vaping my new mini today at work I decided to switch from a 306 to a 510 atty. I noticed the 510 turned a little more than usual when screwing it on (its from vapor kings so the logo was a reference). When I went to fire it for a couple seconds I didn't get any vapor but I smelled a little burnt electrical smell, popped it open and that was a little waft of smoke coming off where the battery touches the spring and near the top of the battery post. I don't have my multimeter here at work with me to test it but I immediately pulled the battery out and took off the atomizer.

I was glad the spring didn't collapse but shouldn't it have in that case? Maybe it wasn't shorting for long enough? The firing pin looks ok.

I'd hate to throw away this AW IMR battery, I'll test it for voltage but I'm not sure what else to check to see if its still alright.. not really sure where the smoke was coming from. :(

Thanks dopeh, I'll test the atty with a multimeter when I get home to see if its popped or shorted but I'll probably just toss it out. I'm new so I hadn't run into a failed atty but I would assume normally if the coil gets blown there would no longer be any electrical connection which wouldn't lead to a shorting situation and that kind of puzzles me how this could happen, unless maybe it was screwed on too tight and the rubber piece which separates the positive and negative elements compressed to the point where they made contact. I'm hesitant to try on my silver bullet which is my only other pv.

The battery spring didn't get hot enough to collapse sounds like. No, don't throw the battery away. It should be fine. The 510 atty though should be metered and not used again on your mod. Try putting the 306 back on and see how it goes. :)
Cool, thanks for the info Rhapsodies Fire! I swapped to a fresh battery and the 306 right after the incident and I'm back in vaping bliss.. thankfully no harm was done to my precious. :)

If by chance you melted the button you can push the pin through and turn the button 180 degrees and your back in business.I like that you stopped and investigated that saved you a bunch of hassle well done. Chances are the positive and negative made contact on your atomizer there is very little clearance on most of them. Its a real good idea to pay attention to your mod when you put a new atomizer on
