Rather like some people are capable of texting while driving, and some people are not? Or, maybe like some people are BETTER drivers when they've had a few drinks?

Or, perhaps some people don't take driving as the deadly serious business it is, even without distractions.

I find it helps me drive better if I blast the music (frequently changing CD's), read a road map, adjust the heat/AC, yell at cars around me, stare at the lady's as I pass, shave &/or apply make-up, pick up the atty that fell on the floor on the passenger side, answer the phone, check the rear view mirror for cops, pet my cat (I take him everywhere), put my arm around my wife, catch up on some knitting, eat my dinner, adjust the rear view mirror, adjust the side view mirrors, sip my coffee, write this response on my mobile device, play with the intermittent setting on my wipers, cat call at the lady I just passed, dodge punches from my wife, and (oh yeah) put the key in the ignition! :D

For some reason it just hasn't come up yet... I do carry three different kinds of PV especially on a night out, so if one gets "the taste" I grab another.
I used to be the guy runnin late for work, passin everyone from every side, shovin down a breakfast sandwhich, smokin a cig, in a stickshift. Now, I know I COULD still handle those things, but I've found it's so much less stressful to just be prepared.

I know I'll be publically flogged for this, but here goes.
The TRUTH....

It's a skill issue. Period.

Some people CAN, some can't.
I know, we're not supposed to SAY that, because it's not "politically correct" but it's true.

The sad truth is, they hand out driver's license to EVERYONE, regardless of skill.

In MY world, you would have to drive through a cone-course, flawlessly, at 60mph while making sandwiches, and singing "American Pie" from memory, or be denied a license.

Since no skill is required, or tested, they have to legislate for the LEAST common denominator. (same reason we "graduate" people who can not read their own H.S. Dipolma.) which is why so many people behind the cash register can not make change for you if the power goes out.

but I digress....

sorry. Living in NJ, driving skill is an "issue" for me.
hands-down, the WORST drivers in the country.
(hence, the highest insurance rates)

Agree on the lack of testing standards on both counts! Well said!

I'd like to add.... while other cars are driving through the same course and must be done in a Wrangler with the doors off so as to get people accustomed to actually looking at what's around them rather than just half-assed glancing at the mirror. ;)
