the authentic device. All of my devices are clones, some I love, some I have had issues with. When I saw the acerig clone of the 1.5, I was very reluctant to purchase it, but I didn't want to wait for a better clone to hit the market. I ordered it knowing I would most likely need to put some work into getting it working properly.
The package arrived earlier today. I opened it up right away to see what I had actually purchased. I ordered from a site I had previous experience with, and I made sure that it came with the stainless (not gold plated) deck Edit: I see other people mentioning vendors so I guess it's OK... I ordered mine from vividsmoke.com, they have the version without the gold plated deck. My tobeco plume veil had the gold plated deck and I truly love that device, but the gold plating was a con for me due to the overly tight fit of the barrel over the deck and because the gold plating flakes off.
First impressions:
The outside of the device is (IMO) much better looking than the V1. That is part of the reason I couldn't wait for a better clone. All pictures were taken after re-packaging as accurately as I remembered it originally being packaged.
Very happy with the outside of the device. Looks great! Came with lots of extra screws and o rings, possibly one of those little blue screwdrivers (not sure if there was one in there or not, I have so many of them I can't remember where they all came from. Drip tip is good looking... Happy so far.
Under the hood:
I won't be posting any pictures of the bare deck as I have already put a build in it and I am liking it, so I'm leaving it in there. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures until I decided to post this review. So, I pulled off the top. And that is where I found the expected lack of quality. The new well design ls nice. I can see how it will help avoid the plume veil's inherent leaking. However, it appears that acerig's screw hole issues are still very much a problem. The negative posts are fine as far as I am concerned. Screws go in tight (not buttery smooth) but it's better that they are tight rather than loose. I used a screwdriver to run the screw in and out several times, it all good now. Now... Onto the positive post... This is what I found for a positive post, no longer in the device:
The screw holes in the positive post are only barely all the way in the block. The amount of metal remaining between the screw hole's wall and the outside of the block is (I'd say) about the thickness of a few sheets of paper. Completely unacceptable machining on the positive post. Luckily, I already had a plan for such a circumstance. It wasn't a plan I was sure would work, but it was a plan nonetheless.
My positive post fix:
I removed the positive post from the rda by removing the gold plated 510 pin and pulled the post out. I then went and found my trusty tobeco plume veil v1 and I removed the positive post from that. The vape gods must have been on my side today because the tobeco positive post fit perfectly! I reinstalled the gold plated 510 pin and the problem was solved. Granted, this is unacceptable quality, one shouldn't have to scavenge parts off of other devices to get a product that is decent. However, I sort-of knew that there would be issues of an unacceptable nature going into this and still bought it just because I couldn't wait.
Under the hood (continued):
The device, as one expects was pretty heavily covered in machining oil. I spent a good deal of time washing her up. One wash with a rag, a q-tip for those hard to reach areas, and dish soap. This is when I found that the top of the walls between the inner and outer juice wells were rough (there are two "wells" machined down into the deck on each side, one closer to the middle than the other). As I was cleaning with the q-tip the rough spots kept grabbing the cotton and would pull off a small bit. (sorry no pics, as I said, I don't want to take my build out to take a picture). I haven't done anything to remedy this issue as it wasn't a major problem that would keep me from vaping. If it starts grabbing cotton when I re-wick , I will most likely try to smooth the rough spots off with some fine grit sandpaper. After the first wash, I soaked in (dish) soapy water for about 15 minutes. Then I rinsed it with hot water and wiped it down with a paper towel and another q-tip. Then I soaked it in rubbing alcohol for about 15 minutes. Another hot rinse and it felt and smelled like it was clean.
Conclusion:
Once I finally got the device in vapeable condition, I will say I am impressed with the new design. Maybe not impressed with acerig, but feel the new features make this device vape better. I would love to have an authentic, but my finances are too tight to justify a single purchase for that much money. Is is a fantastic design. I feel vapor production is better over the v1 plume veil, and the great flavor is still there as well. Would I recommend this product? Absolutely not. The quality is far to low for me to recommend it. However, if you absolutely can't wait like me, these are the problems I found with mine. If you have a tobeco plume veil sitting around and don't mind switching the positive post back and forth, and if you can deal with the cotton grabbing roughness on the deck, or don't mind smoothing it out, go ahead and grab one, just keep in mind that the one you receive may have issues mine didn't. Otherwise, wait for a better quality clone. I currently have a .3 ohm dual parallel coil build in it with 26 gauge round Kanthal A1. I'm running it on a copper Manhattan clone and it is a fog machine! Despite being a fog machine, flavor is great as well. Hope this helps someone who is debating if they want this product or not.
Edit: more pics showing top cap (single coil notch is there and the notches are the same width as the slit in the barrel) and a pic of me firing it without the top cap.
